It's his birthday today and I was wondering how many MNers (especially those with associated names!) would show up and wish the great man best wishes.

Gone, but not forgotten.

GNU Terry Pratchett.

Oh, Sir Terry, sadly missed. You caused my 11 year old son to read BOOKS. All of yours and many others. Thanks for everything.

Greydogs123 · 28/04/2023 22:57

I'm so happy that thanks to a bit of comprehension homework my dd (10) wanted to know what the Tiffany aching books were about and I have been able to introduce her to that part of the discworld canon. She loves them and I am heartily enjoying reading them out loud (my feegle accent is probably shocking!).

@BernardBlacksMolluscs I really want your DC to be named Rincewind.

I love this thread and the references. Sir Pterry was an inspiration. I function better in this world because of him. I am grateful on a frequent basis

Happy birthday Sir PTerry!

He created many wonderful characters. Vimes, Death, Vetinari and Greebo are my favourites.

And the endless quotes one remembers …

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Shawn dived sideways as Greebo went off like a Claymore mine.

"Don't worry about him," said Magrat dreamily, as the elf flailed at the maddened cat. "He's just a big softy."

(I always wonder if Greebo killed that elf.)

I put off reading the Shepherd's Crown for about three years and finally succumbed with great appreciation and sorrow. Kudos to those of you who haven't brought yourself to say goodbye yet.

Along with his writing, I'd like to think that somewhere someone has or will have a better quality last part of their life, or more understanding, because he was public about his final years.

Best writer of female characters ever.

PortiasBiscuit · 29/04/2023 09:30

Magical stuff, I wish I could forget them all, just so I could read them again for the first time.

I was an avid reader anyway, but the world his books took me to was like nothing I’d ever imagined before, so witty with so many hidden references. Faced with a full bookcase, I will never not revisit the Disc.

My sense of humour today remains heavily influenced by the TP books I consumed (decades ago!) in my teenage years. I really wouldn’t be the person I am today without the Discworld.

GNU Terry.

Theluggagerules · 29/04/2023 11:15

GNU
I still have another book to read too OP, it's not time yet

Treaclemine · 29/04/2023 11:22

I am going to have to start again.
But I have been led astray by a search for the other shepherd's crown book, which I bought because my sister had known the author in Australia, but which is a wonderful collection of source material. "The Star-crossed Stone" by Ken McNamara collects all the traditions from Neolithic. It isn't here. I shall go and read Tiffany instead, and see if my sister has the other. There was a woman buried in prehistory surrounded by the fossils, and I wonder if she was to her tribe a Tiffany.
Terry pervades everything, a day can't pass without something reminding ma of something in the books.
I have also learned today of what all this GNU stuff is about. Can't do the geek stuff though.

I love all the usernames that come out specifically for these threads

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 29/04/2023 12:59

I’m in a good position as I only started my TP reading properly a couple of years ago (having read a couple as a child). So I’ve read I’d say half the Discworld books. Must get back to them.

City Watch (obviously!) and Death are my favourites so far.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 29/04/2023 13:02

Also (and I always bring this up on these threads) I kind of met him once. He did a talk at my old university and I was invited. There was a drinks reception afterwards and I stood near him I was far too star struck to say anything so we just nodded to each other in greeting. the only thing I
could think of to say was ‘nice hat’. So I said nothing!

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 29/04/2023 13:03

When I say a couple of years ago I probably mean about 12

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/04/2023 16:41

Two great big lilacs are just starting to bloom near my house. Love them; they always remind me of Sir Terry.

Currently re-reading Maskerade. Anyone for Banana Surprise?

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/04/2023 22:12

I'm not keen on bananas. Maybe Chocolate Delight with Special Secret Sauce, though.
