What fruit actually gets eaten in your household?

When I buy fruit I find too much of it gets wasted if we don’t eat it straight away.

It’s only me and one teenager at home and I try not to waste food but this week I threw out some strawberries which went mouldy and the bananas went brown before we ate them. We also had blueberries and avocados this week and did eat them. It doesn’t help that neither of us particularly like fruit but I buy it to make sure my dc gets a balanced diet or they would be living on chips.

What fruit do you buy and what do you eat or end up throwing away?

Bananas
Apples
Grapes

Get snacked on or used in breakfast. The others only get eaten if served up as a desert.

Thearex · 23/04/2023 23:01

Apples, so many apples.
Grapes.
Melon- especially any orange fleshed ones.

I have discovered bananas are purposely left as when they turn brown they become banana cake.

Cherry tomatoes-not fruit ...but technically a fruit I suppose. A punnet of baby plum tomatoes lasts about 20mins.

Oranges, pears, plums & kiwi are not popular.

DC eat £60 of strawberries and blueberries a month. They aren’t left long enough to go off in this house. But apples can and do go mouldy so I tend to only a few

Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries all get eaten at breakfast.

Apples, satsumas, grapes and bananas for snacks. Sometimes mango or melon. Very occasionally a kiwi.

The last few grapes sometimes end up in the bin. The bananas go brown sometimes but we freeze for banana bread or smoothies so not wasted.

shelbaba · 23/04/2023 23:06

Everyone drives me mad with fruit because they seem to change what fruit they decide to scoff every week.

So for example the kids were eating a lot of apples and my dh always takes one to work so 6 weren't enough. So I bought the usual 6pk and a bag of smaller ones for the kids. They haven't touched them and I'm saying do u not want an apple when they are asking for fruit. Eldest said I don't like them 🤦🏻‍♀️ since when, today!

Generally bananas always get eaten, apples (if just the 6pk) grapes and sweetclems. Again I bought 2 packs grapes one week n the extra pack went in the bin. The week before it was done within 2 days of shopping being delivered. The strawberries, no one is bothering with last 2 packs have basically gone in the bin.

I've stopped buying blueberries, my eldest used to love them but apparently not any more. She did ask for me for cherries at the wkend so I'll get them. I love cherries so I'll eat them if she doesn't.

We all love melon but it needs to be in season and ripe.

Oranges were a hit this wkend.

ODFOx · 23/04/2023 23:07

Grapes and small pears always get eaten.
If I buy a punnet of plums or nectarines I sometimes have to poach the last one or two to prevent waste.
Berries rarely make it as far as the fridge.

Jellybean23 · 23/04/2023 23:08

If you aren't going to eat all the strawberries promptly, cut them into quarters , place in a dish and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Stir to evenly distribute the sugar. The juices run and dissolve the sugar so the fruit is in a syrup and the strawberries don't go mouldy. Refrigerate and use within two days.

Puppers · 23/04/2023 23:11

I've stopped buying bananas as nobody eats them anymore. We go through tons of berries (blueberries, raspberries and strawberries in season). Also plums, kiwi, watermelon. Apples usually go down well enough but aren't anybody's first choice.

It's bloody expensive. I don't rate frozen fruit unless it's being cooked, so everything is bought fresh. Still, I'm glad they will eat it.

APurpleSquirrel · 23/04/2023 23:20

Apples, easy peel oranges, grapes are the main ones. Strawberries & raspberries when in season. I buy bananas & make banana bread if they go brown before being eaten.
Occasionally Watermelon & honeydew melon, pineapple.
Always have lemons in, occasionally limes if needed for a recipe.

saltandpepper86 · 23/04/2023 23:26

We eat a lot more veg than fruit.

I buy bananas and grapes often but the bananas only get used for Banana Bread! Grapes are popular though

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/04/2023 23:26

DH eats grapes. None of the rest of us eat any fruit at all, so none is wasted

ilovesushi · 23/04/2023 23:33

The only apples that get eaten are ones that are very crunchy. Pink Ladies are a safe bet. Anything remotely yellow or soft will be left. Very crunchy pears will get eaten. Bananas that have just turned yellow. They can still have that unripe bitterness to them. Kiwis as long as they aren't mushy in any way. Raspberries and blackberries but no mushy ones. I have two teenagers and I have to literally hand them a piece of fruit or they wouldn't eat it at all. In summer I make lots of smoothies with frozen raspberries, banana and yoghurt. Grapes and citrus fruits get ignored.

bluechameleon · 23/04/2023 23:39

The only fruit that really gets thrown away here is satsumas, because the DC go through unpredictable phases of eating loads/none. I buy bananas, grapes and blueberries every week, then usually either kiwis or satsumas plus one or two others out of strawberries, pineapple, watermelon, raspberries, melon, blackberries. Then usually one that only I like e.g. apples, plums, nectarines, persimmons, figs. I eat a lot of fruit, DC eat a moderate amount and DH eats none.

HappiDaze · 23/04/2023 23:43

If apples aren't eaten in time I make crumble from them or if bananas aren't eaten then I make banana cake. Berries can go in muffins.

DelurkingAJ · 23/04/2023 23:44

Apples, DSs (7 and 10) eat at least one a day each. Bananas usually three or four each a week (I freeze them if they go too brown and defrost in the microwave when making banana bread…look foul, taste great). A couple of punnets of grapes (DS1), any berries I buy (I’m stingy and only usually buy them in season) are inhaled by DS2 (DH and I like them too so he does have to share!). I like tinned peaches and pineapple so buy both. I adore ripe pears but rarely find them. And satsumas when I’m season also vanish.

HappiDaze · 23/04/2023 23:45

Bananas will go in smoothies with any berries but we mainly use frozen berries for smoothies

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/04/2023 23:48

Bananas
Raspberries
Strawberries
Blueberries
Apples
Nectarines

Anything that looks like it's about to turn gets added to a tub in the freezer, I have one for berries, one for bananas and one for other.

Bananas can be quickly blitzed and turn into instant banana icecream which DD loves.

The tub with apples, nectarines, plums etc end up being used for crumbles and pies.

The tub with berries is used for smoothies or to go in porridge.

Serenity45 · 24/04/2023 00:31

We usually buy
Apples, pears, oranges/clementines, bananas, grapes, plums, kiwis

Sometimes get blueberries, or raspberries and strawberries when in season also occasionally watermelon or honeydew melon if we fancy it. I'm lazy and do like pre chopped mango as a treat too.

Very rarely waste any as we both snack on fruit and also like home made fruit salad with yoghurt and perhaps granola

Saschka · 24/04/2023 00:41

Apples, raspberries, blackberries. Strawberries if they are with ice cream, but otherwise get eaten very slowly and often go off.

Tangerines will be left 90% of the time, but then sometimes DS will eat 3 in a row or something. Grapes are the same - he either eats the entire packet, or none at all.

Prepped fruit like mango chunks or watermelon slices goes if I actually put it in front of DS (or if I buy it myself for lunch), but if it sits in the fridge we forget about it. Actually, we had some mango and watermelon fingers at DS’s 6th birthday, and surprisingly all the kids wolfed them, even before the crisps and popcorn.

I personally like an apricot or plum, DS isn’t bothered. I know DS eats pears, kiwis etc as part of free school fruit.

None of us eat bananas. Or “weird” fruit like star fruit, dragon fruit, custard apples, persimmons - we occasionally pick them up for a bit of variety, but none of us really like them.

RoseMartha · 24/04/2023 00:52

Melon
Strawberries
Raspberries
Blueberries
Grapes

I also buy mixed frozen fruit that I eat .

caringcarer · 24/04/2023 00:54

Fresh raspberries, melon, apples, grapes, a few oranges and by the end of June punnets and punnets of fresh English strawberries.

caringcarer · 24/04/2023 00:55

Bananas too.

mathanxiety · 24/04/2023 00:59

Frozen fruit - it goes in smoothies, muffins, pies. I currently have 2lbs of frozen blueberries in search of a blueberry pie...
Bananas - some are eaten fresh, the rest are frozen for banana bread/ muffins/ pancakes.
Apples - eaten fresh, used in pies and muffins, used in savoury dishes.

I really only buy bananas and apples fresh.

Fraaahnces · 24/04/2023 01:00

At my house, the first 10-20 grapes, then the rest become mouldering raisins. Half a punnet of strawberries/ any other berries before they’re mouldy. Apples sit in the fruit bowl until they resemble Mahatma Ghandi in his latter years and citrus is basically a still life. I’m so over trying to feed these monsters healthy food. If I had chickens, I would have the best eggs from the scraps of all the healthy foods the herd insist they will eat “this time” that ends up being chucked out. (No desire to look after the feathery, flappy, shitting things though.)

mathanxiety · 24/04/2023 01:01

Nearly forgot Texas pink grapefruit at Christmas/ New Years (US). Pink grapefruit are delicious.
