Drinking when 2 year old is in bed

DP is on holiday with friends so it’s just me and DS. I have had 3 glasses of wine tonight and I feel “happy” but not drunk if you know what I mean. DH rang earlier and was shocked that I have drunk 3 glasses of wine. I would certainly be capable to react if anything were to go wrong, emergency etc. He’s made me feel like a really bad mum. Just thought I’d get some opinions. If I am in the wrong I won’t do it again.

So do people really not drink when they have kids? Does one of you drink and the other abstain?
What's the difference being on your own or with another who is equally drinking?

CurlewKate · 06/05/2023 00:02

Mm

IcedCoffee1 · 06/05/2023 00:15

He finally text me back. He said I’m irresponsible because “what kind of mother gets drunk in front of their child” bearing in mind I didn’t have my first glass until he was asleep and I’m not drunk. He said I’m putting DS at risk🤷🏻‍♀️

Don’t reply. He clearly wants an argument.

Personally one of us is always sober when we have the kids with us (not that either of are big drinkers, husband is essentially teetotal nowadays anyway). And neither of us would be drunk around the kids.

I wouldn't drink when I was in sole charge of the kids as I don't like feeling impaired in any way when looking after them or for them to notice any altered behaviour from alcohol. But that's just a personal thing and I think everyone's lines in the sand are different.

I've never seen my parents even tipsy but I remember being quite anxious as a child when a friend's parent was tipsy and their behaviour changed and I found it unsettling, so I guess that's maybe partly why.

AllOrNothingSituation · 06/05/2023 00:34

Outside of London, being able to drive is not only useful but vital in more rural areas, so no it isn’t a “MN thing” being surprised people can’t drive, it’s the reality outside of your central London bubble.

TomatoSandwiches · 06/05/2023 00:41

I'd have to text back that he sounds like he needs a drink to calm down.

so what? what is your point? there is fuck all need to scoff at "grown adults not driving" get out of your own bubble and accept that not all of us choose to live in the arse end of nowhere and have no need to drive its not "surprising" unless you live a bubble yourself and dont realise some people have no need to drive, and no ive never experienced judgement about it outside of MN however there are frequent posts on here from people who see not driving as some kind of failure in life.

i didnt say you did, i responded to the faux shock from the poster mocking grown adults that dont drive. you then decided to attack me for saying i live in london so dont need to drive, theres only one stupid cunt here so fuck off and stop quoting me you sad loser.

WellPlaced · 06/05/2023 01:07

He sounds like a complete arse

CallieQ · 06/05/2023 01:07

Wow somehow exDH and I managed to raise three boys to adulthood with no major mishaps and most weekends we both drank around 3 glasses of wine (sometimes more) at the same time!! What is it with parents these days

CallieQ · 06/05/2023 01:08

Calm down everyone

AllOrNothingSituation · 06/05/2023 01:10

never seen such anger over people not driving like there is on MN 😂

LaviniasBigBloomers · 06/05/2023 01:17

It's well past 1am and DH and I are a bit pissed. I mean, we live in a city, are surrounded by neighbours, taxis and also ambulances, if we need them. Everything else is a a red herring really. If he'd have a drink sitting in the house with you then he's an absolute dick suggesting you can't have a wine when you're on your own.

MaydinEssex · 06/05/2023 01:44

It's absolutely fine, nothing wrong in a few glasses of wine to relax. It's not like you went on a bender

Jansetten · 06/05/2023 01:51

I mean we all go to sleep and are unconscious when our children are also asleep?? Is that not somewhat similar to having three glasses of wine, if an emergency were to happen and you’d be waken up you’d be drowsy and also somewhat impaired by sleep.

Namechanger355 · 06/05/2023 01:54

I regularly have 1 glass of wine

2 at a stretch but I’d feel tipsy

personally I can’t have 3 without being really drunk so wouldn’t do that

dwightschrutebeets · 06/05/2023 02:04

Jesus Christ everyone is so OTT

Atovell · 06/05/2023 02:06

The fact you are writing for clarification probably proves you’re ok. Don’t have any more though…you’ve had a child not an aneurysm

I wouldn't (and don't). Don't think it's responsible to be over the drink drive limit in terms of cognition not driving.
