76mph in a 50 zone - what to expect

Vegasfox · 17/05/2023 16:15

My hands are in the air, was driving somewhere new for the first time today (only me in the car) and was on a 70mph dual carriage way, then I see police on bridge above with speed camera looked at speed and see on the sat nav to my horror the road had changed to 50, before I knew it back up to 70.

Iv definitely been busted in that bit of road. And feel a complete idiot!!

Anyone have any recent experience?

I know that I was speeding so if you are just popping on the tell me I could have killed someone etc please don’t, I am looking for genuine people who have experience of this.

MN gets very Judge Jeffreys about speeding.

Yeah, it's probably something to do with it being a potential killer.

I’m not disputing it isn’t. But many posters get myopic about it and other things kill people on the roads besides excessive speed. A friend of mine was killed by a woman who was driving on almost bald tyres and braked too hard. She was within the speed limit. How many posters here obey the speed limits but never check the tyres?

Dh got done for doing 90 in a 50 (roadworks on motorway). He got 6 points and £1k fine. This was during covid (the 2nd lockdown) so think that was the only reason it didn't go to court!!

It's people like this that show that the law needs to be tougher. Should have been 12 points and a 5 year ban. 90mph isn't accidentally missing a drop in the speed limit or going a couple of mph over due to the flow of traffic. It's chosen behaviour, it's a driver saying the law doesn't apply to them and they can do what they want. With that sort of mentality the law should be keeping them of the roads for a long time for the good of society.

I've had friends killed by dangerous drivers. I don't give a flying f* if op doesn't want judgement. She was over the max speed limit on a dual carriageway, and was even more over a lowered limit which she didn't notice. She's a dangerous driver by any standards. Dangerous drivers affect everyone. So no I won't keep my 'beak out' as you so delightfully phrased it. Perhaps if more of us condemned reckless carelessness like op has blatantly displayed our roads would be safer.

@Lizzt2007 - I'm with you on this. 76 mph is 6 mph more than the national limit for all roads, and if the limit is less, it is VERY prominently displayed, so if they were paying attention, how did they miss it?

Shade17 · 17/05/2023 20:40

Hopefully that was an indicated 76, with luck your actual speed was a couple of mph slower and in that case you should get a standard fixed penalty. Assuming the car’s registered to you then hold your breath for the next 14 days!

How stupid.
Thank god he didn't injure or kill anyone innocent.

I would really question whether I would want to continue to be with someone if they did that.

No excuses.

Myn · 17/05/2023 16:53

@Whichnumbers it definitely is in my force, it's now referred to court if you wish to contest your fine and have the court hear the circumstances.

Sorry I’m not sure what definitely is in your force?

Vegasfox · 18/05/2023 08:38

Thank you all for your comments. I think previous posters are right it’s highly speculative until it happens and comes through, I will update the thread though.

I have read that apparently motorway speeding offences seem more lenient, some anecdotes here suggest the same, no idea why that is.

totally get that 76 is still too fast for a 70 bit of road but it happens. I didn’t see a sign for 50, it seems that the road dips down under a bridge a bit then widens out and that’s the bit that’s 50, probably less than a mile - I should have paid more attention but it had gone from 70-50 back to 70 so quickly!

will watch and wait 🤦🏻‍♀️ - and drive at 30 everywhere from now on

Shade17 · 18/05/2023 11:05

I’d bet money on it being less than 76mph or even not hearing anything.

xogossipgirlxo · 18/05/2023 11:09

Can you track on google street view if there really was a change to 50mph? Google maps sometimes read speed limit from other roads, which is incorrect.

Redebs · 18/05/2023 11:22

The 10% + 2 is definitely a thing in my area; it's on the local police website.

OP definitely go along to court. Sometimes these get dismissed if an officer isn't available to come along.

The fact that you rely on your licence for work/caring responsibilities means you are unlikely to lose your licence, but it will cost you in fines and increased insurance premiums. A while back there was a guy near me who kept his licence after speeding so that he could take his dog out in his Bentley!

You do seem a bit blasè about speeding though. You have already done a speeding awareness course. You think it's a joke and claim you will drive everywhere at 30mph.

I hope you change your attitude before you kill someone.

76 in a 70 zone (I’m obviously leaving aside the fact op missed the change of limit here) is, depending on the conditions, hardly the same as bombing down a busy residential street at 40 or even doing the limit in some situations. Which is presumably why it is widely tolerated and why the question of raising the national limit to 80 comes up from time to time.

I agree with the Judge Jeffries comment - there is a lack of perspective on this.

LizzieBananas · 18/05/2023 11:51

@WonderingWanda
What do you mean by “top”? Like if they have a quota of 40, is it like the first 40 speeders or the fastest 40?

plasticpens · 18/05/2023 11:59

@Allodole

It was 76 in a 50 though. So I will absolutely judge that.

Completely agree with you. That’s why I said I was putting that aspect to one side - I was addressing the Judge Jeffreys comment and the fact some posters are shocked at anyone driving at 76 even if the limit had been 70 as she thought.

Obviously 70+ in 50 zone is a different kettle of fish altogether.

Whiteroomjoy · 18/05/2023 12:36

viques · 17/05/2023 18:31

I did a speed awareness course. The best advice the tutor gave was to use your speed limiter. Easy to switch off if you need to go on a motorway, but it is easy to end up going slightly above the limit in built up areas.

This.
but in fairness, op says it was dual carriageway (with I assume central re which is why she says most of it was 70limit,) , and she didn’t notice it has gone to a restricted zone at 50mph, so she wouldn’t have reset the limiter and still been happily driving through-even if she set it to a exactly legal 70mph for the dual carriageway.

limiters are fab to stop you inadvertently increasing speed where you’ve set it to correct speed limit for that stretch of road, but ain’t going to help if you don’t read the road signs properly.

Harryisabollock · 18/05/2023 12:57

I got caught doing 69 in a 40 (dual carriageway roadworks) and I got 3 points and a fine of £100 on a clean license.

You won’t know until something comes in the door.

Was 76 on your Speedometer or on your app?

Speedometers are not permitted to under report, therefore in the UK at least they tend to overestimate. In which case your 76 could be 70. But if it’s a navigator/app then 76 would be about right

Assuming the letter arrives you’ll be offered the points & fine, a course if permitted (which might not be for 76 vs 50) but with the option of court.
If you’re facing a ban due to points then you have the court option to accept you did it but ask for keeping your licence (and a greater fine etc)

tommika · 18/05/2023 13:17

But there is always the chance that the police didn’t snap you, that the 50 wasn’t actively in force, etc
If the 50 wasn’t in force (Temporary restriction at works etc which were not active ) and you were 76 in 70 then improved technology can mean the old percentage allowance isn’t used and you would still be facing a potential ticket

OP said she was doing 76 in a 50, even 76 in a 70 would get a ticket.

No it wouldn't.....

CareerQuestioner · 17/05/2023 17:20

I was done for doing 23 in a 20 so the 10%+2 thing is definitely not the case everywhere.

Well given your speedo is showing different to your actually speed.... Cars have done this for years to try slow people down. At 70mph on your speedo your actually doing approx 65mph. So in your case you were doing more than 23 for an absolute fact. 23 on your speedo would be 20/21mph.

Really? Speedos are over estimating every car speedo? So I’m not match the speed of other cars? Please do link the evidence for this from your conspiracy theory website. Is every MOT station breaking the law checking speedos are accurate?

And from knowledge speedos aren't checked on mot????

CombatBarbie · 18/05/2023 13:43

Hence why the variation 10% some counties do 10+2 or 3, some are dead on 10%.
