What fun or nice thing have you done this weekend that hadn't cost much money?

Many of us need to find free or very cheap things to do these days so I thought we could share some here.

We have done a bike ride and a walk to see some beautiful bluebells in woods.
We had a movie night last night and might have another one tonight if the dc can decide on a film.

Went for a walk this morning (I do almost every day). At one of the local ponds saw the first moorhen chicks of the year. Small piece of wood floating in the pond, two of the three chicks tried to stand on it and kept falling off. One swam off with parent, other joined later.

Cuddled my 7 week old grandson - priceless.

Cakeandslippers · 30/04/2023 19:52

Went to the local community farm (free) and the park today. Yesterday dh put the kids lunch in his bag and they had it as a picnic at the park then went to the library.

MayDayMay · 30/04/2023 19:52

Took my DM who has advanced dementia and lives in a nursing home to a beautiful NT place, it costs £2. I’m not exaggerating it was the highlight of her year so far.

ThreeRingCircus · 30/04/2023 19:52

Took DDs to the park. They played and I sat on a bench with DH and we shared a thermos of tea. It was lovely.

We also did a film night last night. We just had supermarket pizzas cooked at home rather than a takeaway and watched a film on Netflix but it was great.

I've been enjoying a book. In fact, I read some of the book in a bath with a flagrant disregard for the effects of the humidity on the pages, like a goddamned rock star.

Iris1976 · 30/04/2023 19:54

Ended up at the local river bank on the way to the park, which sounds nice but is a bit of a dump but DD likes it,skimmed stones, competition who could throw the furthest across the river, made a kind of grabber fishing rod where I had to chuck leaves in for DD to fish out, ended up being there 2.5 hrs.

I dyed my daughters hair and it looks great.

Usually interaction around her hair is focussed on making her brush (I’m a terrible mum like that) it so it was nice to have grooming time that we both enjoyed

We went to see Dippy the dinosaur and looked round the rest of the museum where he is currently being exhibited and then walked round Coventry cathedral. All free, although paid a small donation to the museum. Then bought curry from CostCo (£9.99 for 4 of us) and heated it up with some rice as a cheaper alternative to a takeaway.

DanceBeneathADiamondSky · 30/04/2023 20:03

Walk in the woods with DH and ds yesterday while DD was at a bday party. Didn't even need coats! The warmer weather helps a lot

AlltheFs · 30/04/2023 20:03

We had lunch in the garden room DH uses as an office (also has a sofa and TV) it is in a bit of our garden that we don’t often use (because it needs loads of work-our garden is on several levels)-it overlooks a huge field of sheep with lambs and the cherry tree we thought was dead was full of blossom. It was gorgeous!

I also took my retired pony out for a quick walk ride in beautiful countryside as she was looking well. Technically not free though as she costs a billion pounds to keep 🙈 but didn’t cost me money today as such.

Crunchymum · 30/04/2023 20:06

Library and long canal walk yesterday (although we did spend on coffees and ice creams)

Local woods today, took a picnic from home.

CMOTDibbler · 30/04/2023 20:07

I volunteered at a sporting event which I got free coffee, cake and a bacon bap for doing, and had a good time doing it and a laugh with some great women

Snoopyandthemuppets · 30/04/2023 20:13

I am currently injured with a broken foot after a trip to A and E today. Did it a week ago and wasn’t getting any better. Arrived at the hospital and in and out including x rays, support and crutches in an hour. Absolutely amazing.

Have come back and listened to cabin pressure podcasts which have cheered me up. It’s raining here so not much I can do but I have been made a decent cup of tea and am very glad my bedroom is so beautifully neat and tidy

tallsmallmum · 30/04/2023 20:18

bounced on our trampoline with my very light 10yo we held hands and laughed loads and it was the laugh I needed

Grumpi · 30/04/2023 20:27

One thing I like to do, which works well with my primary kids is drive to one of the “nice” high streets near me and do the charity shops. The village has a duck pond and it’s lovely to walk along, about a 15 min stroll either way.
Park at one end, do the charity shops and let them look at all the toot and toys, up to the duck pond, play for a bit, wander back down, grab a cake from the bakery.

It can be free if you don’t buy anything but I usually let the kids have a cheapy toy for a couple quid each and then couple quid on cakes.

It’s a lovely way to spend an hour or two if you have a nice local village (gentrified) or high street.

I realise it’s nothing new, but my kids enjoy sifting through the random charity stuff and everyone is always chatty

SquirrelFan · 30/04/2023 20:28

Did a youtube yoga video
Went to the farmers' market (that cost money but we had to buy some veggies anyway)
Had friends over for a glass of wine in garden (okay, that cost wine money)
Stood in the garden and listened to the bees hum
Danced in the kitchen

We went to a Bioblitz yesterday, it's an event where everyone gets involved to do a snap survey of all the wildlife in an area. This one was at a beautiful university campus that's managed really well for wildlife. DS1 and I went on a wildflower walk, DS2 (nearly 8) really wanted to do pond dipping at the same time, and the lovely students running it let him go with them unaccompanied, then we reunited and caught some bugs for the incrediblynerdy knowledgeable students to identify. All free, except for buying some amazingly good cake.

Seahorse87 · 30/04/2023 20:36

If you aren’t too far from the countryside a drive out to see the baby lambs etc in the fields in great at the moment!

Spent 30mins jumping in puddles in a car park yesterday (wish we’d brought wellies lol 🙈)

Watering the plants in our garden is a big hit for our 1 year old and good for times when mummy is tired and doesn’t want to go too far 😊

caringcarer · 30/04/2023 20:39

Went to watch D's play in a cricket festival. Cost nothing except picnic lunch and coffees from the clubhouse.

crackofdoom · 30/04/2023 20:39

We're going to a May Day event tomorrow. There are a lot of weird and wonderful May celebrations down here- you could go to a dozen if you had the energy.

Temporaryname158 · 30/04/2023 20:41

@FourTeaFallOut i love that! Living on the edge whilst also making me laugh!

GeraltsBathtub · 30/04/2023 20:41

Put food out for the birds in the garden and sat out watching them eat it.
Started some seeds off inside - busy Lizzies (pack says £1 on it from wilko) and some tomatoes.

ichundich · 30/04/2023 20:45

Planted the plants that I'd grown from seeds earlier this year in the garden.

MyMachineAndMe · 30/04/2023 20:54

Went to my sister's house and sat in her garden for a while.

Sat in my own garden listening to some music.
