Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

Penzance, it’s a dump. Also basically anywhere along on the Kent coast, Broadstairs Margate etc are shitholes, found Whitstable quite underwhelming and overhyped too.

I went to a zoo recently and all it had was one dog.

Sounds like a shit zoo.

It can absolutely be grey!

From dirt, smoke etc. Sandstone itself is mellow goldenish. When many years ago the galleries were cleaned, the smokey black of a century or so of trains removed, they glowed with such beauty. I think you, if you were that poster, are thinking of granite.

Stonehenge. Absolutely perishing cold, so far away from the stones.

Me too. It was the distance from the stones that was the overwhelming disappointment. Surely just employ a few more security guards!

Was going to ask about the Natural History Museum. DS really wants to go but it would be a long journey for us

The Natural History Museum is one of my favourite buildings, and worth a visit for its architecture alone imo. Not sure of the style (Gothic Revival, maybe?) but it has amazing carvings decorating all the pillars and stuff. The main hall is a wonderful space.

But great for kids who are into dinosaurs, animals and stuff, and there are loads of other interesting bits.

The other nice thing about it is it's so near the science museum and the V&A, so you can see all 3 in a day, if your feet are up to it.

I love the NHM! I think the trick is to get a timed ticket for as soon as it opens and see the dinosaurs first before the huge queue builds up, then leave before it gets mega busy. The building itself is beautiful. I agree some of the exhibits are looking a bit tired - they hadn’t changed much since I was a child and I’m nearly 50.
The free museums are an amazing resource - also love the V&A and the British museum (another amazing building) The Science museum is great but always far too busy.

I could just stand and stare at the building. It is incredible

WilsonMilson · 24/04/2023 13:45

Dublin. I just don’t get it, there’s nothing except bars, and so expensive. Galway, on the other hand, lovely.

Eqs · 24/04/2023 13:45

In our rural town everything would also be shut on s Sunday - they’re barely open past 4 on a Saturday!!

shadowchancesassy · 24/04/2023 13:45

Legoland-
Over hyped
Over priced
Hated it!

Yeovil doesn’t exactly have the reputation of being a nice place for a day trip though does it?
In a similar vein though, we once went to Melton Mowbray thinking it would have lots of nice pie shops/food market etc, and it was a shit hole 😂. My children were like ‘why have you brought us here?’.

Came on to say Melton Mowbray. I didn’t even see Jamie Vardy.

Sandstone isn’t grey. The clue is in the name😀

Sorry I posted to soon meant to say its grey because of the kind of sandstone it is the dirt and soot just sticks to it centuries of grime. Edinburgh is still nice to visit

Emeraldsrock · 24/04/2023 13:48

Great Yarmouth, Torquay, Cannes.

AskMeMore · 24/04/2023 13:49

Agree about Dublin. We struggled to find enough to do. And we are generally happy anywhere. Queued for ages to see the Book of Kells and saw a few pretty buildings and then wondered what to do. The only other thing that looked interesting was the Gaol but it seemed to be a long way out and the public transport to get there was not easy.
Ireland is gorgeous, but I would give Dublin a miss next time.

Sugargliderwombat · 24/04/2023 13:49

Budapest.

Boogiewoogieanddance · 24/04/2023 13:49

@ShandaLear if your even in Ireland and have the chance to go to Bunratty Castle in Limerick it's amazing. Like Carrickfergus on Steroids, a but more expensive but worth it... would deffinatley get a day out of it.

Edinburgh. Dull, grey, miserable.
Full of scary loud drunks, vomit on the pavement.

The vomit on the pavement and in shop doorways is what I remember most about Edinburgh absolutely piles of it like when a dog has been sick or regurgitated food Alcolism must be a significant problem there.

It's not Edinburgh people, it's the stag and hen parties.

Edinburgh is an architectural wonder, full of history and culture, great food, interesting walks and a fantastic place to live. Plus one
Of the world's best festivals every August.

It's just spoiled by the dildo brigade who come to get drunk only. Hopefully they will all move on to York now as the in-place.

Where did you travel from? Yeovil is dull on any day. Far nicer parts to visit.

Love Brighton! Love London!

Isn’t Buntatty in Co Clare?

yoga4meinthemorning · 24/04/2023 13:53

Portobello
North facing beach so not that much sunlight
Grubby front with lots of litter
Not many shops
Difficult to park

Carnoustie

Nothing but the golf course

Tidsleytiddy · 24/04/2023 13:54

Bunratty

Justhereforthebotox · 24/04/2023 13:54

I love the different takes on this thread!!
For my part, I’ve just come back from Paris with my teen ds. We had an amazing time. Didn’t do anything majorly touristy except the Eiffel Tower but mainly just wandered along the river, ate amazing steak frites, chilled in the Tuileries, wandered up to the Sacré Coeur. He was just amazed by the beauty around every corner…….and this is a kid who generally is only interested in gaming online with his mates!

Madcats · 24/04/2023 13:54

I am surprised by some of these suggestions, not least because I love living in Bath (though concede they could do more to make it welcoming to tourists). I can see that people might be underwhelmed if they've sat in a traffic jam for 30 minutes, only to be charged £15 to park and then get shat on by one of the growing seagull and pigeon populations. Closing most of the public loos and the tourist info office was the height of stupidity.

I really wanted to visit Carcassonne; it's one of the few boardgames we play as a family! Worth noting they we should probably find a lovely gite or country hotel.

Cullen in Aberdeenshire was actually the worst!
Weird feel through out and couldn't wait to get out of there.
Antique shops didn't help with the stuff they had on sale.

Never again.

Cullen is my favourite place in the world - those junk shops are junk but the world’s best ice cream and beach…!!!!

Pavlova31 · 24/04/2023 13:55

About the Portmeirion pottery. The large green corrugated building just after the entrance until a couple of years ago was a large shop for only Portmeirion pottery seconds ( minor defects and could save a lot of money) . Now being largely a cafe with just a few racks squeezed in the back. Not sure that was an improvement.
