What's the worst airport you've ever been to?

Inspired by the dismal destination thread...where is the worst airport?
I think Lisbon is a shocker for such a major city. A warehouse with insufficient seating and barely any cafes.
Also had a horrible experience at Heraklion where it was so badly organised people were crying, fighting and missing flights!

I’d say only problem with Manchester airport is that I struggle to see where an Uber can pick you up
The pick up point at Manchester is absolutely nuts - as with the signage at CDG, the designer is the only person who knows how it's supposed to work! And the security staff seem to have been recruited from a US superprison.

Booked a holiday for next year flying from Manchester which I am starting to regret

GettingStuffed · 21/05/2023 08:38

Heraklion, we had to queue outside in the Greek summer with no shade.
Also Chania , The first time. It's on a military airport and was just a shed with passport control. Baggage was collected from the trolley they use to bring it from the plane

Helsinki for departures (although the arrivals side is Ok). Remember being funnelled through an increasingly narrower set of spaces until we were coralled into a tiny departure gate which only had seats for about 20 people. Odd because building design elsewhere in Helsinki was fantastic.

Aberdeen airport seems to have been designed in a similar way. Departure 'gate' was essentially a corridor.

@TravellingSpoon Manchester is our local airport. We always fly from there. Never had any issues. I'm surprised by some of these comments. It's busy but we've always found it decent.

Southampton is the worst in the UK. Staffed by the most sour-faced staff anywhere.

DH was there this week and they were total dicks apparently!

Flew from Leeds Bradford once, it was total fucking chaos. There wasn’t even anything unusual going on so assumed it was like that everyday.

The one in Milan was so basic this was 20 years ago so hopefully been updated!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/05/2023 09:44

Was it the main Milan airport @sleepismyhobby as there are also very small airports at Bergamo and Brescia which are counted as Milan for budget airlines - useful if travelling to Lake Garda as they are closer !

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/05/2023 09:47

Some of these responses make me wonder how often people travel when they are picking out things like self labelling of cases and not having their flights called over the tannoy as negatives for a particular airport.

Ketzele · 21/05/2023 10:04

I've been in some really basic places in Eastern Europe and Africa, but my vote goes to Miami International. Absolute shit hole, and no excuse.

JadeSeahorse · 21/05/2023 10:17

I have been fortunate enough - primarily via my former career in the travel industry - to travel to many, many airports throughout the world and so far Paris CDG wins this contest by a country mile.

Once had an 8 hour delay there! To say it was torturous is an understatement. It was like being left in a bloody great airport hangar. ☹️

I live in Manchester and fly in and out of T3 couple of times a year to visit my mum. Never had any problems anything really worth even mentioning. Even the stuff at Fast Track is always nice and helpful.

sleepismyhobby · 21/05/2023 14:04

shinnyapple it was the main one can't remember the name of it but as I say it was ages ago may of been mxp?

frozendaisy · 21/05/2023 14:25

Delhi by a considerable margin.
But this was a while ago.

Lykia · 21/05/2023 14:44

Heraklion - there's nothing there.

Tenerife South is pretty dull too

Antalyai, Turkey - absolute chaos coming home. Makes me never want to return to the area. It really was a shambles.

Magnoliainbloom · 21/05/2023 14:46

JFK and Newark are absolute shit holes with the most brutal security staff.

Lykia · 21/05/2023 14:46

And Stansted - sensory overload especially at 6am with all those bright lights and making you walk in a certain direction. It's like Ikea on steroids.

Roystonv · 21/05/2023 15:08

Schipol too, walked in, did our own check in, straight after was the queue for security so as soon as you walked 1 foot you joined the queue. Two desks open for about 400 people. When through we ran to the gate to be told off for arriving late. For a modern, western, international airport appalling. Manchester miserable experience every time, feel like a criminal the way staff treat you.

AmandaHoldensLips · 21/05/2023 15:59

Manchester for the RUDEST staff. Downright nasty.

SleepingisanArt · 21/05/2023 16:10

JFK. Filthy (especially the toilets), rude staff, aggressive armed police, hot, overpriced food and drinks even for an airport, chaotic check-in when leaving to come back to the UK. Have vowed never to set foot there again!
