I am British bit have lived abroad for 15 years.

I miss the British sense of humour. When I make jokes in my country of residence people look at me like I have two heads.

I miss the choice in the supermarkets. Different flavours of the same product, different products at Easter/ Christmas and not just exactly the same as last year and each and every year before that.

I miss the rich history of the country, and the traditions that I hope are being upheld (Guy Fawkes night was always my favourite).

I am feeling really homesick tonight. Indulge me.

Light evenings in the summer.

We are generally tolerant and open minded nation. No one cares where I live that there are two mums for some kids, mixed race etc. no one cares about sexuality. It’s all very much accepted. If course it isn’t perfect.

our countryside is beautiful.

fantastic history and desire to preserve it. (The small museums in local towns are often wonderful

Alainlechat · 29/04/2023 06:42

Lack of pettiness
Less bureaucracy than a lot of other European countries
By and large less racist, although not perfect
Our sense of humour
Our deep history
Period houses
Our love of animals

wildinthecountry · 29/04/2023 06:43

I like being able to take my dog everywhere I go 😏.

Love this thread. I've become tired of the UK recently and rather bogged down with the current state of the place. This thread has reminded me that actually, despite our government, we do have a rather lovely country. We are more than just our government

This is lovely to read ❤️

The seasons… although I’m laughing as I type this as I’m desperate for this cold weather to bugger off!

pompomdaisy · 29/04/2023 08:12

Just chatting to hubby about where to head for couple of days in our camper. Shall we go to the east coast or west? Can't think where I've been that I could do that so easily.

VW campervans waving hello as we pass.

Hedgehogs and foxes in the garden and red kites flying over the house.

Heading down one street for an award winning curry, heading down another for an award winning Michelin meal.

English ancient towns and gardens, Scottish lochs, Welsh valleys.

Amazing music and dance scene

British humour

The list goes on.

Busybusybusy · 29/04/2023 08:15

The greenery, fish and chips, being a tourist in London

Summerof76a · 29/04/2023 08:22

The eternal spirit of optimism which burns in the heart of most Britons ... evidenced by campsites in July and August packed with people who booked them months ago believing that there would be endless days of sunshine ...

Baneofmyexistence · 29/04/2023 08:23

Cream teas.
Arguing over scon/scone, what a bread roll is called.
All the different accents and dialects.
The rich history.
When all the spring flowers pop up.
Going to the seaside for fish and chips.

yoshiblue · 29/04/2023 08:43

The people - I live up north and many people call each other 'love'
Our sense of humour
Variety of worldwide cuisine
Fish and Chips
Countryside and The National Trust
Second The Lake District, Northumberland
So much art, culture, music comes from the UK

I could go on all day. Aside from the Tories recking the country, I love living here and I'm optimistic for the future.

Lemondrizzlerain · 29/04/2023 08:50

After spending a lot of time abroad I was grateful when I got home for

  • British jokes and humour. The sarcasm, wit and Dad jokes
  • Safe weather
  • Safe from natural disasters (I was in a deadly earthquake abroad)
  • The politics. Less deadly than abroad.
  • Education, museums and culture.
  • Good tea and biscuits
  • Seasons
  • for such a tiny island we have an incredible landscape
  • Architecture and history.
  • Christmas
Lemondrizzlerain · 29/04/2023 08:54

Also, oddly... we seem to have a better understanding of ultra processed food and chemicals than other countries. So many times i thought "nope, not eating that!!"

Meals in vending machines, dodgy colourings and neon fizzy drinks. 😂

Crikeyalmighty · 29/04/2023 09:05

@alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 ha, ha - that's how I felt in Denmark! Add in a visit to Boots and TK Maxx and my bases would have been covered.

See, I would see the prevalence of camping as evidence of a widespread cultural masochism!

Butteredtoast55 · 29/04/2023 09:26

A bit hard to describe and I do think it's changing but I like the way things can be celebrated without going massively over the top. The commercialisation around everything is putting a stop to it, but there's nothing so lovely as a straightforward and simple British wedding, a brass band outside the shops at Christmas, a village fete, a carol service, a family bonfire night, festival celebration, BBQ or picnic.

I like the sense of humour, the changing seasons, the wildlife, democracy and the fact that most people are intrinsically thoughtful and want to help others.

MrBit · 29/04/2023 09:26

Our love of animals especially dogs
People always smiling at dogs expecting them to smile back maybe just me
The BBC
Our ability to say thank you several billion times in one transaction Grin
The Royal family and the pageantry
Country walks and pub lunches
The ability to laugh at ourselves
The diversity from moors marshes mountains and lakes
Our ability to have a picnic and the weather suddenly changes and still just sit there enjoying it
Ditto BBQing

Sudeko · 29/04/2023 09:33

Most things but especially the distinct seasons, the generosity of strangers, never-ending cultural opportunities, genuine diversity and that it is located on the right part of the world map to escape easily via several airports!

wrinkleintime · 29/04/2023 09:35

Not sure where you live OP but if you're missing the British supermarkets you might be disappointed these days. Britain is getting worse and you may well be better off wherever you are for the foreseeable future.

NoraLuka · 29/04/2023 09:36

Eccles cakes. I’ve tried making my own but they aren’t the same as the ones from Sayer’s (if Sayer’s even exists anymore).

The way you can just wear whatever you want and it’s fine - I live abroad and it’s not like that here.

Natsku · 29/04/2023 09:40

Also lived abroad for 15 years, I miss the friendliness of people, how they will strike up a conversation with you at a bus stop or in a queue or wherever and, if my dad is around, ends up with mutual invitations to visit and someone coming round for Sunday lunch Grin
I miss the pubs, the family and dog friendly ones where you can go on a Sunday afternoon after a ramble and enjoy a pint and some food.
The sense of humour, taking the piss out of your friends.
Prawn cocktail crisps.
The language!

Sudeko · 29/04/2023 09:44

Despite the current problems, it is still a fantastic place to live which beats most others hands down, even if you can only afford to benefit from just a few nice experiences. I know that some countries are run more efficiently and have better public transport and higher wages but that is not a large part of the experience of living contentedly.

regenerista · 29/04/2023 09:45

Traditional pubs
Rolling hills/countryside for walking
Sense of humour
Seaside towns
The weather (I moan about the rain but I think we really appreciate sunny days because of the unpredictability!)

JamSandle · 29/04/2023 09:48

I really love the British sense of humour and that sort of quirky/eccentric side to our humour that I've not ever found anywhere else.
