Things I probably won't do

When I was young, I sort of assumed that I'd do everything! I would travel the world and experience life. And I've recently realised that at this point I probably won't ever go to South America, or own cast iron cookware.

What are you probably not going to get around to doing?

Being rich. According to a ridiculous article I read as a teen, you just had to decide it, and voila! Bit of a shame it was all lies.

Live in Manhattan and have swishy hair. I regret the swishy hair bit.

TravellingSpoon · 20/05/2023 08:29

Live in another country. I always thought that I would do that but it won't happen.

Retire early.

mdh2020 · 20/05/2023 08:32

Definitely having more money and working abroad. I planned to qualify as a teacher then work abroad teaching kids on army bases. Don’t know where I got the idea from. Think I would also have liked to live on a kibbutz.

I think I still might live in a city. Not Manhatten though.

Oooh yeah, a kibbutz! I thought I'd probably do that too.

Hmmm. I do recommend the cast iron cookware which you could buy at Sainsburys!
I guess I'm not going to have big house parties at a villa in Spain, swanning around in a kaftan on balmy nights while topping up drinks and serving delicious food.
I'm not going to have a second wedding (I'm a widow) under a canopy in the garden.
I'm not going to own a bijou house in a secret little street in Chelsea.
All of these Ive fantasised about. I actually do own a house in Spain (with my sisters). But being hostess with the mostest just isn't my personality.

yoga4meinthemorning · 20/05/2023 09:15

I expected to have travelled the world- maybe not S America or Africa but US/Canada/OZ/SE Asia.

And a Caribbean cruise.

I thought I'd have a sports car but they are too low so I would t get one now even if I won the lottery.

I assumed I'd get married.

I assumed I'd be in a senior post in a professional career.

IHeartGeneHunt · 20/05/2023 09:21

Own a house, have a fancy high paying job, own a horse, have three children with an amazingly handsome man who is also a surgeon or a human rights lawyer.
I wanted to be a famous archaeologist too- I've got a degree in Archaeology but now I'm a cleaner because life is like that. Mine is, anyway!

NoraLuka · 20/05/2023 09:21

I was about to write a list of things but actually, you don’t know what the future holds. 10 years ago I would never have imagined my life as it is now yet here I am.

Here’s my list anyway!
Sail around the world - for some reason I thought I’d do this but it’s actually terrifying
Go into space
Learn to skateboard

Be an adult capable of controlling their own thoughts, actions and reactions 😒

BinsinBonson · 20/05/2023 09:27

I’ve been to a lot of places, but when I hit my mid-30s it struck me that even if I had all the money in the world I don’t have enough time to go to as many as I’d like - or to go back to the places I loved. There are only so many holidays in a lifetime. That was a sobering thought.

Having a great career. I’m doing ok and am grateful, but nothing to shout about. Too late to massively change that now.

Having kids. Didn’t really want them so not a problem, but it’s strange to think after so many years of it being something I could change my mind about that the decision is made now.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 20/05/2023 09:31

Be a Headteacher. I always wanted it. But I have 2 kids now and i don't want to do the hours

jay55 · 20/05/2023 10:35

Get married.

Every now and again I see people doing things and think "maybe I'll do that at forty" but I'm already 50 and have not got my life together at all. I AM getting a new kitchen next month which I am so happy about. I've always cooked in grotty, old kitchens. I have also belatedly realised I don't have enough money for half the stuff I'd like to do. I thought I'd have savings and a pension by now. I don't.

WhereMyRosemaryGoes · 20/05/2023 11:26

Yeah, it's money really. My mil is loaded and in her 70s and she does all sorts of cool stuff - art retreats in Italy and collaborative writing projects with famous people.

Be an 18-30s club rep!

AdoraBell · 20/05/2023 11:35

Other way round for me. I grew up thinking I would do nothing, never travel, not move out of a high rise flat on an estate in central London, never work anywhere other than a factory or shop. Never get married- no point- never have children.

Once I moved out - at 16- I saw possibilities.

AdoraBell · 20/05/2023 11:37

Sorry, moved away from abusive parents at 16, lived in high rise flat for 5 years after that.

NillyNoMates · 20/05/2023 11:38

I’ll probably never get married. I’m so sad that I never got that day and nobody ever loved me enough.

tailinthejam · 20/05/2023 11:49

I've come to the conclusion that I probably won't ever get that cosy country cottage with roses round the door that I've been dreaming of my whole life.

kingtamponthefurred · 20/05/2023 11:51

I will probably never live in a house I have designed myself, with a glass frontage overlooking the ocean.

BinsinBonson · 20/05/2023 12:00

Ah, yes, sailing around the world and designing my own house were two of mine as well! I realised sailing was never going to happen after a taster weekend at my local water park and as for building a house... dp and I almost broke up over decorating a dining room and even hiring a decorator is a chore fraught with the risk of getting it wrong. So I don’t think project managing a Grand Designs affair with state of the art concrete mixes and highly specialist window installers is for us.
