Do you say Wensdy Thursdy Fridy, or Wensday Thursday Friday, and where are you from?

DP and I have just realised that he pronounces the end of day names with a fully-realised "-day", while I use a shorter "-dy" sound, and I can't work out whether it's a regional thing (I'm northern English, he's southern English), one of those obscure English poshness indicators, or I'm just lazier Grin

Me and DH same as you two.

DH also says yesterDAY whereas I say YESterday. I’m the southern one.

My Lancashire granny said yesterday like that; is he from that side of the hills?

mathanxiety · 11/05/2023 21:50

I pronounce the 'day' syklable clearly.

Brought up in Dublin.

mathanxiety · 11/05/2023 21:51

West Midlands. Definitely day ending and Wednesday has a d but not in the same place as it’s spelled, more like Wendsday. Friday is Fri-yay! Well it is at work!

I'm 26 years old and only just realised that I say WENDSDAY. West Midlander also.

I personally say "Fri-day" but I do hear a lot of Fri-dee/dy round here, as well as Fri-DAAAAAAAY or Fri-DYYYE.

Bbq1 · 11/05/2023 22:20

Northwest (Liverpool) and I say day as most people do in the city.

Yep agreed.

CaptainSeven · 11/05/2023 23:06

Wed-enz-day. Definitely has 3 syllables.

Thursday and Friday, full day pronounced.

Central Scotland.

Scorchio84 · 12/05/2023 01:43

I (Irish) ) say "Wensday" but the other days are just ordinary "Monday..blah blah"

MoltenLasagne · 12/05/2023 02:06

Originally Brummie, now in W Yorks.

I say Wends-day, but that's because my Mum "corrected" my Wenz-dy pronunciation along with lots of other Brummie-isms she didn't like such as buzz (bus) and to-die (today).

MoltenLasagne · 12/05/2023 02:08

I now want to ask everyone I know to pronounce Wednesday for me.

Phos · 12/05/2023 09:46

@Yorkshireteaformethanks possibly … I am from Yorkshire after all and I very much approve of your choice of beverage, I’m drinking one right now.

Yorkshireteaformethanks · 12/05/2023 10:08

@Phos snap! 👌🏼

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/05/2023 13:29

My husband, Sheffield born and bred and Sheffield Wednesday supporter, says Wensdee. (I'm in the wed-ens-day camp)

BuffaloFeathers · 12/05/2023 13:54

I learnt English as a second language in school (in northern Europe) and was taught to say it with "Dy" at the end. It always felt wrong to me and I usually say it with "day" at the end. I do say wensday thought rather than wed nes day.
