Is this language acceptable in a school?

Just need some perspective as I'm not from Englad originally.

DD (5) in Reception had an international week at school. One of the days they had to come dressed in their country's national dress or flag etc. DD's dad is English but I thought DD can wear something that's related to my country. I didn't have a national dress and quite frankly I didn't bother doing much about it as I was busy and didn't want to buy (once again) something she'll wear once or twice.

On the morning she went to school I dressed DD in clothes that represented the 3 colours of my national flag. She looked lovely and I was pleased with my creativity.

DD came back from school and I asked her what did her teacher think of her costume, she said the teacher said she wasn't fancy! I said what did she mean? She said: 'The teacher said I had to go in the back row as my costume wasn't fancy'. Well, it turned out the teacher was trying to take a picture of the class and DD was standing in the front, so she asked her and other kids (who weren't 'fancy') to go at the back so that the 'fancy' costumes were in the front. It all made sense when I saw the picture on Tapestry.

But then I'm thinking is this an appropriate language to use with 4 and 5 year olds? 🤔 . To make little kids feel like they are not appreciated as much because they don't have a 'fancy' costume? It's not our case thankfully, but what if some parents can't afford a 'fancy' costume. I found the language and comparing of the costumes a bit odd but maybe that's because I'm not English?

(All for a picture on Tapestry).

It's not the first time when a parent finds her choice of language a bit inappropriate.

DD will be moving to a independent school from Year1.

Let's hope they don't have to dress up for anything...

JaffavsCookie · 11/05/2023 21:36

Yes, don’t assume they won’t use similar language

SarahDippity · 11/05/2023 21:36

I think some people are being very rude to the OP for asking a question about ambiguous language. Especially since she says she is not English.

And? You think private school teachers don't use the word fancy when describing something nice someone is wearing?
I have no idea what relevance moving to private school is OP. But if you think this sort of stuff doesn't happen there, you're in for a wild and expensive ride.

Maddy70 · 11/05/2023 21:39

She would have had the kids in full on fancy dress at the front for the pictures you're making too much of this

It doesn't really matter if she's not English tbh. A bunch of kids dress up for a culture event, and the teacher asks those with the fancy outfits to stand at the front. The OP has a problem with the word fancy but wouldn't have a problem with the word fancy dress. What 5 year old will know the difference?
The OP is so upset about this they've made a thread on Mumsnet and has now proclaimed their child is moving to an independent school...I'm not sure what relevance this has or what it will solve?

EllandRd · 11/05/2023 21:40

Nothing wrong with what the teacher said.

Oh my… state or private, the PP’s point still stands. It’s still considered primary ages. You are frankly, ridiculous!!

As others have said, the teacher clearly said fancy dress. Next time, make an effort and don’t moan. Your life must be so uneventful for you to consider this even a thing.

Unless she shouted 'get to the back you unfancy fuckers' then I think you're being ridiculous.

😂😂😂😂😂

greenspaces4peace · 11/05/2023 21:53

@Moreoften oh my! they do fancy dress, historic costumes, and all sorts of dress up days at my grand daughters independent :(, be prepared to loosen those purse strings for expectations of "proper" attire...hint face paint or pined on flag won't do.

Littledogball · 11/05/2023 21:54

You'll be spending more than £35 for special days then!!

LynetteScavo · 11/05/2023 21:55

"DD will be moving to a independent school from Year1."

Jolly good. The teachers will still speak English (if you're still in the UK), use words like fancy dress, you and can bet the fanciest children will be put forward in any photo. You'll need to up your costume game.

Completely missing the point of thread but I read this comment several hours ago and I’m still chuckling at it now
unfancy fuckers🤣🤣

Back to the point- I agree with others, think it’s highly likely the teacher said fancy dress and even if not - meh, not sure I’d care.

I did think this too, but didn't want to say. OP, Your child will likely be the only one without that £35 cultural dress at an independent. Be prepared for endless mufti days and requests for cash for a different charity every week. Not to mention the competition that is world book Day. It's pretty tacky to have a pre bought costume. Homemade is the expectation mostly.

DD will be moving to a independent school from Year1.

Good plan. They will be experienced at managing parents.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/05/2023 22:03

Anyone else wanting a fondant fancy?

savoycabbage · 11/05/2023 22:06

I'm totally imagining the teacher pushing the unfancy fuckers to the back with a cattle prod.

You are dooooomed if you already can't be arsed with dressing up days when she's still in EYFS. Fifty more to go before year six.

Fandabedodgy · 11/05/2023 22:14

How would you feel if you had spent ages looking for fancy dress for your child, only for them to be shoved in the back and some kid in a plain t-shirt took up the front of the pic?

😳 I bet you are on the PTA

Nope. I personally wouldn't care if that happened to my child but I was just trying to get OP to see if from a other perspective. If she's upset the word fancy was used, I can't imagine she'd be all that happy if her child was in fancy dress and didn't get put to the front. I personally wouldn't take offence with anything the OP has described happened.

perfectimperfect · 11/05/2023 22:25

I'm not sure why you've mentioned about her moving to independent in year 1 OP...

DueyCheatemAndHow · 11/05/2023 22:28

So you're pissed off that other kids - whose parents made more of an effort - stood at the front of a photo?

Who'd be a teacher? Seriously, who?

Avocadont77 · 11/05/2023 22:31

Yes to the fondant fancy!

Tellmeimcrazy · 11/05/2023 23:02

I still think whether she said "fancy dress" or "fancy" is just semantics. The child shouldn't have been targeted.

AliceMcK · 11/05/2023 23:19

HotPenguin · 11/05/2023 15:25

The teacher didn't realise your child was dressed in the colours of a national flag. She thought she was in normal clothes.

In that case the teacher completely failed at their job given the assignment was to dress in the countries national dress or flag. The OP dressed her child in her national flag colours!
