Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

I can't believe someone has said that Chester isn't pretty or historical!

This!! I live in Chester and consequently feel that most other places I visit are comparatively naff 😂

So much history, the amphitheatre, grosvenor park, story house library, grosvenor museum. Chester zoo is probably one of the best attractions I’ve ever been too. The icecream farm, lovely town centre with old Tudor buildings.

I also completely disagree with the comments about Warwick castle. I’ve been since I was a child and loved it then and still love it now. We do like the attraction side of things- my little ones love the Zog trail and knights training academy, but also love walking around the castle, seeing the rooms and views from the top. My eldest loves the information videos too and information on battles etc, the trebuchet and falconry show. Food was very very expensive though for what it was.

@EvelynKatie I have been to Beamish Museum, but it is not in Durham.

Chippenham, Newport (Wales) and Chichester

I hope you mean Newport Gwent and not the utterly delightful Newport Pembrokeshire, which is one of my favourite places in the world.

cantelouper · 24/04/2023 14:10

Another vote here against The Eden Project. It was taking nearly a quarte of an hour to sell each family a ticket. Trying to sell them different types of membership. Trying to get them to fill in a form with their name and address so they could pester them for ever. Then telling each child to do their own form.
Very worn exhibits, overpriced food, and clear away yourself.

Also New York, been lots of times with work.
loud, dirty, unsafe, food is disgusting unless you pay for top end restaurants. Same for Hotels. Tiny rooms and super high prices.

AskMeMore · 24/04/2023 14:11

@EvelynKatie I know. But its not really relevant to someone saying Durham is a crap place to visit. Its like come here and there are great day trips outside of the City to visit. Why not just stay in the countryside then and visit those attractions?
I say that as I live in a nice place to live that is boring for tourists. Loads of lovely day trips though nearby. But I would never advise tourists to visit where I live.

AllIwantforChristmas22 · 24/04/2023 14:12

In England Brighton and Hayling Island.

on the other hand, loved Waddesdon at Christmas and will definitely go again this year.

Allschoolsareartschools · 24/04/2023 14:12

After 3 visits, I still haven't found anything nice in Manchester city centre & I'm not giving it any more chances.
I enjoyed Trafford Centre & Salford Quays. Tatton Park was lovely but I can't see any attraction for the centre & was very relieved when dd didn't choose the uni there.

Not the point of this thread but if anyone is visiting West Yorkshire and doesn't now fancy Hebden Bridge or the Sculpture Park after the slagging on here, I utterly recommend the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield. We had such a fantastic day and it hardly cost us anything.

AskMeMore · 24/04/2023 14:14

Hebden Bridge is nice for a little pootle around if you happen to be passing through.

MsFannySqueers · 24/04/2023 14:15

@Treesandsheepeverywhere. Ah now I was prepared to let you have Strichen. It’s a quiet village always clean and well kept. Naturally it doesn’t have many shops. The people are very friendly. Although Alex Salmond lives there we can’t hold that against them. It has a great antiques place and a fabulous butcher’s. But Cullen! A gem on the Moray Firth. It’s a lovely place gorgeous beach and cafes. We sat a couple of weeks ago in the little garden in the town square eating fish and chips. It was absolutely idyllic. I would say if you are spooked by the antiques on offer in Cullen definitely don’t visit the pet cemetery there.

Paris. Never been so disappointed!

Same. My (then) 5 year summed up our visit with an exasperated sigh of “is that it?”

Canterbury and Margate

I think I had really low expectations of Margate because I really liked it. Everyone else I know who's been hated it

Clacton - absolute dump
Nothing there, loads of shops shut down.
Would never ever go there again

Miami and parts of Hollywood

JemimaPyjamas · 24/04/2023 14:22

I live in Hebden Bridge and one thing I have noticed more and more is that at weekends it is getting very busy with hen and stag do's (or just groups of people out on the piss) and all that can entail.

While this is good for some businesses it's obviously not great for all, and those who had awful impressions may have had them due to that. There have been times that I would have thought the same if I was just visiting. It's not like that 7 days a week though, promise!

I hated it too.

Total dump !

dittbtdity · 24/04/2023 14:23

Nottingham was really dreary. We had an appointment there during the day and had time to spare before the train home, so we jumped on a tram going to Phoenix Park which sounded lovely but when we got there it was a massive park and ride car park on the edge of town 😂. Also Nottingham Castle had a beer festival going on that day so the castle was closed. And it rained.

Chippenham, Newport (Wales) and Chichester

Why would anyone ever think Newport was worth visiting in the first place?

Sadly, it's very deprived and rundown and has been for some time, although the Transporter Bridge is interesting and I've heard good stuff about the indoor market.

I think half the problem is that visitors expect ordinary places where people live to be playgrounds.

And that generic and very annoying 'I'm going on a holiday/visit to Wales' makes visitors think the whole place is beautiful when years of deprivation make many areas utter shitholes.

Unfortunately the tourist areas of Amsterdam are mostly a bit shit. I used to live there and promise it's an amazing place if you keep away from the Dam Rak/Leidseplein/Red Light District kind if areas.

Agree, stay out of the central tourist areas and some of Amsterdam is lovely. There are some amazing markets outside the central area and some lovely parks too. I used to live in the south of the city by the river and loved walking along the river banks, you're out in the countryside surprisingly quickly.
