What fruit actually gets eaten in your household?

When I buy fruit I find too much of it gets wasted if we don’t eat it straight away.

It’s only me and one teenager at home and I try not to waste food but this week I threw out some strawberries which went mouldy and the bananas went brown before we ate them. We also had blueberries and avocados this week and did eat them. It doesn’t help that neither of us particularly like fruit but I buy it to make sure my dc gets a balanced diet or they would be living on chips.

What fruit do you buy and what do you eat or end up throwing away?

Bananas, Easy Peelers, Raspberries & Blueberries. Anything else usually sits there and goes off, so we rarely buy anything else.

VivienneDelacroix · 24/04/2023 01:32

My children are aged between 7 - 14.
A lot of fruit gets eaten in our house, so on a weekly basis we buy:
Bananas, apples, kiwi, grapes, raspberries, strawberries, pineapple, watermelon, and cantaloupe. All gets eaten well before it goes off. We also sometimes buy mango, nectarines, satsumas, pears, and blueberries. I can't think of a fruit that doesn't get eaten.

Fresh pineapple and mango chunks

But they have to be pre prepared

I buy fruit and cut it as soon as I've bought it so it's easier to use. We have a plate of fruit after dinner every night. I live overseas so things like pineapple, mango, dragon fruit, jambu, and watermelon are ones I buy often. I buy strawberries and grapes if I can get decent ones without too many airmiles, apples sometimes, bananas if I can find the baby ones and they're not too ripe as we don't eat them quickly. We only have oranges around Chinese new year.

Anything that doesn't get eaten in time gets left out for birds/squirrels.

Jazz apples, Granny Smith apples, bananas, mixed grapes every week
Cox's Orange Pippins in the autumn when they're in season
Conference pears ditto - I find both Cox's and pears too variable out of season
Satsumas as often as I can get them when in season, 'easy peelers' sometimes at other times, but satsumas are my favourite citrus fruit
Oranges if I think they're going to be good - no point in buying them when a bit dry and tasteless
Strawberries only when British ones are in season
Raspberries ditto
Blueberries occasionally, ditto melon
For cooking I always have lemons in the fridge, and often limes.

We like fruit. Never any difficulty getting it eaten. If the bananas are getting a bit overripe I make a banana loaf or similar. They can also be frozen.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/04/2023 07:09

Forgot to say that in summer I also buy peaches or nectarines most weeks and sometimes plums and cherries. I prefer to buy seasonally as much as possible where that's relevant.

SamMil · 24/04/2023 07:11

We tend to eat:
Apples (last ages in fridge)
Bananas (put them in the fridge once ripe)
Strawberries
Raspberries (have to eat quickly or they go mouldy!)
Satsumas (last ages in fridge)
Grapes

Seesawmarjorydaw · 24/04/2023 07:17

Apples and grapes get eaten.
will only buy fresh raspberries/ strawberries/peaches/plums if in season.

melon goes quickly.
bananas are sometimes devoured, sometimes ignored.

orangeflags · 24/04/2023 07:21

Apples and bananas here. I leave a bowl of apples out in the kitchen and I'll eat one randomly through the day rather than biscuits

Okunevo · 24/04/2023 07:27

Is this a bit of a wind up? Throwing out strawberries and blueberries? I buy strawberries in summer when they are on offer and at their best. Blueberries only frozen.

I regularly buy what we eat, apples, pears and plums in season, strawberries and cherries in season, bananas, pineapple, grapefruit, avocado, tomatoes.

dogglebox · 24/04/2023 07:32

Bananas, strawberries and grapes. Melon and pineapple but only if I chop it up and put it in a tub in the fridge (no dc here just me who eats fruit)

MyMachineAndMe · 24/04/2023 07:32

If we could afford it, my dc would eat a whole range of fruit. We actually only buy the cheapest and smallest apples though I do occasionally get frozen fruit. We have a plum tree in the garden and they love them when they're in season. Same with the rhubarb, though we usually use that for crumbles, and we pick the raspberries, blackberries and other fruit when it's available and free!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/04/2023 07:35

Bananas
Blueberries
Raspberries
Apples
Frozen mixed berries
Mango
Melon

Beetrootlover82 · 24/04/2023 07:38

It would be easier for me to list the fruits that aren’t eaten in this house.

I reckon about 40% of my budget on fruit. Children inhale blueberries like they’re going out of fashion. And I’m an organic obsessive.
Definitely no grapefruit though 😷

Theelephantinthecastle · 24/04/2023 07:42

We have the opposite problem with fruit - go through ridiculous quantities of it.

I think some of it is about habit - growing up, our fruit bowl was always on the dining table and straight after a meal, we would always have a piece or two and sit and chat. I never really snack on fruit, just have a piece after every meal.

cptartapp · 24/04/2023 07:57

Only DH really eats fruit. Apples, grapes, bananas, pineapple occasionally. I occasionally make myself have a banana.
Teen DS only eat fruit, usually berries, if I pair it up with a cake type pudding and plonk it in front of them. Otherwise never.
They eat tons of veg though as do I.

TheExistentialistCafé · 24/04/2023 07:58

Most of them. The only ones that go old are pears, but then I bake a pear tart with them, so no waste.

TheGirlWhoLived · 24/04/2023 08:01

We buy apples, satsumas, bananas, strawberries, blueberries and grapes each week. Also frozen mango and pineapple. Generally it all gets eaten bar the odd banana or apple that lingers. We go through about 4 packs of satsumas!

AuntieMarys · 24/04/2023 08:02

Mine hoovered up fruit as teenagers...dd had an expensive mango habit.
Dh and I eat fruit daily.....banana, apple, satsuma, blueberries daily. Strawberries, plums and raspberries when in season. Never throw any away.

lljkk · 24/04/2023 08:07

We decide what to eat based on what needs eating before it goes off. All the fruit gets eaten.

gingercat02 · 24/04/2023 08:07

Apples oranges pears bananas plums/nectarines every week. Most gets eaten. Berries when they are in season. Occasional melon or pineapple or grapes for a change.

We all like fruit so thats easier

SinnerBoy · 24/04/2023 08:09

This week I bought:

Mangoes
Avocados
Apples
Tangerines
Bananas
Strawberries.

There's still a mango left, I must eat it before my daughter notices, as I only get to suck the remnants of the seed, usually....

userxx · 24/04/2023 08:11

raspberries (put a handful in a glass of white wine!

My kind of fruit 🍷

He seriously only eats fruit?

that sounds a pretty dire diet. No veg? Dairy? Protein? What’s his energy like? His bowels must be very active?!!

Beetrootlover82 · 24/04/2023 08:11

Oh sorry I misunderstood!!
