Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

Southport, not Liverpool. We loved them.

Agree about Yeovil, though!

They are definitely not in Southport they are on Crosby beach which is actually in Waterloo, Liverpool.

Surprised at the hate for Bath. It's a very beautiful city in the centre. And some great things to do like walk round the Roman Baths or enjoy the rooftop pool at the Thermae Spa. People who are interested in history will find it fascinating and it has good shops and restaurants too.
Some of the architecture especially the Royal Crescent and the Circus are amazing too. A lovely little city to explore, we thought.

Granted I visited decades ago - the Assembly Rooms were closed to repair the roof the first time - but I loved it too. The Museum of Costume, the Roman Baths, the architecture, the lovely women af the Fashion Research Centre (had to go there to look at photos when the costume museum was closed), the amazing giant plane trees in the Circus - are they still alive? - it was beautiful and I loved it. Loved York, too. Maybe they’ve all gone severely downhill since then …

“Was there a few months ago and visited every single bit of it. “

Lie.

Seen more of it than you have in any case.

What a stupid thing to say. 😆😆😆

Well, I felt it was only polite to match your level.

So many of you are copying one another’s choices. Paris and Amsterdam are gorgeous. Some of you clearly visited the tourist traps, only.

@CreepingCrone hmm good question - sounds like Melton Mowbray could do with some livening up! The tagline could be Get Pissed with a Pie Wink

Thanks, but I'm alright. You seem like you need the win more than me.

I must disagree about San Francisco. Was there a few months ago and visited every single bit of it. Whilst the outer areas of the city (Haight-Ashbury, Twin Peaks, Presidio, Richmond) were lovely as were the parks in them - downtown San Francisco was a dump. It's not just the Tenderloin - I tried walking the 5 miles from downtown to Twin Peaks and it was just swathes of homeless. Then decided to take a bus which was equally grim. I grew up in a big Indian city with a high crime rate (so no shrinking violet), have lived in London a long time, DP is a London born police officer and we both agreed it was the most unsafe we've felt. Because unlike in London, there are actual camps of meth heads outside the museums, theatres, shopping district and even outside the big offices (Uber, Airbnb, Twitter HQs). Most tourists don't fly long haul to hang out in middle class suburbia, so not being to comfortably travel the heart of the city to see sights was a disappointment. I didn't find this in New York or Chicago, so was taken aback.

The funniest thing was the CNY Parade which had been marketed as the biggest in the US or something. And it was just a whole bunch of minor Govt officials and politicians in their cars, waving with the occasional high school band interspersing. Compared to the CNY parade in London, it was just so underwhelming especially given the large Chinese population and the fact they shut down all of downtown for it. Even the locals around us were bemused.

We cycled out of SF to Marin County which I much preferred, and of course Yosemite was glorious. Everyone we met was wonderful and friendly so really it was just the out of control homeless situation (and prices) that put us off.

But the outer areas of the city ARE the city! It's only 7 miles square Grin

Yes, downtown is a bit gnarly at the moment - it's taking us a long time to rebound from the pandemic, especially because a lot of the downtown tech companies went permanently remote.

But I think what you're describing as the heart of the city is downtown/Market Street/the Financial District. Even before the pandemic those places weren't the most thrilling - there is so much fantastic stuff to see just a little bit off the beaten track.

Anyway I doubt I'll be able to convince you otherwise, and I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your trip. And it is indeed bloody expensive.

Ah I see what you mean! I think in my head i was comparing downtown to the equivalent of central london/the City and the outer areas of SF as zone 3 London. Because I'm in zone 3 London which is about 7 miles from Central London and wouldn't expect tourists to necessarily travel out to my area (though it's fab!) on a visit bypassing all the fab touristy stuff of zone 1. But I did think it was probably pandemic related as a lot of city centres have taken a hit.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 25/04/2023 00:02

Peak Wildlife Park.

Really disappointed and such a letdown.

TillyTollyTully · 25/04/2023 00:11

The chocolate museum in Bruges.

I love chocolate. I love museums. But fuck me, I was bored stiff after 15 minutes. Couldn't wait to get out of there.

Indiana2021 · 25/04/2023 00:43

The Loch Lomond area. Despite it's apparent beauty I find it bleak, oppressive and dull. My mood changes despite usually loving being close to water.
It sucks the life out of me and if I happen to be anywhere near I can't wait to leave.

Australian from Victoria here,

Kryal Castle near Ballarat. Absolute disappointment and an expensive one at that.

Also Victorian, I asked friends who’d been to about Kryal Castle years ago and they said the same - save your time and money!

Sovereign Hill, though, I loved. Used to go there every year, I was on first name terms with some of the staff. 😄

Catsmere · 25/04/2023 02:41

La Brea in LA. This was ten years ago. Waste of time and money, nothing really to see, crappy displays.

Yerroblemom1923 · 25/04/2023 06:47

We thought Yeovil disappointing and depressing too. Only stopped off overnight on our way further South but was glad to leave!

Probably too mean to pay for colour.

I'm not easily offended, but this is not okay. Resorting to base stereotypes is pathetic.

We all have different opinions on places- I find the positives in most places I visit and I've always been a traveller in my.bones- but this is just ignorance and shows a sheer lack of intelligence and decency.

And Mooshamoo your ignorance is astounding. Also, this thread isn't about your woo. I dont want to hear about your negative, woo slant on how most of our world is shit. Boring and depressing. You'd be great at parties.

We spent most of our visit to SF in Haight Ashbury(sp?) and the Castro, only doing the obligatory Fishermen’s Wharf/steep cable car thing once. I do agree it’s weird to imagine someone coming to London and spending their time in Finchley, for example. But it felt totally ‘city’ there. I’d be surprised if tourists went to Canary Wharf and came away thinking London was much cop.

But you are basically telling people to go inside buildings and look at stuff. Don't people want a bit more from a city? Some beauty, views, the capacity to wander eg up to Hampstead, down to the Botanics in Edinburgh, jump on a tram to explore Lisbon, meander the streets of Barcelona I don't know, not just go inside buildings to look at stuff. Doubtless it's good stuff, but is it enough? I don't think so. Dublin does what it can with what it has, but the competition for a more rounded experience elsewhere is fierce.

Ride the Dart train along the coast to Bray and back through town to Howth, sitting on the sea view side (avoid rush hour). Walk on Howth head, with views over the city and all along the coast. Or pause at Dunlaoghaire and walk out the sea wall. Walk on Sandymount Strand (or Dollymount beach and the Bull island). Go to the Botanic gardens, and while you're in Glasnevin do the historic cemetery tour, including the patriots' plot. Stroll in St Stephen's Green, then walk back to and through Trinity college. Take a few walking tours of the city. Visit the Phoenix park, one of the biggest enclosed urban parks in the world, with a vistors' centre in a restored Victorian garden. There's a lot to see and do.

Magnoliainbloom · 25/04/2023 07:21

Brighton. Very creepy feeling.

rookiemere · 25/04/2023 07:22

I've thought of a couple more. Albufeira- we were staying along the coast and thought we'd go in for the day. It made Scarborough look upmarket. Everyone said we had missed the old town, so we went in again and looked for hours and it all still seemed tacky and unpleasant.

See also Sorrento which was a huge disappointment <but not a day trip so doesn't strictly count) great base though for sight seeing.

Visited a rural residential town on a Sunday and disappointed it wasn’t a hive of entertainment?!? The high streets of meant small towns are now run down with closed shops. I’m surprised this surprises you.

perhaps do some research first!

Warwick Castle
so expensive to go to but run more like a theme park than a historical building - really hated it.

I agree. It makes me so cross. I have been many times as a child and it used to be beautiful-haunting and full of mystery, wonder and thought provoking silence. You could imagine the people that had walked before you.

Now it’s a theme park as you say. It’s been utterly ruined. The noise of music and clattering from stands all around. The atmosphere has been lost. They have removed most of the old rose garden. It’s terrible. Somebody should reinstate it as it was. It’s a travesty.😭

I apologise. As a Scot, I am happy to play up to the stereotype, but I accept that this is not true for everyone.
