What do you like about the UK?

I am British bit have lived abroad for 15 years.

I miss the British sense of humour. When I make jokes in my country of residence people look at me like I have two heads.

I miss the choice in the supermarkets. Different flavours of the same product, different products at Easter/ Christmas and not just exactly the same as last year and each and every year before that.

I miss the rich history of the country, and the traditions that I hope are being upheld (Guy Fawkes night was always my favourite).

I am feeling really homesick tonight. Indulge me.

Roast dinner
Weather - yes I don’t like it baking hot
Easter egg hunt
Where are you living?

Letsgetthisteapartystarted · 28/04/2023 21:27

A perfectly made cup of tea and a good (not dry, stale or heavy) scone.

Letsgetthisteapartystarted · 28/04/2023 21:28

The landscape. When visiting somewhere like New Mexico, Portugal or Australia’s red centre, I realise how beautiful our countryside is.

secretmumoffour · 28/04/2023 21:28

The UK? My grandparents came here 80 years ago from Ireland.... who would have thought with this government I would seriously be looking at going back?! Even to further overseas, if I didn't have elderly relatives here.... absolutely nothing. Sorry, but the UK is a joke right now. I had a conversation with my parents earlier... there are 48K vacancies for NHS staff.... I'm fully qualified..... there's THREE in my area advertised! One parent said "the rest private companies" so I replied yeah, and if I'm going to work for a private company I may as-well emigrate.... if nothing but for workers rights seens as we are going back to the 18th century.... for all the humour and jokes in the world this place just isn't worth it anymore.
Shortages of everything.... but not for brexit 🙄.....

I’m from elsewhere, and have lived in the U.K. for almost ten years.

I love British queuing. No cutting in front, and everyone gets their turn.

love how brits really appreciate green spaces and gardens.

love how brits appreciate history, even down to the little blue plaques on buildings of historic interest.

British desserts are the best, especially basic “nursery” desserts like Eton mess, bread and butter pudding etc

OP asked what you like 🤷🏻‍♀️

RocketIceLollie · 28/04/2023 21:32

The little things.

People saying thank you to the bus driver when they get off the bus.
The different accents.
Local radio call in's.
People waving thank you when you let a car through.
When everyone cheers when someone drops a glass in a pub.

Tailfeather · 28/04/2023 21:34

No dangerous insects, animals or fish.

I guess you haven’t travelled all over Portugal

Summerof76a · 28/04/2023 21:37

It's the most tolerant country in the world.

Only the last one is not exclusive to the UK in my experience 😆

British people are notoriously polite, but can actually be rude in a lot of cultures- not saying hello and goodbye when you enter a shop/restaurant/waiting room/ anywhere there are people.

Plus not making eye contact when saying cheers

@nationallampoons my point is absolutely nothing! It's going down the pan! Most people are looking to leave not come back

emmetgirl · 28/04/2023 21:37

All the different accents definitely. And the wonderful countryside and coastline

The UK is green - every time we came home from holiday my OH and I would both comment on how much we had missed it. At the moment the hedges are a joy with their spring yellow-green leaves; and the dandelions and cowslips on the verges are wonderful.

My 16 year old DD on returning from a 3 week Australia sports trip said how wonderful it was to see old buildings (churches, barns, country houses, castles) on the coach home from the airport. It seemed a strange thing for a 16 year old to care about - I thought it was rather sweet.

OneFrenchEgg · 28/04/2023 21:46

Seriously, if I think about anywhere else I've spent a decent amount of time, or what I enjoy doing:

The West End
Free art galleries
Museums everywhere - love a mooch round a local museum
Country parks
BBC radio 4
The absolute weirdos that ring local radio stations /national stations

ForeverFantastic · 28/04/2023 21:48

As an non Brit living in the UK I love:

the seasons - winter was painful but spring is a delight. the flowers are so beautiful - snowdrops, daffodils, tulips and more

the ‘pub flowers’ - all the colourful hanging baskets of flowers outside the pubs in summer.

all the berries - raspberries, strawberries, blueberries delicious!

the polite British driving - I have to remind myself to drive more British and let people in. Didn’t know what people flashing their headlights meant to start with …

the chocolate is better than my home country

Fluffycloudsblusky · 28/04/2023 21:50

Crumpets
english theatre

but I wouldn’t go back to live unless I had to. The uk looks very tired at the moment and the NHs is an utter shambles. Makes me sad to see it

VioletladyGrantham · 28/04/2023 21:51

Cream teas, afternoon teas...decent tea bags! The New Forest ponies, the Shambles in York and the Cornish coastline.

Gtsr443 · 28/04/2023 21:52

Humour
The greatest bands in the world
Insanely beautiful diverse landscape
Love of football even when your team is shite
A decent cup of tea
Caffs - and I don't mean Starbucks corporate horrors - proper caffs
Windbreaks on pebble beaches

SpringOn · 28/04/2023 21:55

The buildings, the old ones, the castles, cathedrals and cities like Chester, Oxford, Durham and York. The Lake District and Northumberland. Christmas carols and mince pies

HighlandDays · 28/04/2023 21:56

Free museums
Queuing
Countryside
History
Animal Lovers

Twilightstarbright · 28/04/2023 21:58

It’s not perfect but it’s a largely tolerant place where DH and I can be in a mixed race marriage and not be hassled for it.

Our sense of occasion.
