76mph in a 50 zone - what to expect

My hands are in the air, was driving somewhere new for the first time today (only me in the car) and was on a 70mph dual carriage way, then I see police on bridge above with speed camera looked at speed and see on the sat nav to my horror the road had changed to 50, before I knew it back up to 70.

Iv definitely been busted in that bit of road. And feel a complete idiot!!

Anyone have any recent experience?

I know that I was speeding so if you are just popping on the tell me I could have killed someone etc please don’t, I am looking for genuine people who have experience of this.

Also sat navs and car speeds are often wrong. The fact there was a van there means it's probably was 50 but never fully trust what your car or sat nav says.

Really? I would’ve thought that could be challenged as I wouldn’t think the police/council could safely say the cameras were calibrated accurately to within one mile.

I don't suppose they'll report that part!

I did a straw poll on a local Facebook group when the dawdling got on my wick.

80% of people had no idea that the NSL local bypass has a 60 limit. Most thought it was 50 and others 40.

When asked about a NSL road with a solid central barrier they thought that was “probably a 60”. It’s a 70.

I’m going to assume they are the same fuckwits that do 40 everywhere else, whether it’s a 20, 30 40 or 50, park opposite or on junctions and think the merge lane is to be left clear so that everyone can queue for longer in one lane.

No way am I sitting behind any of these idiots. First chance I get to overtake I’m taking it. At a lot more than the speed limit if necessary.

Whilst I don't agree with speeding or overtaking people at whatever speed you feel necessary, I do think people underestimate how dangerous driving far below the speed limit is. These threads always attract the holier than thou drivers that never go beyond 60mph and I always think, I bet you don't realise how dangerous it is so drive too slow on a motorway. Especially when you're cruising at the speed limit and can't judge depth easily and you suddenly get to some idiot driving 40mph and have to slam your breaks.

Exactly my point. I remember when I moved to Germany and spoke to local wives and their families, they hate seeing uk plates on the autobahn, they say we are more dangerous because of our 70mph driving. I'm a confident driver and there was times I felt intimidated on their motorway. However they are taught to drive defensively, and to get best fuel consumption etc. There's a huge difference between a defensive and aggressive driver..... Anxious drivers do sometimes rile me but I live rurally and know the 60mph roads..... When they are cautiously driving at 35/40 it's irritating....with few straights to overtake.

Sorry have to disagree with you on this one lol 60mph country roads will always scare me and I will always be that slow driver that pisses you off 🙈 I just can't see how someone can drive so fast on them. You've no idea what's around the corner, however well you know the route.

You keep your speed down so that you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear. At 60mph on a dry road that’s about 4-5 car lengths in a modern car. Not suggesting that you should be flying about the place but I think people overestimate their stopping distances. At 30mph it’s not much more than the car’s own length. Have to add thinking distance of course.

Possibly. I'm not sure though. I think at 60mph on a country roads, the bends come so quickly. Weirdly I am less scared of country roads at night, as you can see the lights of the car coming towards you quite early on.
