Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

I went to a zoo recently and all it had was one dog.

Was it a Shih Tzu?

When people are mentioning British towns here - York, Bath, Stratford on Avon - it probably makes a big difference whether you had planned a long weekend there or a day trip including a lunch which will take up at least an hour.

I liked York (went a couple of years back), Stratford I go regularly but, as above, this is to meet friends for lunch and a wander by the river and may be the shops. I have noticed in the last couple of years that a few smaller towns have suffered a lot with closures due to impact of lockdowns and COL which is sad .

I wasn't exactly inspired by Paris either , DH keeps requesting to go back so maybe it will seem preferable on a second visit .

Interested to see comments about Ludlow - we had planned to go for a recent weekend but had to cancel . Although we had also intended to do a bit of a walk nearby .

I really dislike Cambridge

HATED Cambridge. Too many bikes and pavements too narrow.

Blimeor · 24/04/2023 13:56

Your post makes me sad but not surprised. I love history and I am a English woman proud if my country. There's so many great things of interest in, not just England, but the whole UK that I think is ignored or just uncared for and I often think "if this were in America they'd quite rightly make a huge song and dance about this". It's such a huge shame.

Stonehenge. Absolutely perishing cold, so far away from the stones.

Any sense of wonder for me has been seriously wrecked, ever since I learned that the stones have only been (continually) standing for less than 100 years, since they were concreted in place!

Eden Project..... Expensive bimble around a garden centre....Grin

Definitely this. Most expensive and underwhelming day of a lovely fortnight in Cornwall.

Agree with the PP who said Durham.

DS went to university there and we had been looking forward to visiting a few times, but then Covid hit in his second year, so that was that.

We finally went last year for his delayed graduation ceremony and stayed 5 days so we could really explore, and were disappointed. The main bit is obviously stunning but we struggled to find a decent restaurant, and in fact had the worst meal I have ever eaten in my life there.

I would love to go back to that part of the world, but I've definitely 'done' Durham!

Ah that's a shame! I love living in Durham.
Did you visit Beamish museum? Always recommend that it's a fab day trip out!

MidlandCatGirl · 24/04/2023 13:58

Bath.

Something about the place just sets me on edge, like I’m waiting for something to happen or it just has.

luckylavender · 24/04/2023 13:58

Gibraltar. What a tip.

cocksstrideintheevening · 24/04/2023 13:59

Margate - gentrified my arse

Bakewell

Controversial one here - the pyramids.
Hassled the whole time by scammers, McDonalds next door and guards moving you on constantly.

Not worth the 6 hour drive each way.

I agree. Also the Valley of the Kings.
In contrast, Karnak (that I'd not really heard of) blew my mind and changed my whole underestanding of that period. Went at christmas - and the light and shadows at sunset were enthralling.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 24/04/2023 13:59

Kirkcudbright.

Was expecting lovely Scots fishing port with bookshops and cafes.

They did have these but all felt very flyblown and arse end of nowhere.

Mind you 18m old DS2 was the grump of his life on that holiday so my perception may have been coloured unduly ... perhaps I should go again!

I think Edinburgh does have a problem and it isn't necessarily the hen and stag parties.

SnoringPains · 24/04/2023 14:02

Edinburgh. Didn’t like it at all, only place in Scotland I’ve had a bad experience.

Hay on Wye. It was tail end of covid but it just has such a dead, down and out vibe to the whole area

Paris wasn't as great as I envisaged, it felt quite grey and strangely dull in some respects

Whitby, had been looking forward to it for so long and it was nice, but not as nice as I had imagined and a bit grimy in places

Sydney, I can't really remember it much, the opera house was a bit meh and as a whole it just didn't impact me like I thought it would

Ah Whitby....We got the steam train from Pickering to Whitby which was great, but as soon as we got into Whitby station the magic disappeared pretty quickly!

The station is dominated by a massive supermarket, and I just thought from peoples comments Whitby wasn't going to be your normal rundown seaside town, but it is!.

Granted the Abbey is a good visit , but apart from that there is absolutely nothing for kids to do, the beach is rubbish unless you walk to sandsend...I imagine it's just a good 'couples get away' place.

Absolutely no intention of going again, but some people swear by it.

We didn't. We did Bamburgh (most definitely not disappointing) and Housesteads Roman fort (ditto) but I could see that there was loads more to see and do up there! I would love to come up again, but we live in Cornwall so it's a long way away!

I didn't hate Durham, but it was disappointing. DS was very happy there though, in spite of all the Covid crap.

@EvelynKatie I have been to Beamish Museum, but it is not in Durham.

ItsHardknocklife · 24/04/2023 14:06

Torquay just awful... Exeter but I live here and it's just meh nothing to do and full of drugs and drunks.. Plymouth.. Brighton, Bristol and bath is a no from me.. I love London tho 😁

See I thought Valley of the Kings was great! Wanted to go my whole life and the paintings inside the tombs were just amazing. I also loved Karnak temple, another place I always wanted to go too. Hatshepsut's temple was good too, but lots of hassle there.

Hohofortherobbers · 24/04/2023 14:07

Dorchester, thought I was going to a quaint little market, but it was really run down with a high st full of charity shops and a narjwt selling cheap knock off t shirts.

GOW56 · 24/04/2023 14:08

Bath, strange place

I loved everything about Bath!

Calmdown14 · 24/04/2023 14:08

@Treesandsheepeverywhere were you stricken in Strichen?

It would fit your username well but it's really not a usual tourist destination because, well, there's nothing there
