Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

What an absolutely ridiculous comment. Why don't you just pile on with the stereotypes, come on: drunken Scots; aggressive Scots; tight Scots?

Big cities have big nightlife/ lots of students/ tourists. You'll find similar in every big city in the UK come the weekend.

I love Edinburgh. Not the short-bread tin, tartan, Bonnie Prince Charlie tourist crap, but the independent shops/ great restaurant/ cafes/ pubs/ gigs. You need to venture away from tourist central.

Must have a problem with alcoholism. Jesus. Little England ism in one statement.

I also love York (didn't see drunkeness actually), Liverpool and Amsterdam.

Clearly the little Englanders are clueless. Edinburgh frequently features on such lists. So ya boo sucks.

“The Edinburgh and East Lothian locations named as the best places to live for 2023. The Best Places to Live in Scotland in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide have just been announced and Edinburgh and the Lothians are home to two of the top picks.”

FrostyFifi · 24/04/2023 21:44

@Mostar omg yes! It was the crappest, most underwhelming place I can imagine. The random tower and people doing The Pose and apart from that nothing, dirty and boring.

Fortunately we went to Sienna the next day.

Cam22 · 24/04/2023 21:45

The Telegraph poll concurs. The readers must have better taste than some of the weirdos here.

Mooshamoo · 24/04/2023 21:49

I live in another part of ireland at the mo. Dublin really is a terrible dump. I always try to get through it as quickly as possible.

The bus station is the worst. It's the only bus station I've sat in, where heroin addicts come inside and come up to you and ask you for money. Inside the building. It's grim.

THisbackwithavengeance · 24/04/2023 21:51

I'm always underwhelmed by Edinburgh every time I visit. Although to be fair it's always pissing down with rain every time I go and I might like it better if it were sunny.

DH is Glaswegian and hates the place on principle.

Mooshamoo · 24/04/2023 21:51

sorry before I offend everyone!

I've lived most of my life in Ireland and the UK. I think most of Ireland is pretty bad. Nothing to do. Poor transport. Boring. Smallmindedness.

I also thought most of the UK was grim. All the cities are the same, grey, dull, rough, fights on the street, overcrowding. The only part of the UK that I have liked so far is Norfolk and suffolk

@Itakecreaminmycoffee

To be fair, the covered market is struggling nowadays. As you'll probably be going back at some point, can I suggest a few places for lunch...
Next to the RadCam is The Vaults, underneath the church there.

Then Handel Bar - St Michael's st, not far from The Union,
in Jericho, The Jericho Cafe,Wilding Oxford,
Or more formal stuff - Ashmoleam cafe, The Alice at The Randolf, Gee's,
Or try Cowley road - Cafe Coco, loads of cafes down there,
Opposite Head of the River not far from the shopping centre, is a lovely cafe called the Paper Boat.
Victors at the top of the Westgate is nice too.

Honestly, I'm really surprised you can't find somewhere nice for lunch. PM me if you like.

Oh thank you houselikeashed - that's very kind. Noted!

I’m not a fan of Manchester. Went on my own for a day sight seeing and shopping but massively underestimated how big and busy it is. I love Liverpool and Birmingham and will happily go to the city centre visiting the shops and museums on my own but I just don’t feel comfortable in Manchester.

Hated Blackpool. I knew it was going to be tacky but thought it would be fun but it was so dirty, there was rubbish everywhere. My kids begged me not to go back there!

Used to live in Cambridge. Mill road is meant to be the vibrant area with independent restaurants and shops, all different sorts of cuisines etc. It’s been years since I’ve been but I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit there. I do however love the river and areas such as Grantchester. I love the colleges and history and just knowing the likes of Sir Isaac Newton were there.

Mooshamoo · 24/04/2023 21:54

Yes but it's so grey though. Why is every building in Edinburgh grey?

pimplebum · 24/04/2023 21:58

Only boring people are bored - so my mum says

Mooshamoo · 24/04/2023 21:58

Earth is grim. I want to go to a different planet.

I'm into spiritual books.

Dolores cannon - is a spiritual author. She is very interesting.
She said that we are spirits before we come here to Earth.

She said that Some spirits choose to go to other planets, and some spirits choose to come to Earth, to learn the challenging lessons.

She wrote this:

"Earth is the most difficult planet of them all, only the bravest souls choose to come here".

You should go to Aberdeen.

Chickdaft · 24/04/2023 22:01

I think any place you visit is what you make it. Went to Camden last year for 3 nights and loved it! Fab eateries, we booked our tables outside in the warm weather and the Indian restaurant served us complimentary baileys at the end of our meal! Great place for ppl watching and just chilling. Ok, the market is a lot of rinse and repeat re the shops and stalls but fab place to wander about in.
Went to wimbledon on the Sunday and staff at the tube couldn’t have been more helpful in showing us where to change/directions. Did we feel unsafe? Absolutely not, everyone was so nice 😊
Heading to Edinburgh for a B Springsteen concert end of May and love that city. Princess St gardens are a fab place to just sit and enjoy all the vibes of Edinburgh….old fashioned ice cream van close by. Any city or town is what you make of it. Can be anything from the fish and chips, 5 * restaurants or just the ppl you meet if you take time to chat to them.

This is what happens when more and more people shop at Tesco and Amazon. Quite simple really.

Well said.

Most high streets now are shadows of themselves half the shops are empty and the other half are either charity shops, takeaways, betting shops or vape shops.

Utterly depressing.

You should go to Aberdeen.

I've been! And I've been to Glasgow and st Andrews!

Why is every building in Scotland grey! Is there a theme there for some reason. Who designed the place 😂

Probably too mean to pay for colour.

Agree about Dublin. We struggled to find enough to do. And we are generally happy anywhere. Queued for ages to see the Book of Kells and saw a few pretty buildings and then wondered what to do. The only other thing that looked interesting was the Gaol but it seemed to be a long way out and the public transport to get there was not easy. Ireland is gorgeous, but I would give Dublin a miss next time

IMO it’s not much of a “tourist city” as European capitals go. But it’s a fun/interesting city to walk around. It’s a city to spend a day or two walking around at a leaisurely pace and exploring North and South of the Liffey (broken up by cafe, lunch, and a pub or two) rather than a big activity/attractions type city. EG, walk up O’Connel street and Henry Street (north of the river), wonder into the famous post office, have a drink somewhere. Then wonder over the ha’ penny bridge past trinity college and then up Graffton street. Have lunch in the oriental cafe. Then onto st stephens green. Add in one or two the pretty central cathedrals, famine monuments/immigration museum/Chester Beatty library etc . Basically it’s a city for wandering around on foot at a leisurely pace rather than zipping between “big” attractions (of which there basically aren’t any relative to most capitals). But you can easily spend two days wondering Dublin - and then another two exploring all the pretty coastal towns in Dublin county easily accessible by train

anotherside · 24/04/2023 22:11

I think Edinburgh is a fantastic city to visit once - the “setting” in and of itself is spectacular.

Mooshamoo · 24/04/2023 22:16

Bali is another place that I was underwhelmed by.

I went to it thinking it would be a lush peaceful utopia. The part that I went to, was actually just full of retired English and Irish alcoholics. Creepy old men

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/04/2023 22:18

Even a hotel committed suicide by throwing itself off a cliff, it's that bad.

🤣🤣🤣

mac1974 · 24/04/2023 22:19

Edinburgh is amazing
Agree with Manchester. It's not nice...I live here and it's just dirty in the city centre. Only very small parts are worth going to

I'm off to bath this weekend. Bit worried now!

anon666 · 24/04/2023 22:21

Oh wow. Most of these places I've loved.

Bath

Edinburgh

Oxford

I'm not easily underwhelmed

Mind you, I've now struck Yeovil off my curiosity list! To be fair it was never really on there to start with. I'm sure it's a lovely place though, as is most of the South West.

I was underwhelmed by Devizes recently. Again a Sunday in a small town/village in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure it's lovely to live there without tourists crowding locals out!
