How would you feel if your adult child went on Naked Attraction?

I won’t pretend I don’t occasionally watch this show, mainly out of a morbid curiosity.

Saw a clip last night where a lovely looking young woman who was articulate and seemed funny and bright was rejected, but told the (bisexual) “picker” that she’d love to have a threesome with her and the man she ultimately chose.

I felt so sad for her. Rejected publicly and still eager to please. i wondered how her family and friends felt watching it.

How would you feel if your child told you they were going on this show?

It does seem like a very sad show to want to go on. I've seen a few episodes in the past, but it feels quite grim even watching it, so goodness knows what it's like to appear on it. Some of the graphic detail that the people freely give about what they like to do sexually is really quite something.

I also saw one episode with a semi-famous person in it, who didn't end up being chosen, and they seemed very affronted and didn't respond in what I (imho) would consider a 100% mentally well manner.

Granted it will be competing with endless pages of much more extreme content, but any appearance on NA will likely make it online and be there forever. I'm still not convinced that the generation of people who have only ever known a world with the internet fully realise the ramifications of this.

Much as I love all the benefits and opportunities that the internet brings us (in spite of all the horrendous stuff that comes with it too), I can't say I'm sorry that I had the chance to grow up, learn and do stupid things as a young adult that nobody ever had a smartphone to record and could never have ended up online for all time.

JockTamsonsBairns · 27/04/2023 23:44

I've never seen the programme, but I'm aware of its existence. It's something I just couldn't bring myself to watch.
I've never considered myself to be a prude, and I'm definitely not in my own private life. I just don't understand the premise of the show at all.
Who are the audience? What motivates people to take part in it? How can they ever return to anonymity?

I just don't understand the appeal at all.

I don’t have any sympathy for these attention seeking idiots that go on national tv like this. What did she think was going to happen?

Well presumably she has very low self esteem, is terribly naive, a bit thick, or has full on mental health issues.

So I think having no sympathy reflects poorly on you.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 27/04/2023 23:50

@FofD ohh spill the tea! What was the crime??

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 28/04/2023 00:03

I think this was the major problem with Big Brother, albeit they (mainly) had their clothes on.

It started with ordinary, everyday people, with agency, in an extraordinary but fascinating psychological experiment. All the Nasty Nick stuff brought interest, but all within the bounds of capable people knowing what they were doing and able to handle the fallout.

They soon started to relax their standards and not exclude people with questionable suitability or agency from participation. Before long, they were deliberately throwing aside the Average Jo(e)s and actively seeking broken, vulnerable people, in a desperate attempt for the ratings and for exploitative shock value.

It was truly nasty, shameful, exploitative TV and made you feel grubby if you even caught half a minute of it whilst channel-flicking.

BadNomad · 28/04/2023 00:12

I always wonder why bigger people go on it. They know the show is based on physical attraction, and I'm pretty sure not once in the whole history of the show has someone with rolls been picked. They never get kicked off first, because the picker doesn't want to be seen as shallow, but they usually get reject second with a bullshit reason like "I'm not really in to tattoos, sorry." It's so transparent.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 28/04/2023 00:26

I wonder if the production team possibly butter less conventionally attractive people up by telling them how diverse, inclusive and fair-minded everybody is - how they ignore any physical imperfections and look straight at the soul when trying to find a true attraction, but, erm, the whole point of the show is that you have to be naked anyway.

Some of them might just be oblivious to reality; and a few might even have that bizarre humiliation kink, where they get off on the thought of people laughing at them, I don't know.

I do find it intriguing what a high proportion of the people have tattoos, though - often very extensive ones. Is it the case that the kind of person to have tattoos is also the kind of person to want to go on the show; or is it that most people have tattoos anyway nowadays, but you just don't know when they've got their clothes on?!

buddylicious · 28/04/2023 00:31

Mortified and I couldn't watch.

My daughter was approached to audition for Love Island. Thank God she decided against it. I wouldn't be able to watch that either!

Fat shaming? I think one of the good things about the show is they do have all shapes and sizes, shaven/unshaven etc rather than so called perfect bodies

Timetochangetheoil · 28/04/2023 01:33

I absolutely hate this show. It just makes me feel icky. I’m not a prude at all but it seems such a cold (literally ha - standing around naked) and almost clinical way of setting people up.

For other people's entertainment. It's fine if the contestants know that, but it's cruel if they're thinking this is a dating show and they might get picked. It can't do any woman's confidence any good, on the show or at home, to see the slim woman with the nice boobs always get picked. Same goes for the men. It's never the skinny guy with the small penis going on the date at the end.

ComputerWifeKaren · 28/04/2023 01:46

Someone I knew vaguely from school went on it. I didn’t know until a friend showed me. Wish they hadn't. It didn't work out well. You can't take that back. I wish her well though.

SpecialControlGroup · 28/04/2023 02:09

It's like the weirdos that go on 'embarrassing bodies' only to say they were too embarrassed to go to their GP yet are more than happy to get their bits/gross ailments out on tv. Wtf are people actually thinking when they do it?

salsmum · 28/04/2023 03:29

I caught a new programme called 'naked education' and had a nose... there were teens in a room and seniors came in and disrobed right in front of them Shock ( the youngest teen was 14, oldest 17) boys and girls. I found myself being embarrassed for them but I'm old 🤣🫣😳

katyperryseyelid · 28/04/2023 03:52

I would be horrified.

My 21 year old ds would never do anything like that though, thank God.

He was approached to audition for love Island, he’s a very good looking lad. He laughed and told them he was a Police Officer and he didn’t want to mess up his career for nothing.

Guavafish1 · 28/04/2023 04:00

Some people are confident and happy being naked. I found the programme boring.

I won't like it if my child when on TV for that but I won't disown them too.

A person close to me went on, was really 'cheeky' with her responses and thought she'd come across as flirty and playful.

In reality she seemed really cheesy and desperate and it was really cringe to watch.

In the end it ruined her life for a period of time. Everyone at work found out and she was let go as had mentioned the company on the show.

Her work friends took the piss and she felt really weird with everyone having seen her. I genuinely believe she thought no one she knew would watch it and wouldn't find out.

Her mum was devastated and distanced herself due to some of the things she'd said on the show. Dad turned a bit of a blind eye which caused huge rows between mum and dad.

Teenage brother mercilessly teased and 'banter' turned into borderline bullying at the college. Not much they could do to stop the pictures circulating, but not really how you want to see your sister.

If anyone googles her name it comes up so difficult with job hunting and dating.

Initially she tried to laugh it off in a good natured way and her close friends chose to go along with that rather than let her dwell on it.

She's still not been home for a Christmas since though.

What did she think would happen, that it would be her ticket to fame and fortune? I struggle to have sympathy for anyone who thinks it's a good idea to go on that show. Obviously someone you know if going to find out.

beachcitygirl · 28/04/2023 04:21

I (like a pp) would be sad
wonder where I had gone wrong that their self esteem and sense
Was so non existent.

missv556 · 28/04/2023 06:18

A boy that lived on the same road as me growing up went on it and I was mortified when I saw him on there. So I can only imagine the horror if my DS went on. I'd like to hope I raise him well enough to not feel the need. I dont remember seeing that boy around again since his episode aired now I think about it. Both mine and his parents still live on the same road and I see his siblings but never him. Fallout from his appearance maybe? I'm no prude and I love watching naked attraction but I could never go on it

Missingmyusername · 28/04/2023 06:23

HirplesWithHaggis · 27/04/2023 22:17

Fair point. Grin I'll carry on not watching just in case!

🙈🤣🤣🤣

Oopswediditagain2023 · 28/04/2023 06:29

My friends (very odd) lodger went on it. Totally freaked her out and she only found out by chance. He was very very shy and quiet and kept himself to himself, so to see him on national tv stark naked was a bit of a shock!

Housewife2010 · 28/04/2023 06:34

The presenter always asks the male pickers what they think of the various women's "vaginas". Unless the picker is conducting an internal, how could he possibly know?

RhubarbFairy · 28/04/2023 06:43

Interesting thread. I've always wondered the same, especially when the contestants announce that they're a teacher!

AmyandPhilipfan · 28/04/2023 07:31

I caught a bit of one the other day when channel hopping. They'd just got to the bit where the faces are revealed and the female picker was talking very seriously about two of them having good noses for if she sat on their faces! I was cringing for her so can't imagine how I'd feel if I knew her!

I also caught the very end of a programme yesterday where two teams had been left naked in a forest for three days and had to race to the finish line to win £5000. Naked. Apart from socks and hiking boots. It was the very last few minutes I saw but I just thought, what was the point in that? What use did being naked have in that situation? The team who didn't win were very disappointed and the woman was saying 'I would never do that again.' Wonder how she feels today having won no money but having shown everything off on TV?
