Mauritius. Rubbish everywhere!

rockingbird · 22/05/2023 18:51

Dubai. By far the most seediest place I've ever visited and completely false. People taking selfies outside Gucci / Pravda shops .. shopping malls full of people but the actual shops are empty. Wednesday nights ladies drink free in the bars and out come the fat bald ex pats (including my ex H) to leer over the young ladies. Calling cards strewn across the pavements - I had to stop my children from picking them up!! Never again would I bother to visit such an awful place.

Gee it's almost like it's sometimes hard to tell what the tone of a post is because it's written instead of spoken. I guess we can't all be as smart as you. Get over yourself.

Wow @Scalottia no mistaking the tone of your very rude response...I seem to have rattled your cage unintentionally, so sorry

I prefer the much more considered and politer response of @Miriam101 who I was actually replying to. It was a genuine question I was asking by the way

Lanzarote - awful weather, rained 6 days out of the 7 I was there and was really cold. I had to buy a fleece and some trousers whilst I was there to cope with the weather (in May).
Very windy as well so outdoor activities limited.
Never again 😥

I went to Lanzarote in March. Swam and did archery. We visited the all Cesar Manrique architecture stuff and the Volcanoes , very beautiful island

It was lovely, not a fleece in sight.

London

Naples.. total dump and you're lucky of you don't get run over by a moped

I thought Venice was OK but not as magical as people make it seem, and my pizza was horrible 😆

Dubai but im not a huge fan of cities anyway

miniegg3 · 22/05/2023 20:07

Twinsforthewin · 20/05/2023 16:37

Marrakech. OMG let me walk along a road without hassling me!!!! No I don't want to buy a carpet! (Loved Damascus and Moroccan coast FWIW)

🤣🤣 marrakesh I actually enjoyed! The locals were way too forceful though, I was hassled to buy a sheep's head 🤦‍♀️ why on earth would I need that.. went to agadir though and it was dirty and awful, couldn't see my legs when standing in the sea

ohfourfoxache · 22/05/2023 20:09

@SeenYourArse fair point, I should have been specific

So I can narrow it down to Miami. I’ve not “done” Orlando but I really don’t have any particular wish to!

LeverageLevel · 22/05/2023 20:10

Some interesting posts but why do some posters use such ugly language - dismissing a historic and interesting city as a “dump”. Doesn’t tell you anything rlly - and just such base and vitriolic language says more about the poster.

Heckythump1 · 22/05/2023 20:14

We were really disappointed with Lisbon when we stopped there on a cruise... just a grubby dump really and not much to see.
We were really unexpectedly impressed with Malaga though and would go back!

A city can be both culturally significant and a total shit hole at the same time

I loved NYC. Went for 4 days and had an amazing (but extremely tiring) time

I'm always planning my next trip! It's got such an atmosphere. I get why some people don't like it but it is a city at the end of the day, it's got buildings and it's busy! We had an amazing time too

LeverageLevel · 22/05/2023 20:45

@Namechange - more of the same. Anyway, the posters never refer to anything positive, it’s just crassness dressed up as judgment.

Mxflamingnoravera · 22/05/2023 21:03

Dubrovnik. A walled city of ice cream parlours, tourist tat and crap restaurants.

CathyorClaire · 22/05/2023 21:19

Tobermory, boring, unfriendly, totally lifeless

I got dragged round Tobermory several times as a child.

All I remember is roll upon roll of gobsmackingly expensive Tartans and tweeds for sale. It clearly hasn't improved 😃

Is it? These aren't cheap trips people are talking about

Lollygaggle · 22/05/2023 21:24

Myself and partner loved Naples, it reminded us of travelling in Europe in the 70s, a bit dirty, smelly , seedy , a slight air of danger but something interesting to see on every corner ie very different from home. We warned our teenager about pick pockets /mopeds .... they thought we were mad old people until someone tried to pick their pocket on the bus.

They hated it for exactly the same reasons we loved it and for them Naples is the yardstick against which they measure how bad a city is. For me visiting it evoked the nostalgia of getting off the ferry in France and being overwhelmed by the smell of gitanes , pissoirs , garlic and drains that told you you werent home anymore and adventure awaited.

RedToothBrush · 22/05/2023 21:28

People seem to want picture perfect not an experience / adventure.

They want the glossy brochure not a real lived experience.

I don't think it's the places people go all the time. It often the attitude they go with that matters too.

Bitteralmond · 22/05/2023 21:37

The Needles - Isle of Wight. Just hideous, can't believe we queued in a traffic jam to get there. Horrible tacky theme park. Our fault for not doing our research properly.

Mont St Michel too. Glad we went because I don't have to wonder anymore, not actually unpleasant but not really magical. Too crowded and commercialised. Prettier from a distance.

Sad to see Turkey mentioned several times. I used to live there and thought it would be hard to dislike it as a holiday destination. I don't like Marmaris though, very down market and depressing. It's a long time since I've been to the south, but there are some beautiful places.

Unlike most posters here, have had a good holiday in Tunisia, but went as a couple (husband is muslim) and I speak French. Travelled independently, did Tunis and Djerba Island. Djerba is nothing special but we stayed in a lovely French run guest house. No one on the island was at all threatening or pushy. I can imagine going to package holiday resorts with DCs would be a different experience.

Look, I've ended up sleeping on a bench in Rome, I've run into a gunfight in Split, I've got lost in Sousse, I've travelled on a local bus to Mostar, and got adopted by Espanyol fans in Barcelona. I'm not averse to adventure.

I can't see the point to in being snobby about people NOT wanting to do slum it when on holiday. It's not a bad thing to like pretty views, good food and getting away from the grind.

That’s how I felt about Northern Ireland’s “Giant Causeway” - totally unnecessary commercialisation with OTT “visitor centre”, over-subscribed parking etc.

Such a shame isn't it ?.hate when beautiful places are vandalised in the name of tourism

I disagree. Most people want to see something different and authentic.

Unfortunately what you get now is a very similar offer wherever you end up. Commercialised and overcrowded even compared to ten years ago. Venice is hardly a real lived experience. Does anyone actually live in Venice except for people reliant on the tourist trade?

Honestly this was my view.
A physically beautiful place but like a film set.
I liked other places in the area.

LeverageLevel · 22/05/2023 23:12

@Namechange9625 whats money or the cost of the trip got to do with it? You can be crass and arrogant with money. Sometimes the two fit together very well!
