Things I probably won't do

When I was young, I sort of assumed that I'd do everything! I would travel the world and experience life. And I've recently realised that at this point I probably won't ever go to South America, or own cast iron cookware.

What are you probably not going to get around to doing?

Be happily married

Go abroad

Have enough money

Have a social life

God I sound like a sad sack!

Mostar · 20/05/2023 12:24

Go to Australia, NZ, Japan or China. Drink wine. Own a mountain bike, a barbecue or a games console. Yoga. Chess. Shakespeare plays. Grow vegetables. Learn the names of birds. Visit any sort of palace, castle, stately home, antique shop or craft fair. Listen to Lewis Capaldi.

Be in a marriage with passion and affection

I always thought I'd have three chickens.

I feel quite affronted that I don't have chickens and may never have chickens, because how modest an aspiration is three chickens? Surely the universe could see fit for me to have three chickens.

I wanted to be an interpreter at The U.N.

I'm an early retiree with 6 grandchildren, the youngest (toddler) told me off for using her pet name and told me to use her proper name.

Own a house, have a fancy high paying job, own a horse, have three children with an amazingly handsome man who is also a surgeon or a human rights lawyer.
I wanted to be a famous archaeologist too- I've got a degree in Archaeology but now I'm a cleaner because life is like that. Mine is, anyway!

You have a degree in archaeology? Wow , you have my respect
I wish I was that clever

I'm guessing I'll never be able to buy that perfect mattress and make the perfect bed. I've invested loads of time and money into this, and it's really pretty good, but it's not what my grandmother was able to do... her fitted sheet mastery was second to none.

I'm not making light of lost dreams, I have simple hopes!

MySoCalledWife · 20/05/2023 21:14

Oh OP

you could still go for the cast iron pans and travel to Latin America… consider it

having proper old cast iron pans (I nicked them from MIL, sort of borrowed but kept them for 30 years 😂?) And living in South America are 2 of my life decisions I do not regret!

I won’t ever be a human rights lawyer for the UN, that’s what I wanted but I accept that now in my 50s and working in …. a boring corner of tech 😬 that will never happen

Graduate. Learn to play the piano. Learn to sail. Get a black belt in a martial art.

squidgybits · 20/05/2023 21:25

wear a bikini with confidence

foxlover47 · 20/05/2023 21:28

Have a long term loving relationship
And a house in the country where I could keep many different animals

myheartissoheavy · 20/05/2023 21:31

I'll probably never have the second baby I've spent so long hoping for.

Oblomov23 · 21/05/2023 04:33

I don't have any, all the places I wanted to visit I've been.

Mummadeze · 21/05/2023 06:08

I still believe I can do anything. I am 49 but haven’t given up hope.

wear a bikini with confidence

I think you can do that just by ageing!

extramaturecheddarcheese · 21/05/2023 07:31

Live in a flat in London (Barbican ideally) and spend my days going to galleries and theatre and markets.

autienotnaughtym · 21/05/2023 07:49

Go Disneyland. I have a slipped disc and can't imagine the walking/standing now. Also less keen on rides as I get older.

nobodygoesdowninthejungle · 21/05/2023 08:31

A lot of my dreams were destroyed when I realised that I don't like being cold or wet (which ruled out things like doing ocean sailing) and also just discovered the practicalities of being grown up. A cottage with roses around the door would be lovely to look at but my ugly 70s house is much easier to live in!

WhereMyRosemaryGoes · 22/05/2023 09:18

I don't think I'll ever be fluent in another language at this stage.

Australia, I couldn’t stand the long plane journey now. Own a horse, it’s just never going to happen.

StayGoldenPonyGirl · 22/05/2023 11:38

@WhereMyRosemaryGoes Do you have space for chickens without starting a war with neighbours? If so, do it - i've rescued ex factory farm hens a few times and it's so rewarding - you get to bring them back to health, introduce them to all new things, get loads of eggs and get chicken cuddles (people don't believe it til they see it but they can be very affectionate). They are very tying but, to be blunt, they don't live as long as cats and dogs, so you aren't stuck forever if it doesn't work out.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 29/06/2023 13:15

Give up smoking 😬

Bearpawk · 29/06/2023 13:21

@op why can't you own cast iron cookware?
Sainsbury's sells cheap own brand versions and I'm always seeing used le creuset in good nick on Fb marketplace.
That might help you tick one off the list!

GalileoHumpkins · 29/06/2023 13:26

Master Japanese, I can count to ten and know a few random words but that's it. My brain has a hard enough time with English these days!
