What's the worst airport you've ever been to?

Inspired by the dismal destination thread...where is the worst airport?
I think Lisbon is a shocker for such a major city. A warehouse with insufficient seating and barely any cafes.
Also had a horrible experience at Heraklion where it was so badly organised people were crying, fighting and missing flights!

Timisoara in late 80s
I think it was a wooden shed, with armed police

now Manchester airport terminal one is a mess and a national embarassment

Wishing4sunshine · 20/05/2023 15:57

Sharm el Sheikh. Toilets were absolutely horrendous, really awful.

AgrathaChristie · 20/05/2023 15:58

Luton. Seemed like they couldn’t pay the electricity bill so only had 1/3 of lights on.
Banjul for security breaches. And in the older days of yore before chip and pin my card was cloned there. £4000 gone from bank account but bank reimbursed.

Dabolim in Goa

TheApplianceofScience · 20/05/2023 16:02

British Airways queue in Malaga.

Economy queue and Club queue didn't matter people were standing where they jolly well liked, happens every year.

The lounge redeems it slightly, nice and bright and airy.

JulieHoney · 20/05/2023 16:02

Leeds Bradford.

LadyLolaRuben · 20/05/2023 16:02

Dalaman Turkey. Awful

DemonicCaveMaggot · 20/05/2023 16:05

Mwinilunga in Zambia. An earth landing strip that the plane had to fly over to ensure there weren't any potholes or flooding, and a brick shack with broken windows. And no toilet. I was grateful for the flight although the first 150 miles was at low altitude so it was like going for a ride in an off balance washing machine.

Terminal A at Dallas Fort Worth is like one of Dante's circles of Hell. Mostly because of the people, me included.

Kos. Worst airport I've ever come back from and the worst in Greece ( and I've seen a lot of them. Samos was best.)

GloomySkies · 20/05/2023 16:07

Miami International was surprisingly shitty. Really difficult to get to on awful spiralling roads, horrendous queues, obnoxious security, and no facilities whatsoever in Departures.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 20/05/2023 16:10

Venice treviso in about 2002.
The security guy kept trying to get me to take my trousers off because they had set the sensitivity of the metal detector so high that trouser zips set them off.
But more disconcertingly, when I refused firmly, they just waved me through.

Stardustkid · 20/05/2023 16:11

Izmir Turkey 3 lounges had mega delays they kept moving us until we realised there’s only one door. Refused to move after that

I was coming on here to say Kos. Our flight home was delayed by 2 hours too so there were about 6 flights worth of people crammed in that tiny room.

WeightInLine · 20/05/2023 16:12

Southampton is the worst in the UK. Staffed by the most sour-faced staff anywhere.

Foxesandsquirrels · 20/05/2023 16:12

Sharm el sheikh. Felt like I was entering a war zone. Both outside and inside.

FrownedUpon · 20/05/2023 16:12

Naples was bad. Total chaos.

Lollygaggle · 20/05/2023 16:16

Karachi, hot, humid , threatening men and women separated to go through security and lots of stories of luggage stolen . Really, really unpleasant atmosphere .

This. Tiny, overcrowded, stifling and announcements in Greek only. So stressful

foreverbasil · 20/05/2023 16:23

Agree about Manchester, it's very disorganised especially in arrivals. Usually piled high with lost luggage.
Would people be willing to say why? Just the name of the airport doesn't mean much

I can understand why some small and remote airports are bad but surely Miami, Dallas and Venice should have their shit together

OP posts:
BestIsWest · 20/05/2023 16:26

Worst 3:
Sanford in Florida
Newark
Charles de Gaulle (may be coloured by the flight being delayed and there being nowhere to sit apart from outside a shop that sold the smelliest cheese known to man)

dudsville · 20/05/2023 16:27

Russia, i can't remember if it was St Petersborg or Moscow. It was tiny, so you couldn't really stretch your legs, guards everywhere with machine guns, i think food options were extremely limited. This about 20 years ago to be fair. I loved visiting the country, people, food, architecture, the white nights, arts, so much, but not the airport.

It really isn't if you've flown into some small airports abroad! And it wasn't my experience a month ago.

Faro some years ago - only a couple of toilets and inadequate seating.

Heraklion last year - one small, extremely expensive Duty Free shop, one cafe once you're through security. Everyone held in a small area waiting for flights to be called. Many were standing.

It’s positively spacious there compared to Kefelonia (don’t let that out you off, it’s a truly beautiful island - my favourite).

Tunis was awful and depressing.

Newark is a cesspit. if you’re visiting New York, I don’t care how much more it is to fly into either JFK or LGA, but it is worth it.
