Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

Warwick Castle
so expensive to go to but run more like a theme park than a historical building - really hated it.

Couldn’t agree more, and I visited in 1990!

I found Hampton Court disappointing. I remember the Haunted Gallery being so short, sort of blink and you’ll miss it, unlike the only photo I’d seen.

No women in pubs, restaurants only open on weekends.. Was this in 1952?

There ARE still places in Ireland where you will only see men in pubs.

There was a pub in Waterford that would only allow men in. Women were barred. That was very recently.

I've travelled to a lot of places. A lot. I spent two years travelling full time.

I honestly think that everywhere I've been to was a dump. Earth is not great anywhere. You get the same problems with humans and their bad behaviour everywhere you go.

I can't remember any place I've been to that was like a utopia.

I think if I felt like that I would have stopped travelling a lot earlier .

Most places have their good sides.

Ha ha no - 2008! But the place we stayed was not a particularly touristy town. Bit friendlier in places like Blarney where they needed the tourist income.

noodlezoodle · 24/04/2023 22:28

Absolutely cackling at this thread. I can understand being disappointed by Yeovil, but Paris?! Amsterdam??!! New York???!!!

Sad to hear about the disneyfied Warwick Castle, it used to be beautiful and very atmospheric.

Also San Francisco is not a cesspit! Unfortunately a lot of the tourist hotels are right next to the Tenderloin, which is where a lot of homeless people are encamped, so if you take a wrong turn from your hotel you are in for a bit of a shock. Pier 39 is also a bit of a disaster area. But the rest of the city is one of the most beautiful in the world, and one of the safer cities in the US as well, despite what Elon Musk and his tech bro pals would have you believe.

Yes but it's so grey though. Why is every building in Edinburgh grey?

Grey? I see you as the sort of person who has grey taste in decor so you really should love it. Lol

Were you in Waterford?

But most places I didn't like. But it's the humans that mess up the place

rewilded · 24/04/2023 22:38

@Mooshamoo I agree with you Suffolk is a lovely county - although Ipswich is rather drab!

rewilded · 24/04/2023 22:40

Why is everyone so defensive about Edinburgh? I mean San Francisco has had more of a bashing!

Conductpolicy · 24/04/2023 22:42

Love Warwick Castle, but it is glorified for little ones. Still has beautiful gardens and is sooo much fun at halloween.

Paris I also adore but can't deny the thieves and aggressive sellers are something else. Absolutely never in London have I experienced the same threats as Paris. We couldn't even use the child play park by eiffel tower due to drunken leering men.

Amsterdam! The part we were in 7 streets was so smart! Very smart, beautiful flowers and shops, gorgeous pubs.

Roman baths were great, atmospheric.

Conductpolicy · 24/04/2023 22:44

Sorry this is about places we didn't like!

OK Edinburgh.
Been twice now.
All buildings seemed sooty, rough....

Lemonycakage · 24/04/2023 22:48

Newbury. It's like the rough version of Richmond.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 24/04/2023 22:54

MenoRageisReal · 24/04/2023 19:32

@Treesandsheepeverywhere ummm what were your expectations?? I wouldn't say Strichen would ever be on anyone's "day out" list of places to go Grin it's hardly even a place.

It was recommended by someone who lives there or close by.
Asked the lady in the antique shop for somewhere to eat and she couldn't recommended anywhere, not a good sign.

I trained for work in Birmingham, the city centre is a weird place imo. I like the primark but other than that the Bullring and places round it were dull. Also horrible city drive in

You've done so much travel yet you don't know places buildings reflect their locality? Many Edinburgh buildings are made of Craigleith sandstone from the volcanic area it sits on and it's not grey. For that you would have to go to the Granite City.

I must disagree about San Francisco. Was there a few months ago and visited every single bit of it. Whilst the outer areas of the city (Haight-Ashbury, Twin Peaks, Presidio, Richmond) were lovely as were the parks in them - downtown San Francisco was a dump. It's not just the Tenderloin - I tried walking the 5 miles from downtown to Twin Peaks and it was just swathes of homeless. Then decided to take a bus which was equally grim. I grew up in a big Indian city with a high crime rate (so no shrinking violet), have lived in London a long time, DP is a London born police officer and we both agreed it was the most unsafe we've felt. Because unlike in London, there are actual camps of meth heads outside the museums, theatres, shopping district and even outside the big offices (Uber, Airbnb, Twitter HQs). Most tourists don't fly long haul to hang out in middle class suburbia, so not being to comfortably travel the heart of the city to see sights was a disappointment. I didn't find this in New York or Chicago, so was taken aback.

The funniest thing was the CNY Parade which had been marketed as the biggest in the US or something. And it was just a whole bunch of minor Govt officials and politicians in their cars, waving with the occasional high school band interspersing. Compared to the CNY parade in London, it was just so underwhelming especially given the large Chinese population and the fact they shut down all of downtown for it. Even the locals around us were bemused.

We cycled out of SF to Marin County which I much preferred, and of course Yosemite was glorious. Everyone we met was wonderful and friendly so really it was just the out of control homeless situation (and prices) that put us off.

The poster’s ignorance is astounding. All she has to do is google. 🙄

TheaBrandt · 24/04/2023 23:18

Still baffled by the Paris and Amsterdam hate! Where are you going when you are there to come to those views? What are you expecting? Are you properly exploring the city? Amsterdam was soooo beautiful when we went last October half term. Yes they are cities so will be the negatives of any city but the overall beauty and atmosphere overrides that surely? Same for London - great energy and history there.
