I went to see a psychic

I went being extremely skeptical and thinking that I was going to hear many generalised things that could apply to anyone's life - however I was told lots of very specific and detailed things that no one would know.

Has anyone else been to one?

I went to see one a year ago. I gave her a false name as I did not want her to know me at all. She sat looking at me quietly for a few moments and I was astounded at what she told me. She immediately picked up on something that she could never have known. She was amazing.

EmmaEmerald · 10/05/2023 23:27

Regina "I genuinely believe that if they strike lucky with the first guess, people get reeled in and start to give them more info without even realising it."

I was under strict orders to keep quiet while she delivered her monologue about my past, present, and future 😂 Some of it was hard to swallow but she was right.

I wasn't looking for a dead loved one, but future predictions.

My mum and her friend went to see one of those 'Gypsy Rose Lee' type mediums when they were on holiday in Hastings many, many years ago. They both crossed her palm with silver (as the saying goes), and she then did a palm reading for my mum. Apparently it was generic stuff that could have been about anybody - you'll meet a tall dark stranger and all that. Then she looked at the friend's palm, paused a while, and then said that she couldn't do a reading, and gave her the money back. Freaked my mum and her friend right out, because they believed that this woman saw something awful in the future that she didn't want to tell her.

Yes I saw one about ten years ago, and like you, she told me things she couldn't possibly have known or found out through anyone. Specific details about relationships between family members and things in my life that I hadn't shared with anyone. I can't remember now if she predicted any future events but I do remember enjoying the experience of someone really seeing me.

How cruel!

I won tickets to see a psychic show once. I took a couple of friends who were both pretty sceptical. Unsurprisingly enough the so called medium had a message for almost everyone in the room but us! It was all pretty generic stuff but it was interesting to watch how she sucked in the more vulnerable, including telling one woman who had multiple pregnancy losses that she would be pregnant soon. I knew the woman, she never did have a child. So I am firmly in the cruel money making scam camp.

I went to see one a few years ago & he got my living arrangements down to a tee, plus that of my ex!!! Plus the last couple of years of us living together!!
He also said my brother was looking over me, I dont have a brother!!! I do have a younger sister though!! The next time I saw my mum & told her about my visit to a phsycic/medium, she said shed had a miscarrage before having me but didnt know the sex!! I didnt give a name as a friend booked for 4 of us under her name, as shed been to see him before!! About 3-4 years later, I took 2 friends of mine to see him & booked under my name, but I didnt have a reading, he got so much right for both of them too!!

My psychic also mentioned a really random town, which meant nothing until I got home and thought about it. Then it became clear. That shook me a bit too. Absolutely no reason to mention it.

BirdChirp · 11/05/2023 07:57

I've been to see lots over the years. Each time I'd go as a friend or relative swore this one was 'amazing' and told them such accurate things. What I really wanted to hear was that I would meet someone great and get married, so was looking to feel better.

All of them, without fail, were absolutely inaccurate. Some just spewed nonsense, others tried to lead me into giving direction (I would always sit silently). Some would say that because I wasn't 'open' to it they couldn't do a proper reading i.e. I wasn't giving them any clues.

I haven't been to see one now for about 20 years. My mum still goes and irritates the life out of me when she confides the nonsense she has been told (and believes). It impacts her life and relationships.

I went to a tarot reader about 15 years ago, she was good, and I was skeptical.
She was in the Peterborough area and was recommended to me.
I am just wondering if anyone knows of any one in that area now? I wouldn't mind going again,
I think the lady would be gone now.

CurlewKate · 11/05/2023 08:48

Before anyone goes to a psychic, they should watch Derren Brown. He'll show you how they do it-how they can tell you things "they couldn't possibly have known."

This always gets mentioned

I love him but there is the occasional person who isn't doing cold reading shit, and isn't charging. I don't mean mediums, no experience of those, but psychics.

HermioneWeasley · 11/05/2023 10:56

No so called psychic or clairvoyant has ever been able to perform a feat which can’t be replicated by someone who claims no such abilities. There’s a $1m prize for anyone who can. I feel like at least one of these genuine psychics would fancy $1m.

'Extremely skeptical' people don't go to 'psychics' [sic].

JoanThursday1972 · 11/05/2023 11:02

I went to see one once, about 10 years ago with my friend, but not the sort where you want to make contact with dead people, but just a reading. She seemed impressive but everything she said would happen, didn't. She also talked at length about my current relationship with my dad who was dead! She does events to this day and whenever I see it advertised I tell people not to waste their money.

Tortiemiaw · 11/05/2023 11:03

I watch Derren Brown a lot and totally get what he says - and was really sceptical, but seriously, a town - think John O Groats for example, mentioned when you have always lived in or near Hull, say, suddenly being mentioned. I had no idea of how this could be in any way relative, but went home, looked stuff up and then realised how basically obvious (to only me) it was. It did make me wonder!

AsphaltGirl · 11/05/2023 11:05

Beignet · 10/05/2023 22:48

I was a sceptic but went to one years and years ago as there was one booked to visit my friends mums house. One person had dropped out and they encouraged me to have a reading.

She was incredibly good - seemed to know my secrets. Said names. Everything she said has so far come true. She even said things about scenarios about dh ( who I met years later). When these things happen, I think, " oh, the medium said that would happen"

I wish I had taken a recording of all the things she had said.

If you had taken a recording, you would be astonished at how different it is from how you remember it now.

There is NO WAY the Psychic Could Have known! | Skeptical Inquirer

Mark Edward and I hear this statement so often that I’m going write an article about it. “There is NO WAY the psychic could have known that!” With a lot of emphasis on the “NO WAY” part. These are the statements that usually follow that first statement...

I was extremely sceptical and I didn’t go willingly, I was bought a tarot card reading as a birthday present and went in a small group of friends. The lady knew specific things about me that I have never told anyone about and they weren’t generic things that could have related to anyone. Still don’t know how she knew.

Anaemiafog · 11/05/2023 11:13

I was stood outside a shop recently waiting for DH. A strange guy approached me saying, "Hi, how are you? I haven't seen you in ages but you've been in hospital haven't you."
It was a city I'd never been in before. Sounds impressive on the surface but I have an NJ that clearly that needs to be fitted in hospital. His next comment as I walked away was to ask for money. Look up cold reading.

Seen two, one in a foreign country, no charge.

Tortiemiaw · 11/05/2023 11:26

Fair enough, but it was very odd and totally unrelated to anything I have ever spoken about to anyone. I guess we'll never know!

CurlewKate · 11/05/2023 12:30

@EmmaEmerald "

Why does that prove they weren't cold reading?

Sorry, really tired today

there wasn't anything to go on for a cold reading. Especially when you've been told to sit down, keep quiet and they have their eyes closed while they monologue.

maybe they have a whole selection of learned monologues but it's odd that they are specific!
