What fruit actually gets eaten in your household?

When I buy fruit I find too much of it gets wasted if we don’t eat it straight away.

It’s only me and one teenager at home and I try not to waste food but this week I threw out some strawberries which went mouldy and the bananas went brown before we ate them. We also had blueberries and avocados this week and did eat them. It doesn’t help that neither of us particularly like fruit but I buy it to make sure my dc gets a balanced diet or they would be living on chips.

What fruit do you buy and what do you eat or end up throwing away?

I do prefer veg and will make a soup if I’ve got any hanging around.

Shame - you could equally have made a smoothie with any of the fruits you mention throwing away 😕

I never throw away any fruit at all, bananas are never a problem to eat (we love em!) but I don't buy more than one kind of berry / fridge fruit every week because they only last a couple of days.

Apples, satsumas etc are fine in the bowl for at least a week. A pear, kiwi or avocado is a treat which is anticipated while it sits in the fruit bowl, waiting for the perfect moment of ripeness.

ChiChaNaYubi · 24/04/2023 08:19

My toddler eats nearly a punnet of raspberries a day! He has lots of allergies though so fruit and veg are quite limited for him. Admittedly the rest of us are really crap at eating fruit and we need to eat more.

Phos · 24/04/2023 08:27

Bananas, satsumas (or similar) and grapes go first. We usually finish at least a punnet of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries in a week as well. Apples are hit and miss, sometimes they get eaten, sometimes not so I’m loathe to buy too many. I have an impulse bought mango in the fridge now, we love them but it’s effort to chop up so I need to make an effort to serve it at teatime today.

In season we have loads of apples and plums because our front garden is a small orchard.

Rest of the year we buy regularly:
Pears, Apples, Grapes, Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries and Watermelon

Most of it is for DD (3.5) as she loves it. DH and me mainly have grapes and apples.

Deathraystare · 24/04/2023 10:11

Diabetic so not 'allowed' any exotic fruit so have apples, pears and berries. Not often as usually forget but there is a lovely greengrocer open until late so sometimes I do cross the road to get stuff.

stormelf · 24/04/2023 10:43

I buy apples, bananas, pears and satsumas every week. It all gets eaten, my children are 5, 3 and 1 though so easier to get them to eat fruit. I buy one punnet of grapes or blueberries a fortnight which seem to last as well. As a treat they get a watermelon once a month. I end up freezing about 1/4 of the water melon to avoid waste

stbrandonsboat · 24/04/2023 11:14

Bananas, tangerines, blueberries and apples. I also buy fresh raspberries and persimmons when they're in season.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 24/04/2023 11:18

I love fruit but I buy melons and pineapples and am then too lazy to chop them up.

grapes, apples, pears never go to waste here. I hate ripe bananas but husband uses them in smoothies. I’m fed up of some fruit you buy it and it’s brick hard and then seems
go rotten or grainy without having ever been nice enough to eat.

Adifferentheadspace · 24/04/2023 11:40

DD eats most of the fruit in our house, which is just as well as she’s an otherwise fussy eater and has always refused to eat salads/cooked vegetables!

Our weekly shopping list includes:

Bananas
Apples
Grapes
Strawberries
Raspberries

Occasionally I’ll get in kiwis and blackberries as well.

shivawn · 24/04/2023 11:46

We buy raspberries, blueberries, grapes, apples and bananas every week. Occasionally strawberries and mangos.

Most of it gets eaten but there's a bit of waste to be honest.

unfor · 24/04/2023 11:49

Also one adult, one teenager.
Always have Aldi frozen berries.
Usually buy two of apple/banana/pear/satsuma. In season I will buy berries, nectarines, plums, persimmon but I wouldn't get them this time of year.

ThreeRingCircus · 24/04/2023 11:52

Luckily DDs are 6 and 3 so it's easy to get fruit into them and they will eat all fruit. Each week I usually buy 3 or 4 options out of:

Apples
Oranges
Pears
Grapes
Bananas
Plums
Melon
Berries

Anything that goes over before it gets eaten gets put into the compost bin.

I do like fruit but don't eat a lot of it as I try not to snack so unless I have it as part of a meal I don't tend to eat it. Blueberries and raspberries are the safest bet as I'll have them with yoghurt for breakfast sometimes.

NutButters · 24/04/2023 11:55

Berries disappear immediately, as if a swarm of locusts has descended.
Watermelon, grapes and oranges get eaten.
Apples and bananas sit untroubled in the bowl until I make them into cake, and yet if I don't buy them you can guarantee that at least one person will complain that we don't have them.

Badbudgeter · 24/04/2023 11:56

Bananas, apples, oranges and pears are standard. Sometimes widen my horizons if there is something nice in the Aldi six. I find fruit really expensive now.

not much wastage though any brown bananas or tired fruit can be grated/ smooshed into batter for a quick batch of muffins less than 10 minutes in the air fryer.

xogossipgirlxo · 24/04/2023 12:04

Apples, bananas- we buy loads as I love apples and husband loves bananas
Grapefruits (but not more than 2-3 a week as it's only me eating them). Husband eats lot of oranges in the winter. I buy a punnet of grapes 2-3 times a month too. I also eat frozen fruit (in porridge or add them to water).

DiscoBeat · 24/04/2023 12:08

Satsumas get eaten at first but some end up on the compost for some reason. Blueberries, raspberries and bananas all get eaten. Unless the bananas go black when you turn your back for 5 minutes.

maddy68 · 24/04/2023 16:08

Tangerines and bananas

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/04/2023 17:28

Apples, satsumas/clementines, grapes, strawberries - U.K. only in season. Bananas only when Gdcs are visiting.

An occasional pineapple, melon or mango.
Lots of cherries - fat black juicy U.K. grown ones from M&S, when in season.

None of it is ever wasted.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/04/2023 17:37

I love strawberries and raspberries but they're not fruit bowl or snacking fruit. I buy them once a week when they're in season and I serve them as a pudding, with cream or ice cream. I think of them as too special for any other treatment, probably a hangover from childhood.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/04/2023 17:41

Frozen mango is good, btw.

I'm fond of pineapple but what a faff it is to prepare a fresh pineapple, and how difficult it is to tell if it's ripe or overripe. I've occasionally left one too long and found it was inedible, which is annoying, as I hate wasting food. It's expensive to buy ready prepared pineapple but I do that sometimes as it's just so much easier. I will admit to enjoying tinned pineapple too. Many fruits are good tinned - peaches, pears, pineapple, apricots. Useful standbys.

Fandabedodgy · 24/04/2023 17:45

Bananas and strawberries always get eaten

If I think fruit it's getting towards being too ripe I chuck it in the blender and make it into smoothies or milkshakes

That saves wastage

mischlerischler · 24/04/2023 17:45

Bananas - always need to have these as I add them to my breakfast
Raspberries / blueberries
Watermelon
Frozen mango
Grapes - probably the only fruit that goes off in our household (I love them frozen if I remember to put them in the freezer)
Apples - they are for our dog so they are always eaten Grin

HappyTrance · 24/04/2023 17:46

Wow that’s a lot of fruit some people are having!

I like the prepared fruit in little tubs but I’ve stopped buying them as they are expensive and they can go a bit slimy if you don’t eat them on the day.

HappyTrance · 24/04/2023 17:46

Unfortunately I’m not keen on smoothies but dc likes them so we could use up the fruit that way.

When fruit starts to go, I either make fruit salad or a smoothie or muffins. It tastes better in a blender or a pan withother ingredients. I used to waste fruit but now everything gets used.

I also will cut up fruit and put it on the table - it gets eaten pretty fast.
