76mph in a 50 zone - what to expect

My hands are in the air, was driving somewhere new for the first time today (only me in the car) and was on a 70mph dual carriage way, then I see police on bridge above with speed camera looked at speed and see on the sat nav to my horror the road had changed to 50, before I knew it back up to 70.

Iv definitely been busted in that bit of road. And feel a complete idiot!!

Anyone have any recent experience?

I know that I was speeding so if you are just popping on the tell me I could have killed someone etc please don’t, I am looking for genuine people who have experience of this.

Colleague of mine was done for doing 95 on the motorway and got a £100 fine and 3 points.

I got pulled at 88 and must have caught the delightful officer on a good day. He gave me a warning.

Arsehole speed camera did me at 34,.

I had a friend who was caught doing 90 in a 50 and I was certain she'd get a massive fine and a ban, but she got £100 fine and 3 points. I think if it's in a targeted area where the police are running an operation or its a particularly bad accident area, it can be worse though.

Really? Speedos are over estimating every car speedo? So I’m not match the speed of other cars? Please do link the evidence for this from your conspiracy theory website. Is every MOT station breaking the law checking speedos are accurate?

My car shows I'm doing 3mph faster than I am. Every time I go through one of those speed check signs it's always 3mph difference.

northwitchy · 18/05/2023 13:58

I did 55 in a 30 a few years ago. I got a fine £100 and 3 points.

I doubt she will be back as I've given evidence which backs up my statement that speedos are always faster than the speed your actually going at.

TallulahBetty · 18/05/2023 14:02

So either way you were speeding then?

GCWorkNightmare · 18/05/2023 14:05

HannahHasThePower · 17/05/2023 17:00

Isn’t that folk lore that used to be spouted when speedos weren’t accurate?

They still aren’t accurate

GCWorkNightmare · 18/05/2023 14:11

18 year old car has a calibrated speedo (also a track car) so it’s accurate to about 1mph.
I’d say 95% of the drivers I encounter do max 3-5mph below the speed limit for the road.

12 year old car is about 8% out. I mentally adjust for that.

7 year old car is closer to 10% out. Presumably because this was the point when car manufacturers decided the car should do the driving not the driver.

They still aren’t accurate

I’ve noticed that as cars have got newer the speedos are more accurate. They always under read but these days it’s normally by 1 or 2 mph at 70 where as they used to be more like 5 or 6 mph and that used to run out even further as you got up to higher speeds, 10+mph at an indicated 150.

It's not a conspiracy but everyone with any kind of satnav knows the car registers about 3mph slower than the sat nav...

GCWorkNightmare · 18/05/2023 14:22

Is every MOT station breaking the law checking speedos are accurate?

The MOT doesn’t check accuracy. It checks that it works or not. Not that it is accurate.

Hungryfrogs23 · 18/05/2023 14:26

At that speed you wouldn't be eligible for a speed awareness course, so I would assume it will go to court.

It always amazes me that people understand the leeway given to compensate for inaccurate speedometers, but then assume theirs is deadly accurate and drive over the limit into the tolerance zone, or worse still, drive over the limit +10% +2, because they assume their speedometer is showing too low anyway.
Dangerous thinking.

And it's a limit, not a target.

I'm actually sick of aggressive drivers tailgating me because I stick to the speed limit. Time they were taken seriously and put off the road for repeat offences.

PinkFootstool · 18/05/2023 14:35

Have you actually checked the speed limit in that area?

My sat nav (Google Maps) lies to me all the time, especially on the M4 from Bristol to Cardiff where the speed limits do vary. I never rely on it anymore.

treespouse · 18/05/2023 14:58

If you're going by your own speedometer to say you were doing 76 you were probably actually only doing 73ish. Car speedos tend to overegg the speed

You might just get points + fine. You might not. Sorry to sound blasé but there's no point in worrying until the letter turns up. There is literally nothing you can do but wait.

RedToothBrush · 18/05/2023 15:00

gamerchick · 17/05/2023 16:49

Even if it was 70 you were still speeding though. Nothing to do with changing to 50.

This.

It'll be a ban probably.

If you admit to not realising that's not just speeding but driving without due care and attention...

SecretVictoria · 18/05/2023 15:12

BishopRock · 17/05/2023 17:22

My local paper recently wrote up about a local who had been caught speeding at the other end of the country. He'd been doing 71 in a 70 and got done for it.

Really? I would’ve thought that could be challenged as I wouldn’t think the police/council could safely say the cameras were calibrated accurately to within one mile.

sillyonehetpes · 18/05/2023 15:23

Already admitting to going 6 over the speed limit.

Hope your lose your licence

There we are then. No issue provided you’re in the furthest lane that you can be. I’ll sail past and we’ll both be happy.

(Driving nearly 30 years with full racing and advanced driving licences. Never had any points or cautions for driving.)

PinkChampange · 18/05/2023 15:26

I had the same thing though it was a 40 then into the 30. I didn't see the sign change to 30 and got caught doing 40. I had to pay £80 and do a drivers awareness course

And she's probably lying about her speed as well.

If the speed limit is 70 you should stick at 70 on your car speedo

CombatBarbie · 18/05/2023 15:45

These threads always make me laugh, let's hope we never exchange to autobahns like in Europe..... Who incidentally have fewer accidents than UK but allow for speeds way in excess of 70mph.

Sppednin built up areas where a pedestrian is likely to walk out.... Yes absolutely do not condone speeding. A motorway with flowing traffic or empty..... Come on! And those bleating on about drivers being up their arses..... I'm going to take that as youve been in the wrong lane....

GCWorkNightmare · 18/05/2023 17:30

I did a straw poll on a local Facebook group when the dawdling got on my wick.

80% of people had no idea that the NSL local bypass has a 60 limit. Most thought it was 50 and others 40.

When asked about a NSL road with a solid central barrier they thought that was “probably a 60”. It’s a 70.

I’m going to assume they are the same fuckwits that do 40 everywhere else, whether it’s a 20, 30 40 or 50, park opposite or on junctions and think the merge lane is to be left clear so that everyone can queue for longer in one lane.

No way am I sitting behind any of these idiots. First chance I get to overtake I’m taking it. At a lot more than the speed limit if necessary.

User14528564 · 18/05/2023 17:48

As an aside, I spotted that in our county the mobile speed vans are grey to not be spotted, we passed one today hiding in the hedge.

BlueThursday · 18/05/2023 17:54

The constant 40s do scare me.

on a dual carriageway: 40
outside a school with clear 20 markings: 40

TakeMyStrongHand · 18/05/2023 18:50

These threads come up all the time and they are always filled with absolute bollocks.

Please see below table. You may get a summons/face prosecution as you are right on the nose. That being said you haven't yet received the NIP yet so if your car says 76, you won't have been.

You can see what your actual speed was by Googling how far out your manufacturer puts the speedo. For all factory standard cars, they are out by a designated amount. If you buy after market wheels this will affect very very slightly.

You were probably doing 73/4 so you will get a fine of £100 and 3 points. You only get a % of your wage if you dispute or it goes to court.

It's your duty now to tell us what you got.
