Do you say Wensdy Thursdy Fridy, or Wensday Thursday Friday, and where are you from?

DP and I have just realised that he pronounces the end of day names with a fully-realised "-day", while I use a shorter "-dy" sound, and I can't work out whether it's a regional thing (I'm northern English, he's southern English), one of those obscure English poshness indicators, or I'm just lazier Grin

Southerner here - defo not posh, but say ‘day’ clearly

tuvamoodyson · 11/05/2023 16:50

Wedensday, Thursdy, Friday….Central Scotland.

Rummikub · 11/05/2023 16:51

Used to be the first (north west) but now say the latter. I think that happened at uni.

mynameiscalypso · 11/05/2023 16:51

I can't really understand what you mean. When I try to say it with 'dy' at the end, I sound Australian!

HappilyContentTheseDays · 11/05/2023 16:51

I say a very clear "day".....East Midlands area.

AppleCinnamonBagel · 11/05/2023 16:52

Wenz-day.

DamnAndDashIt · 11/05/2023 16:52

Wensday, Thursday and Frideh

Go figure!

(West Yorks)

WeDoNotTalktoPennilynLott · 11/05/2023 16:52

I say them properly. North East

plasticpens · 11/05/2023 16:52

You say wens? Not wedens?

I

Coronationstation · 11/05/2023 16:53

somewhere between the two and also depends how fast I'm talking. it might also depend who i'm talking to (I have a lot of strong accent influence in my life!)

TomatoSandwiches · 11/05/2023 16:54

I say Wed - nez - day, clear pronounced day in the South East.

Phos · 11/05/2023 16:55

I had to think about this and its a mixture. I'm from Yorkshire but I've lived all over.

When its in the middle of a sentence it's the first e.g. "I've got to to to Bristol next Wensdy" or "DD's off to party on Fridy night" but if someone asked me a question and I give a one word answer it would be the latter e.g. "When is Sarah's party?" "Friday"

Day at the end.

I'm surprised some people are saying they pronounce the D in Wednesday, I can't ever recall it being pronounced with a D.

Try it with a Scouse accent.

moleeye · 11/05/2023 17:00

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Proper pronunciation - East Londoner

My mum is an immigrant and as a result insisted on us enunciating every word ever

I can hear it and think I sound like a right dick sometimes 😂

No, I've never heard anyone do that either… I deliberately avoided Tuesday because of the whole tyoo vs choo vs too thing, and Saturday because I usually pronounce that as Satdy whereas I know most people say it as three syllables. But actually saying Wed-nes-day or Wed-ens-day? Never noticed anyone doing that except the occasional non-native speaker… perhaps they do it so subtly I don't notice.

Wed-enz-day and then also pronounce the ‘day’ in all others.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 11/05/2023 17:03

Southerner, meant to add.

Dy northern England/Australian.

motherofawhirlwind · 11/05/2023 17:04

Mine all end in dee, which is a Nene (Nen) valley accent Smile

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 11/05/2023 17:06

The ‘d’ in Wednesday is slightly swollowed, almost stopped on and then ‘glided’ over.

AlltheFs · 11/05/2023 17:07

Definitely Day here, and the D in Wednesday but it is very subtle. I live in rural East Mids, born in Bristol and mostly raised in South East though.

Three syllables? Are you British?

doopsy · 11/05/2023 17:10

West Midlands. Definitely day ending and Wednesday has a d but not in the same place as it’s spelled, more like Wendsday. Friday is Fri-yay! Well it is at work!
