Why do so many brides continue to wear veils at their wedding?

Seems a bit weird and antiquated in this day and age ie being “revealed” to a prospective husband at the alter, having been “given away” by your father. Why do so many women continue with it?
in fact, so much of traditional wedding rites are just plain odd in this day and age.

I had one but it was just a short one and I didn’t wear it over my face. I had short hair and a strapless dress so it helped me look less “bare”

PeopleAreShit · 19/05/2023 11:08

Wore a veil at the back of my head to cover scars. Wasn’t give away by anyone. I wore it to look pretty!

TeapotCollection · 19/05/2023 11:12

I bought one but I put the iron through it the day before 😬

Of course it comes down to individual choices. You obviously aren’t the sort of weirdo that likes the whole simpering damsel thing. Hopefully someone else will come along and explain why it’s such a turn on for them to be passed from daddy to husband like an asset.

Turn on??

I know you're struggling here to make whatever sort of point you're so intent on making but 'turn on' makes your post sound pretty sick.

DejaVoodoo · 19/05/2023 11:21

Have a fantastic wedding, @RaininginDarling , however traditional it is or not. Sounds like you've found yourself a good 'un!

1stTimeMama · 19/05/2023 11:29

I wore one because I looked lovely. I didn't wear it over my face, but it finished off my wedding outfit.

1stTimeMama · 19/05/2023 11:30

I meant to write IT looked lovely, not I, though I did actually, even if I do day so myself!

Yes, turn on. See previous, where I said it was psychosexual. Some women like the idea of “belonging to men”. I’m not worried if my post sounds sick - I think it’s creepy to ask your dad to hand you over to your new husband like you’re a piece of property.

You're right, of course, he's not wearing a veil or wedding dress.should I ask for a refund? 😂

My soon to be husband is my equal. He doesn't need to embrace any wedding traditions for me to know that. But let me tell you about some of the ways he does show up for me.

Three months after he proposed, he had to drive 40 miles every day to our local hospital to see me for an hour because I became seriously ill with a life-threatening condition. He often worked from his car to be nearby. He made me nice things to eat, bought me fresh clothing every day, and chased down doctors when the IV morphine was needed, which was often.

When I was made redundant from a high status job, some years back, he picked up the financial burden, he never complained, and encouraged me when I retrained. I'll probably never earn as much again and frankly, that was hard to deal with. He's never made me feel inadequate.

He relocated to be with me. And made the effort to make his own friends and get involved with our local community.

He's paid for the whole wedding because I dont have the funds or family - mostly NC. And, even though its his second marriage and my first, he's just as enthusiastic to celebrate with all those we love. We've chosen everything together and had a lot of fun doing so.

He's been my best friend, my advocate, my trusted other for well over a decade. Soon, we will both wear rings to symbolise a legal commitment to each other, although that commitment already exists.

I'm sad for you that you find this all so joyless.

And THANK YOU, we will have a lovely day!

And to everyone else: apologies for the slight derail.

I hope you have a lovely day but more important a long and happy marriage

Goldenbear · 19/05/2023 11:40

I had one but that was 7 years ago and it didn't cover my face, it was my Mum's from the 1960's so it was 'something borrowed' and it was beautifully made and pretty cool tbh, pure aesthetic!

Lcb123 · 19/05/2023 11:40

Each their own surely. I think feminism and progessive society goes a bit wider than wearing a veil. I've never been to a wedding where the bride has put it over their face. I wore a birdcage one at mine as I wanted something special

Bluemuf · 19/05/2023 11:41

The whole white dress thing is ridiculous and outdated if youre going to anaylise it, but people like it. That's a good enough reason for most things.

MIL chose the photo of me with my face covered as her favourite of all our wedding pics 😆

So if you already know why it's apparently a turn on, and you're the only person who's sexualising it...why are you asking them to explain it to you? Genuinely interested.

Excellent point.

Goldenbear · 19/05/2023 11:47

Culturally, my heritage is not one where wives were beaten out of tradition, I wonder what culture that prevailed in. The traditional beating 🤔

I think you win the award for the strangest poster this week. I really don't think this is as common as you believe, and it certainly isn't why the tradition started. Your very niche kink knowledge is erm interesting.

strawberryFforever · 19/05/2023 11:57

Most aspects of traditional weddings are antiquated

Load of bollocks. I cant be arsed with it all

Nowhere near as creepy as bringing sex into it.

You do you but don't be surprised when others think it's sick.

Could be a bloke getting fodder?

iamturtle · 19/05/2023 14:47

out of interest, do those objecting to women wearing a head covering once a lifetime for their wedding object equally (and as vociferously) to women wearing a head covering every single day for their religion? if not, why not?

davegrohll · 19/05/2023 14:54

I wore a veil, not over my face though. It suited me, I felt very bridal and it also covered my back up which I didn't want on show with a strapless dress

PlainJanePerfect · 19/05/2023 15:44

My ex wanted it. He liked the idea of unwrapping me "like a present". I made him do some of our traditions so it seemed fair. You only cover your face walking down the aisle and then he peels it back for the big reveal. It's just a bit of excitement and drama now.

😵You've just won creepiest comment of the thread award.

HinnyInAPinny · 19/05/2023 16:06

Turn on? I've heard it all now 😂
If I had been presented with a multi million pound winning lottery ticket at the top of the aisle, then I might have nipped to the loo for a quick thrapping between the photos.
As it was, there was just my husband waiting for me, so no thrapping needed.

It used to be tradition to be able to beat your wife also. It doesn't mean we still have to do it.
