Do you say Wensdy Thursdy Fridy, or Wensday Thursday Friday, and where are you from?

DP and I have just realised that he pronounces the end of day names with a fully-realised "-day", while I use a shorter "-dy" sound, and I can't work out whether it's a regional thing (I'm northern English, he's southern English), one of those obscure English poshness indicators, or I'm just lazier Grin

I am struggling to believe people genuinely say Wed-nes-day. I have never come across someone saying it like that!

Why wouldn’t you pronounce Wednesday properly?

it’s not like people are sticking in a random letter - as in folk who say “drawring” instead of “drawing” - they are sounding out the letters in the word.

Christmascracker0 · 11/05/2023 18:57

Another “wedensday” Scot here - I’m highlands.

I also always pronounce Saturday with a hard T.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/05/2023 18:58

I pronounce the whole word. Mon-day, tues-day, wedens-day etc. East Scotland.

I'm sure you didn't mean this to be rude, but given almost every poster who has said that they say 3 syllables has clarified they are Scottish, do you think they are all wrong or perhaps you just aren't very familiar with Scottish accents? Like all the other posters who have identified as being from Edinburgh/East Lothian/Other east coast areas of Scotland, I too most definitely say it with three syllables!

I teach in England and always think the Scottish accent is very useful for spelling things correctly. Much more closely related to what is written. I thought this again when reading out the spellings for the Y6 SATS on Tuesday!

ShakeYourFeathers · 11/05/2023 19:04

I pronounce the day. But say Wensday

FuckNuggets · 11/05/2023 19:07

It's more of a Wensdee for me. I'm in the NW.

RunThroughTheJungle · 11/05/2023 19:12

I clearly say Day, NE

Maddy70 · 11/05/2023 19:13

The later and I'm from north Wales

It reminds me of the time the late Brian Sewell recalled complimented someone on their pronunciation of the word “geography”
for anyone unfamiliar, Brian spoke very correctly and enunciated beautifully, so he said “gee-og-ra-fee”

the person was a little puzzled and asked “How do I say it?”

”Correctly,” Brian responded, sounding out every single letter, as was his want.

I think he’d approve of the Scottish pronunciation of Wednesday

I didn't realise until this thread that was how it was pronounced in Scotland. In England the usual pronunciation is Wenz/day.

Squidger45 · 11/05/2023 19:21

CremeEggThief · 11/05/2023 19:23

Wed/ens/day and Thursday etc. as per your second example. I'd never say Wensday though.
