USA middle & upper mc.. How do they compare to UK & Irish MC & UC

Big difference for me (have family on the East Coast) is the mc style in the East Coast is very preppy (Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade.. Plus Tommy Hilfigger for the teens), understated. And the children do very expensive activities.

Class in the US is wholly dependent on how much money one earns/accumulates.

Whereas, as an American I've read many, many threads on MN about class in the UK, and I still don't get it. Apparently it depends on what your ancestors did for a living. Strange to an American. Anyhoo, here in the US it's all about the $$.

“Anyhoo, here in the US it's all about the $$.”

Not classy.

@Lightninginabox really do you think so? I guess in a way in Ireland & USA, outward wealth is very important.

In IRELAND?! Really? Gosh, that is surprising…

US MC always seems so contrived and fake. It's more akin to the nouveau riche type here. All money and flash cars.

The same can be said about the British middle and upper classes tbh. The approved uniform consists of a sweater covered in dog hair and a wax jacket. It’s just as contrived, and as an outsider looking in, I don’t see the inherent superiority of it.

anyway, in the states it’s income based for the most part, although it’s more complex in New England. It also varies, the upper classes in Massachusetts don’t present the same as the upper classes in California, or Colorado.

Seems a little insecurity has (predicatably and very amusingly) crept into this thread.

I agree that the studiedly unkempt, feral look isn't a thing in the US. Wellies and tutus for kids, dresses and leggings and messy buns for mothers are not a thing.

I don't agree that the preppy look is universally favoured in MC and UMC circles in the US as the alternative. There's more to the US than the east coast. Midwesterners in big cities dress for the weather. Most of the year you wouldn't know what they were wearing because they're bundled up in big puffy coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. People on the west coast have a variety of styles too.

Lifestyle varies according to climate and what individual regions offer in terms of recreation. Kids in MC and UMC areas do tend to do a lot of sports and other activities - sports, music, and dance are huge where I live. All the sports teams in the local high school do tryouts and cuts, apart from cross country.

What a pp calls “outward wealth” is merely ostentatiousness. Think Gatsby.

Not by British standards, no, but they’re not trying to meet British standards 🤷🏻‍♀️

That’s a cliché! You can do better than that, I trust?

whumpthereitis · 25/04/2023 19:45

Anyway, the aristos in Norwich made the local news recently for fighting over a kebab.

Class indeed.

Cam22 · 25/04/2023 19:46

Why do Americans take everything so literally? They should practise irony.

Am I required to? Given that the peddling of cliches seems to be par for the course on this thread.

I’m neither American nor British, and I have no vested interest in arguing the superiority of one over the other. I don’t consider the British way to be better or worse, merely the British way.

MrsMariaReynolds · 25/04/2023 19:51

Jesus, @Cam22 what American pissed onto your Weetabix this morning? 😂

I just love the way cam22 is jumping up and down saying "notice me!!"

You really don't understand the New England wealthy and how they behave if you think it is all flash cars and money. you've just watched a lot of tv.

Actually I wasn’t the person who mentioned flash cars etc. BUT if the cap fits…

Pallisers · 25/04/2023 20:08

I know you weren't. You were the one trying to get everyone's attention by saying insulting things about america. if you had even tried to be amusing ...

legrandcolbert · 25/04/2023 20:10

My US friends (and boyfriend) all say that class isn't a thing in the US like it is here in the UK. US society and one's place within is based on money.

Also, doesn't race come into it? Celebrity too? The latter superseding everything.

It's a totally different landscape in the US. It can't be compared to the UK.

Notanevillandlord · 25/04/2023 20:14

I think everyone should ignore Cam22. You find people like this all the time on threads potentially derailing a good discussion by posting troll nonsense every other post.

As my late mum said ignore and it will go away.

In fact the place is a cultural desert.

Tell me you're ignorant, racist and xenophobic without telling me you're ignorant, racist or xenophobic.

dudsville · 25/04/2023 20:19

Isn't it threads like this that also seem to make out that all England is 1980s films with hugh grant basically displaying "the English"? England isn't "classy" compared to America.

tailinthejam · 25/04/2023 20:41

According to SIL - British but has lived in the states for years, their class system is a very different animal.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/04/2023 21:08

Does it? Now l have an MA in Fashion and Anthropolgy and l used to lecture the stuff.

I’m not sure they all wear that. The country ones might. But MC urbanites would wear natural fibres with no obvious labels ( Pure collection etc)

UC urbanites would wear anything that took their fancy.

Merryandbright1 · 25/04/2023 21:18

DelurkingAJ · 25/04/2023 19:26

My American mother said that one of the hardest things to adjust to was understanding that money and class were completely uncorrelated in the UK. They correlate very closely in the USA (she says, although she did leave 50 years ago…).

It's so true, money & class go hand & hand in the USA.
