I went to see a psychic

I went being extremely skeptical and thinking that I was going to hear many generalised things that could apply to anyone's life - however I was told lots of very specific and detailed things that no one would know.

Has anyone else been to one?

Not yet but I’d love to. Just need the spare cash. What did they tell you? What was it all like?

ehb102 · 10/05/2023 22:15

I have been to a couple. Some have seen possibilities, moments where things could have gone either way. Nothing massively helpful. One was the real deal and was a proper medium. Those kinds are super rare. I go every year with a friend. She takes a lot of spiritual guidance from it. I find it amusing, but when there is a point that a prediction might come true it usually doesn't.

I booked to see someone but the appointment was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Ba boom tish!

yes, OP, I had an experience 20+ years ago which was impressive. I tried again with others but quickly realised there's probably about 3 people in the world with that skill.

Flowertight · 10/05/2023 22:21

No. No-one else has been to one.

of course they have. They need fools to pay their bills don’t they

WestOfWestminster · 10/05/2023 22:22

Did you have to book in advance or did they know you were coming?

InFlagrante · 10/05/2023 22:36

You’ll have had the usual combination of cold reading, lucky guesses, and inaccurate stuff you’ve chosen to overlook.

VenusClapTrap · 10/05/2023 22:38

A couple of times in my youth. They didn’t really get anything right.

mopeymouse · 10/05/2023 22:39

She told me things about my son that she just couldn't possibly know. Very very specific details. Also my mother was with me and she said 'You've been having regular visits to the hospital for treatment' - and yes, my mum has been going to hospital twice a week for 4 months for treatment ....

Was she local and did she get names in advance?

callmemavis · 10/05/2023 22:47

More fool you

Beignet · 10/05/2023 22:48

I was a sceptic but went to one years and years ago as there was one booked to visit my friends mums house. One person had dropped out and they encouraged me to have a reading.

She was incredibly good - seemed to know my secrets. Said names. Everything she said has so far come true. She even said things about scenarios about dh ( who I met years later). When these things happen, I think, " oh, the medium said that would happen"

I wish I had taken a recording of all the things she had said.

XelaM · 10/05/2023 22:50

Only two I have met who were absolutely brilliant. One was in my local town in Germany, but she didn't claim yo be a medium or have special powers- she was just very accurate at reading cards. She was always absolutely spot-on with all her predictions and I used to go every year in December to get a reading for the upcoming year. Unfortunately, she moved and is no longer contactable.

Th other really brilliant psychic gave phone readings and I found her via a website where I must have tried over 100 different psychics, but she was the only one who was accurate. Always spot on with predictions and she had the most amazing soothing voice. She was like my therapist. She had some health issues and suddenly left the site and I haven't been able to find her since :(

Pahpahpotato · 10/05/2023 22:51

Personally I think they’re absolute con artists who talk utter shite, so I’ve never seen one myself but my mum did, as a very young woman (18 or so I believe). She was told she would have a healthy daughter, then a stillborn son and many miscarriages, and no more living children.
She had six children, no miscarriages and her first born was a son…
Sums it up for me really. Also what a fucking witch to put the fear of that awful prediction into my mother.

XelaM · 10/05/2023 22:51

If anyone has any genuinely good psychic recommendations- I am all ears as almost all of them are just crooks

Tortiemiaw · 10/05/2023 22:53

Went to one quite recently. Quite a well known one. Was told a lot of stuff that would have been hard to make up and was asked a very specific question that genuinely shocked me. I'm still a hit sceptical hut a lot less so!

QueenOfHiraeth · 10/05/2023 22:54

I saw someone years ago who gave information about family history that she couldn't have guessed or cold read from me (I didn't know and had to investigate to confirm it).

She also told me something I was to ask an older relative about which actually got them to talk about a very painful incident in their life and gave them great relief

Whoknowswhatanymore · 10/05/2023 22:57

My mum went to one about a year after my dad died. She told her some amazing facts that she couldn’t have possibly known and she also recorded it and gave mum a copy to keep. We are a very close knit family and she couldn’t have got the info from anywhere other than my dad himself! Was very emotional. You either believe or you don’t but please don’t diss people or leave unnecessary comments if you don’t concur. Thanks.

ReginaPerrin · 10/05/2023 22:58

I went to several many years ago - none of them were in any way specific or accurate. I genuinely believe that if they strike lucky with the first guess, people get reeled in and start to give them more info without even realising it. I would never knock anyone for going to a psychic - I’d love to think I could hear from my much missed loved ones - but they’re not genuine. Watching various episodes of Derren Brown has shown how easy it is to fool people.

How old is your Mum?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 10/05/2023 23:01

I haven't ever consulted one, but I do have a very close friend who considers herself to be psychic. She works in regular job and doesn't ever charge people for the psychic stuff, so it definitely isn't a scam... she really believes it.

The jury's out for me. I'm naturally very sceptical, but she is certainly incredibly good at reading people and she seems to connect on another level with people.

Sometimes, I think she is just very perceptive and emotionally intelligent, and that the things she knows because of her "psychic" powers are primarily the result of excellent observation skills and accurate sense-making of what she observes. Other times, I wonder if there is genuinely something more to it.

I don't doubt her own beliefs about how she experiences the world, and ultimately, who am I to say that she doesn't see things that I don't....I have no way of knowing!

SLagoon · 10/05/2023 23:08

What else did they tell you?

Toomanylatenightprogs · 10/05/2023 23:10

I went to see a Medium a few weeks after DH died.
I only gave her my first name ( common enough name) When she asked where I was coming from for directions I told her a town I was driving through, not where I lived. …I didn’t even drive my own car there, borrowed dc car. I didn’t tell her why I wanted a reading.
So there was no information she could have looked up online. I knew not to nod, mouth names at her, give her bits of information or jump in to say you’re right. I just let her talk.
She gave me at least 20 -25 facts, all accurate. No inaccurate information.
She gave me at least 7 names. Only one she struggled with she was saying the first sound and I couldn’t think of anyone with that initial sound, until I thought of a friend who lived overseas and just as I said “Susan?” She said no, your dog, what’s your dog’s name? ( Sammy)
Absolutely no way she could know any of it. And everything apart from Susan/Sammy was definite — “your mother June is here “ not a lady is here Jill? jan? Julie?
Glad you had a good reading OP.

This is exactly why people are vocal about cold reading and ‘psychics’, because of their disgusting, exploitative preying on grieving, vulnerable people.
