I am British bit have lived abroad for 15 years.

I miss the British sense of humour. When I make jokes in my country of residence people look at me like I have two heads.

I miss the choice in the supermarkets. Different flavours of the same product, different products at Easter/ Christmas and not just exactly the same as last year and each and every year before that.

I miss the rich history of the country, and the traditions that I hope are being upheld (Guy Fawkes night was always my favourite).

I am feeling really homesick tonight. Indulge me.

Being left alone on public transport. God save us from “friendly” fellow passengers. I don’t want to talk to randoms on the bus.

Honestly they was 90% of what I missed when I moved abroad. That and decent cheddar for under $20.

milosmouse · 28/04/2023 22:00

Love this thread. I've become tired of the UK recently and rather bogged down with the current state of the place. This thread has reminded me that actually, despite our government, we do have a rather lovely country. We are more than just our government

Peakypolly · 28/04/2023 22:02

The theatre.
The weather.
The food scene.
Multiculturalism.
The National Parks.
The cities.
The humour.
English wine.
Festivals.
The four 'kingdoms' that make up the UK (not the Royal family though!)

Saschka · 28/04/2023 22:02

Oh, and the food. Foreign lands do not do British gastropub or Indian takeaways properly. They may have other amazing food, but sometimes you want sausage and mash, or a good biryani.

I was in Toronto, so lots of Indian expats, but not many of them were running takeaways in downtown.

ThreeRingCircus · 28/04/2023 22:05

Stunningly beautiful countryside.
Historic buildings.
Pomp and pageantry.
The British sense of humour.
Our music scene.
Mint sauce 😉

userxx · 28/04/2023 22:05

The weather.

I'm sure my British sense of humour is shining through.

SciFiFan · 28/04/2023 22:06

The fact that we’re quite a small country (or countries) so you don’t have to travel very far to be in the countryside, or at a beach, or in a big city. So much is right there on our doorstep.

userxx · 28/04/2023 22:11

baddecisions11 · 28/04/2023 21:38

NHS

Sarcasm, another British trait. What's not to love.

willowstar · 28/04/2023 22:12

The greenery and the variety of people and accents. I love to travel but the moment I land back in Heathrow I am delighted, delighted to hear British/British Asian accents and see the green unfold as we drive home. I actually love the UK and hope against all hope that we sort ourselves out and overthrow (vote out!) this government and somehow undo the damage of Brexit. All of my family live abroad and as increasingly disparaging of the UK. We are a joke on the international stage. I hope we can turn it around.

Other things I love...the seaside, friendliness of people, at least where I live, the old buildings and the varied landscape. I love how multicultural our society is.

willowstar · 28/04/2023 22:14

Oh and Waitrose 😊

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/04/2023 22:15

Edinburgh is awesome. Scottish scenery (ok, not so much the weather!)
At the moment.. not much else tbh!

ElbowsToes · 28/04/2023 22:17

The climate.
The history.
The beautiful landscape.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/04/2023 22:24

I love the national arguments: the scone Jam and cream debate.
sCONE or SCON

The pageantry for special occasions.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/04/2023 22:24

Well having had 20 months in Copenhagen here's what I missed

Good ready meals (had to do hell of a lot of cooking)

TK Maxx

Amazon - don't have it in Denmark, (however in all fairness they do have a much better variety of shops partly because of this)

Boots and good chemists in general- bit odd in Denmark as you can buy very little in terms of medication 'off the shelf'

Nice old pubs and gastro pubs

The ability to be nosey listening to other peoples conversations in pubs or toilets or shops etc ( unless they were speaking in English)

I do like the variety of scenery and towns in the UK- but that does require that you actually travel a fair bit I admit. One thing in Denmark is that there wasn't that much scenic variety and next to no hills

baddecisions11 · 28/04/2023 22:26

@userxx I wasn't being sarcastic ☺️

Crikeyalmighty · 28/04/2023 22:26

In balance though there were a lot of things there too that I liked more than the UK

universityhelp · 28/04/2023 22:41

Mostly all the things people have already said. Generally people are tolerant and pragmatic / down to earth.
The changeable weather - we all like to moan but it is nice to have a variety. I have realised recently that I do quite like those dreary summer days, when it is dull and can rain, and nothing much happens.
Variety of foods from different cultures, also sleazy cafes where you can get fried breakfasts.
Old fashioned buildings, crime dramas, old fashioned everything.
Gardens, hedges, and the pride people take in their front gardens.

threefiftysix · 28/04/2023 22:43

Where do you live OP?

threefiftysix · 28/04/2023 22:44

Sorry pressed send too quickly. I've just moved to the uk after doing 10 years in hk and when I felt homesick I would watch British dramas like line of duty!!

cloudjumper · 28/04/2023 22:44

Free museums
Bluebells
Beautiful countryside, so varied

Satsumastocking · 28/04/2023 22:46

secretmumoffour · 28/04/2023 21:28

The UK? My grandparents came here 80 years ago from Ireland.... who would have thought with this government I would seriously be looking at going back?! Even to further overseas, if I didn't have elderly relatives here.... absolutely nothing. Sorry, but the UK is a joke right now. I had a conversation with my parents earlier... there are 48K vacancies for NHS staff.... I'm fully qualified..... there's THREE in my area advertised! One parent said "the rest private companies" so I replied yeah, and if I'm going to work for a private company I may as-well emigrate.... if nothing but for workers rights seens as we are going back to the 18th century.... for all the humour and jokes in the world this place just isn't worth it anymore.
Shortages of everything.... but not for brexit 🙄.....

This.

But...also cream teas.

ElbowsToes · 28/04/2023 22:46

Watching Americans on Instagram stories, I am so grateful we don't have their extreme heat and cold.

MadeWithLoveAndALittleBitOfScience · 28/04/2023 22:47

I love:
Our sarcastic humour
Our tea
British coastlines
Roast dinners
Driving on the left side of the road
London
That we have many many accents
Proper fish n chips
NHS
As much as we have a fucked government. Is normal folk are generally good people and muck along well.

I also like that awkward tight lipped straight smile as if you're tucking in your lips that we do when when someone lets us cross the road or holds the door open. It's hard to explain but you'll all probably know what I'm in about.

MadeWithLoveAndALittleBitOfScience · 28/04/2023 22:50

The unanimous 'wheeeyyy' when a glass or plate is dropped in a pub or bar

Our ability to small talk. To anyone. Anytime.

MadeWithLoveAndALittleBitOfScience · 28/04/2023 22:53

Last one promise!

Ice cream vans!
