Dawson's Creek - OMG wtf?! Was it really that bad?

Hi,

I grew up with this show and loved it! Didn't bother with the college years, but loved the first few series as an early-mid teen.

I suggested my teen dd watched it a few days a go, as noticed a re run from the beginning but wow, it's so bad!

I don't remember it being so racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic and oh yes, then there's the casual paedophilia story line! And did they actually talk about anything other than sex?! I mean, I know it's a coming of age, teen angst drama, but it's just ridiculous. All of the characters are unlikeable at best. The script is awful, the writing is amateurish.

I asked my dd what she thought and she basically said it was crap. It hasn't aged well.

Not sure why I needed to rant about this 😂 but here it is!

Pacey, Joey, Abbey, Grams and Jack were the only characters I liked. Every other character just really grated on me!! I really, really couldn’t stand Jen!!

I was still a religious watcher though in my youth and I’ve even re-watched a few series in my adulthood.

This is incorrect, Jen was the best one.

I stumbled across james van see beeks instagram (now has 6 kids!!!) and he is still real life friends with the actress who played his mum (Gail Leery) then stumbled into her instagram and she is still friends with Katy Holmes. Lovely how their friendship lasted all these years after DC.

I loved it first time round and watched it again and was "WTF?!"

I can't even understand most of the dialogue now !!!

I've recently rewatched Dawson's creek and the OC and I missed episodes when it was shown first time round due to not having catch up back in the day. Both are on ITVX for streaming. I have to say I enjoyed both for nostalgia reasons but I think you have to not take them too seriously.

Loved pacey!

Going to search out one tree hill now as never saw that back in the day.

I loved Pacey's quirks. The line of his that stands out to me when he had use of his dads car:

"Let me hear you say yeeaaahh...let me hear you say oh yeahhh".

He's a nutter 😂

I used to be so obsessed with Dawson‘s Creek. I recorded it all on VHS and kept all the tapes!

The main memory that stands out is that I was so desperate for someone to like me like Dawson and Joey / Dawson and Jen / Pacey and Joey. I was so jealous of the characters for having a love life even though I was 12 😆

Also how Pacey broke up with Joey on the boat was awful. Totally out of character.

it's the best high school/teen angst show there has been.

It's really held up well.

Loooved Jordan Catalano so much (Jared Leto is a mega creep but Jordan is still lovely...and dim)

It was a bitter disappointment, Joey and Dawson are such pretentious twats!

I gave up after about episode 4. Maybe I should try again!

Dawson is just so annoying and sulky! I remember thinking he was the 'good guy' type, but actually he was just as misogynistic and self absorbed as the rest or the them.

I loved this show when it first came out, was completely obsessed.

When I rewatched it with my teen dd I was embarrassed by how bad it is, it definitely has not aged well.

Joey was always a complete pain in the arse but I hadn't realised quite how manipulative and nasty she was until I saw it through adult eyes. My dd thought it was crap and we gave up after a couple of episodes.

I tried to watch this as a teen at a friend's house and genuinely couldn't understand what they were saying. It seemed codified to the nth degree, and I hadn't watched from the start so I had no chance. I'm now wondering whether other people experienced that same falling-down-a-hole feeling I had trying to watch US sitcoms as a kid. I used to have to get up and go in another room, it felt like my brain giving up. (The exception was Frasier, and I liked the one with Michael J Fox in, for a bit.)

It's probably been mentioned, but Joshua Jackson was in his prime in Fringe. I enjoyed that show.

Agree, Dawson is on reflection beyond annoying. I was a lone Dawson liker at the time. I felt he was misunderstood!

I really like him in Mrs Miracle though.
