Prejudices against innocent everyday items

PolkaDotMankini · 16/05/2023 11:16

I realised when picking a substitution yesterday that I consider lemon-scented cleaning products "common". I have no idea why I think this, but I've always avoided them. I now have over 100 lemon-scented dishwasher tablets that I'll be hiding from visitors.

Anyone else have weird prejudices against innocent everyday items?

I think this about any lavender scented product. Makes me think of 1950s grannies. Vile smell imo.

UnderPar · 16/05/2023 11:47

Vanilla spray. Because it’s so commonly used in loos that it makes me think of poo.

RaininginDarling · 16/05/2023 11:49

Vanilla scented anything.

Any cleaning product or air-freshenerwith a floral smell

PearPartridge · 16/05/2023 11:53

I'm prejudiced against flowers that I remember from my childhood. Dahlias are popular but I can't like them. They remind me of my dysfunctional birth family

WhatWouldHopperDo · 16/05/2023 11:54

Almost any kind of synthetic air freshener - they all remind me of nappy bags and all they do is add a sickly element to whatever smell you're trying to cover.

I also have very fussy but can't quite describe, preferences around cutlery - especially teaspoons.

Infusionist · 16/05/2023 11:55

Any product that turns loo water strange colours. My very posh granny always had it so I don’t know why I think it’s common as muck!

RaininginDarling · 16/05/2023 12:04

Those synthetic sprays to disguise the smells lingering in your carpets and furniture. CLEAN THEM, you lazy forkers.

I judge any cleaning product contained in a Barbie pink bottle as being unserious and likely to cause a skin reaction. Based on no experience whatsoever.

WHY do people want blue toilet water?

CharlottenBurger · 16/05/2023 12:08

DP and I really hate those scented 'bio' laundry products like Ariel. I can smell the scent on people who have washed their clothes in it, and sometimes it wafts out of open windows as I am walking along a street. In strong concentrations it sets off my asthma, as DP and I found out when we bought some tablets so we could use one to try and clear mould from our washing machine. It stunk out the house, and the opened box containing the rest was horrible! We left it out on the front wall as 'wall treasure' (a thing in our area) with a note saying 'PLEASE TAKE'. They were gone in minutes. We do have a little oil vapouriser (the 'smell machine') that we put stuff like basil oil on, in SMALL AMOUNTS. Can't bear Olbas Oil. We try not to judge things or people as 'common' except at home privately between ourselves! But yes.

RaininginDarling · 16/05/2023 12:05

WHY do people want blue toilet water?

For the same reason as they use a blue colour in tampon ads on the TV? Piss? Shit? Yuk! Period blood? Double yuk! Not that I personally would mind if they used red ink in those period-products ads, but you know how advertisers' minds work. Hide all the messy parts of life away.

PolkaDotMankini · 16/05/2023 12:16

You'd hate my house. Lavender and rosemary everywhere.

Only on mumsnet would someone claim a bio laundry product stunk the house out. I don't know how people live their lives when everyday stuff is so dramatic 😂

HappyHealthy23 · 16/05/2023 12:19

Any toilet paper other than standard white. My DD wanted to buy pink toilet paper recently and DH had to explain why that was not acceptable (having learned this early on in our relationship). Ditto kitchen towel - patterns are not acceptable (to me, I don't care what anyone else uses).
Agree with overly-scented laundry products also.

SilentParrot · 16/05/2023 12:20

Bars of soap.

Yes, I know they use less plastic, and yes, I know people swear it gets them cleaner than shower gel, and yes, I know Claus Porto soap is trés fancy and expensive, but I really can’t stand bars of soap. They’re slimy and they often have mysterious hairs stuck to them. Yech.

A nice bottle of liquid hand wash for me every time thanks.

It's not 'drama'. Please don't be so judgy. I did mention how it set off my asthma, and if you dislike a smell, a lot, what are supposed to do about it? Pretend you don't in case the MN attitude police come knocking? That stuff is designed to have a penetrating smell. We don't like it. Suck it up.

DP said he didn't like patterned kitchen towel, but when the local corner shop stopped selling the plain one I got a roll of Regina Blitz which is blue patterned in Tesco. Now that's his favourite. He does call it 'Vagina Blitz' though.

pineapple360 · 16/05/2023 12:33

People on here hate toilet brushes!

Regina Blitz is the GOAT of kitchen towels. I'm glad he's seen the error of his ways.

iwantawisteriathisyear · 16/05/2023 12:36

I can't stand anything pine scented. It reminds me of 1960/70s public toilets and izal loo roll. Absolutely loathe it.

MarsDestroyerOfWorlds · 16/05/2023 12:42

Anything vanilla scented gives me headaches. I like lavender and rosemary, though.

Prawn cocktail crisps. I have no idea why these are less classy than cheese and onion; they just are. I love actual prawn cocktails.

Prosecco. I’m quite happy to drink Cava, or other fizzy wines.

Lysianthus · 16/05/2023 12:47

@CharlottenBurger slightly off topic but I was Clutching at my Pearls when I watched the latest Always ad and the water has turned red! Someone had to pass the smelling salts and I fell onto my chaise longue.

TidyHomeTidyMind · 16/05/2023 12:52

Is the blue toilet water/fake period blood not because blue is seen as a 'clean ' colour by most people.....not sure if I made that up though!

Thistooshallpsss · 16/05/2023 12:52

Just to give the opposite everyday smells that you like pears soap reminds me of my grandmothers house by the sea where we always went for our holidays and lavender because she grew bushes of it and made lavender bags from it.
