One for older MNers - Tubular Bells was released 50 years ago this week!

25th May 1973. Makes me feel a million years old! What with that and Dark Side of the Moon having turned 50 earlier this year, Pet Shop Boys' first single released 40 years ago this week - all of which I remember, from soon after if not release dates. Officially old!

The PSB themed evening on BBC2 last night was great. Only seen the first two programmes so far, but fully intend to catch up on the others later this week. If anyone ever pops up on MN to say that either Neil Tennant or Chris Lowe is horrible IRL, I may cry.

Loved that album For some reason my dad bought it as a birthday present for my sister, at a time when we had almost zero records, other than ancient 78s.

We played it again and again and AGAIN.

Tubular Bells is great though mainly for the first ten minutes. It was used for the theme of the Exorcist, which makes some of it creepy; and there’s a bit in the middle that just goes to pieces, like Mike got distracted or was having a low blood sugar moment!

My DM and her friend were his gardeners, they all buggered off one weekend in a helicopter.. leaving me, my younger brother and mums friends 2 kids staying in Mikes house, with Sally Oldfields boyfriend looking after us!

Wouldn't be ok these days, but we had a riot (i was 11) he had 2 huge parrots flying around the house and we ate a lot of chocolate

It was a great time with stunning music - TB being up there with the best.

My brother was also a twin brother look-alike of Mike Oldfield as seen on the Ommadawn album cover.

Yes it was. They played it on the radio while I ws driving on the motorway the other day. The monotony of it makes it really not the right sort of music to drive to.

I loved and still love Dark Side of the Moon. It's such a classic.

Older DB had the album, a gift from a wannabe girlfriend in maybe 1976.
I was allowed to play that and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors if he supervised me putting the needle down!
Mike Oldfield’s reworking of the Blue Peter theme was a bit cringeworthy, wasn’t it?
