My celebrity boss is a lunatic I'm losing the plot

My boss is a celebrity in our industry. Think: 100s of 1000s of social media followers, his own podcast...and all the ego that goes with that.

He is also rude (telling people their ideas are fucking shit), a huge micromanager and a bully. Everyone at work says this, not just me. His adoring fans don't see this side of him.

When I took the job he wasn't my boss. He fired my boss publicly saying he wasn't up to the job and now I have to work much more closely with the celebrity boss. My stress and anxiety are through the roof. I am criticised for everything and publicly. Literally not one thing is right (even obvious achievements). I'm mocked and ridiculed. I'm very experienced and well paid and in my 40s. I'm good at my job.

I'm obviously looking for a new job.

Spoke to HR who just sighed and said he is like that. He owns the company.

How do I cope. I feel on the edge of a breakdown. I also have to manage a team who he undermines me in front of.

Literally every hour is miserable and terrifying.

I can't do anything legally or practically. I need emotional coping tips because I am a wreck. I worry what this is doing to my physical as well as mental health.

Hey @squillionth and all.

I am.

I was such a mess yesterday my friend ended up driving over, taking me to hers, feeding me, listening to me rant and I stayed at hers.

Today I've been working on the website for my consultancy business. It's looking good!

My confidence is coming back already.

On Tuesday I am launching my new consultancy business on social media!!!

I'll feel better when they've paid me lol.

The thing i mentioned that I thought might happen on Friday didn't happen....

But if I hear of anything on the grapevine I'll let you know.

I am here reading and cheering you on. Great about the website!

Fallenangelofthenorth · 02/07/2023 02:58

Another cheerleader here! Really pleased for you and I'm sure you'll be successful in whatever you do, as even when you were on your knees with this job, you were still getting industry recognition. I wish you the best of luck!

Grumpusaurus · 02/07/2023 03:40

Bless you OP, I am glad you left because the toll on your mental and physical health sounded horrendous. Wishing you all the success for your own business.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 02/07/2023 08:14

Good for you, OP - I hope the launch goes really well.

Niceseasidetown

I was so delighted when I read:
"I am launching my new consultancy business on social media!!!"

I am so proud of you!

Well done!

You are a big Achiever! A true Survivor! Remember, you still deserve compensation for constructive dismissal or whatever the legal term may be. Please investigate, my DD was compensated even though she resigned and she did not have the length of bullying you suffered.

Wishing you a well-deserved highly successful future with much happiness. I know I shall not forget you.

God bless you. Elle 💐

Thank you everyone!!

Have l missed much?
Have you named names yet?? Is it just me wondering ?
Can you launch then squeal? Anonymously of course!
Can you drop hints ? Is that even legal?
I'm invested now, will your new venture be relevant to a mumsnetter?

I think that, given the title of the thread, OP has every right to never say who it is. A closed mouth gathers no lawsuits.

Bullies never stop, though, unless someone stands up to them. He'll probably bully every person after her too. Why should workplace bullying victims be lawsuited?

Because she was a contractor, not an employee, unions and employment law won't help her, it's going to be expensive, and it could cause her years of stress she doesn't need, while trying to set up a new business that depends on reputation?

It's all well and going standing up and doing the right thing, but the OP has nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Agapornis · 03/07/2023 02:31

*well and good

a) OP was not employed. She would need to take legal action to prove she was an employee not a contractor.
b) In the absence of any discrimination on grounds of a protected characteristic, OP needs 2 years service to bring a claim for constructive dismissal. She has 4 (?) months?

That's a perfect response! Well said!

Anyone watching just to find out who this man is should be ashamed of themselves.

This forum began because a girl was in immeasurable distress and urgently needed support. Despite the most shameful treatment at the hands of a Boss with no scruples or conscience, she remained dignified and kept the highest ethical standards.

She has triumphed and held her head high never dropping her standards even in the worst of times. She has acted graciously and with high moral standards. She deserves to do very well in her next career move as CEO of her own Consultancy Business. With her impeccable qualities, demonstrated here, she deserves to achieve the highest success.

I think I can safely say, those of us who have been beside her throughout this are so glad she has survived and wish her the very best for her future. As I mentioned before, I shall not forget her, and I think Niceseasidetown is a lady many of us here shall not forget.

Thanks. I must have missed that. I wonder if there's any redress she has a right to? The cases I knew seemed unlikely to be eligible but won. But things may have changed since.

SaveMeFromForearms · 03/07/2023 12:00

I would love to follow your new business, but understand you can't have it linked to this thread. What a shame!

Nope. It was a business to business relationship (unless proven otherwise) so no employment law applies (and 4 months wouldn’t be enough to qualify for non-discriminatory issues).
