Do you say Wensdy Thursdy Fridy, or Wensday Thursday Friday, and where are you from?

DP and I have just realised that he pronounces the end of day names with a fully-realised "-day", while I use a shorter "-dy" sound, and I can't work out whether it's a regional thing (I'm northern English, he's southern English), one of those obscure English poshness indicators, or I'm just lazier Grin

Dh says Toosdi for Tuesday. He’s from the depths of Suffolk.

FatGirlSwim · 11/05/2023 19:31

I say -day (Northern) and DH says ‘dy’ (more like -dee)… he’s Southern, says grarse and Barth etc.

Amandasummers · 11/05/2023 19:57

I say dy generally although sometimes say day. Im from essex

StaunchMomma · 11/05/2023 20:03

Was raised in a Midlands town where it's generally 'dee' (family still say it like this) but have been gone so long I now say 'day'. Not really a conscious decision but when all you hear is 'day' you eventually switch to that.

WhutWhutWhut · 11/05/2023 20:03

motherofawhirlwind · 11/05/2023 19:55

It's still Nene.
Nen makes my toes curl its so wrong!

Do you call it Nen Valley Railway?

zurala · 11/05/2023 20:06

I say day. I was born in the Midlands to Southern parents and now live in the South.

DH says dy. He was born in the Midlands to Brummies and obviously also now lives in the South

He also says Satdy for Saturday which drives me insane. We both day Choos for Tuesday.

TattiePants · 11/05/2023 20:08

I’m from the north east and clearly say day.

sueelleker · 11/05/2023 20:09

AppleCinnamonBagel · 11/05/2023 16:52

Wenz-day.

SE England here-I agree, and also use 'day'.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/05/2023 20:13

3WildOnes · 11/05/2023 19:20

I didn't realise until this thread that was how it was pronounced in Scotland. In England the usual pronunciation is Wenz/day.

I'm English and I say Wed-ens-day and always have. I grew up mainly in SE England but have lived in the North for over 30 years.

itsabigtree · 11/05/2023 20:35

I've never thought about it until now but I end them in DY

Apart from Friday and Sunday! Dunno what that's all about.

Can't believe there i people out there saying 'wed enz day' tho, that's surreal.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/05/2023 18:53

Mundi chewsdi Wensdi thursdi frydi.
S Yorkshire

Same here. S London. Also satdi has no T sound (so glottal T like water without the T)

motherofawhirlwind · 11/05/2023 20:41

WhutWhutWhut · 11/05/2023 20:03

It's still Nene.

Yup! Nen for all iterations of Nene Smile Neen feels totally alien and wrong to me.

Me and DH same as you two.

DH also says yesterDAY whereas I say YESterday. I’m the southern one.

napody · 11/05/2023 20:46

motherofawhirlwind · 11/05/2023 17:04

Mine all end in dee, which is a Nene (Nen) valley accent Smile

Can corroborate this for Northampton!

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 11/05/2023 20:52

North East. I say ‘day’ at the end of each one and a 3 syllable ‘Wed-ens-day’. I used to struggle to spell Wednesday as couldn’t understand why it has ‘nes’ in the middle but is said ‘ens’.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/05/2023 20:58

Mun-day
Chews-day
Whens-day
Furze-day
Fri-day
Sat-tur-day
Sun-day

Bristolian

midnightblue12 · 11/05/2023 21:03

I'm with you OP! I don't say the full day either 🤷🏼‍♀️
North west England!
I think it's northern thing to shorten words isn't it?

Tinytigertail · 11/05/2023 21:11
