What does Sunday dinner look like for you?

We are in a different time zone, so ahead of the uk. Sunday dinner is an important ritual in our house, but takes lots of different forms as we live in a hot climate.
It's cooler today, so we have pork shoulder on the bbq, cabbage and bacon, stuffing (from home), baked apples, green beans, roast potatoes and gravy. Followed by cheese.
DH and I are sat outside with a drink and nibble, next to the BBQ, whilst I watch a BBC documentary on trading scams! DSS is sleeping after early morning football, but will be about soon in the hunt for snacks.
How is everyone else's Sunday lunch / dinner looking?

I normally do a roast dinner on a Sunday but not always. I'm going to just do a simple dinner today. Chicken, potatoes, veg and gravy. Sometimes I make more effort with it and do Yorkshire puddings, cauliflower cheese, stuffing etc.

I am a very big Sunday dinner fan. I make one pretty much every week, unless we have plans which isn’t often! And even if I don’t do it on a Sunday I’ll usually carry it over to the Monday 🥰 I enjoy making them, it’s no bother for me! Usually cook a chicken, or sometimes a beef joint. Odd times we’ll have Toad in the Hole for a change! I do all the trimmings, onion gravy, good selection of veg, ALWAYS homemade yorkshire puds.

We’re going out for Sunday dinner today because it’s our first wedding anniversary but will still be having a roast!

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 23/04/2023 09:17

Roast dinner most Sundays here, today it's roast chicken, roast potatoes, roast Carrots, broccoli, homemade Yorkshire puddings, stuffing and gravy

I am in between roast chicken mixed veg, roast spuds Yorkshire pudding s swimming in gravy

Or

Chicken tikkia masala with lightly seasoned basmati rice with garlic and coriander naan bread.

We are still celebrating eid and have celebrations, Ferrero rochers, icecream to get through too:)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/04/2023 09:21

A roast, maybe once in 3 weeks, but now and then I’ll do one midweek, too. I don’t usually do Yorkshires, just joint or chicken and lots of roast potatoes, plenty of veg and proper gravy, made in the roasting tin.

mbosnz · 23/04/2023 09:28

We tend to do something on the barbie at lunch, so today it's burgers. And then for dinner, we're having DH's chicken casserole, which is all kinds of gorgeous, with a shit load of vegetables in it, and served on rice. I love it!

Dithyramb · 23/04/2023 09:30

Don’t you find it restricts what you can do on Sunday, those who have it as a regular thing, whether in the middle of the day or in the evening?

hulahoopqueen · 23/04/2023 09:35

I'm having my baby shower today early afternoon, so it'll be a slow cooker dinner! Chicken legs, carrots and parsnips, will then remove about half the chicken legs and cool/shred them for sandwiches in the week.
I hope DH will do dumplings to accompany; he's fantastic at them.

AllIeveknewonlyou · 23/04/2023 09:39

Lentil, vegetable and potato soup, fresh bread with mozzarella

Blamunge · 23/04/2023 09:39

When I was a kid my family always had a Sunday roast. Cooked by Mum and Gran of course, while the men were out having a couple of lunchtime pints, then back home to find their dinner on the table.

Personally I will not entertain this shit. I’m not cooking a full roast on a Sunday, it’s my day of rest. In fact I cook less on Sunday than on a normal day. People will get a sandwich for lunch and a pizza for dinner if they’re lucky.

I suppose it was a more palatable situation when the men worked all week and the women were at home every day, so they didn’t mind so much that they were cooking on a Sunday because they didn’t have to go to work on Monday. But now that women work too, everyone can fuck off if they think we’re cooking on a Sunday!

OhFFSthisAgain · 23/04/2023 09:40

We don't have a roast dinner every week on the same day like I had growing up we tend to just have them in the autumn/winter, and just randomly when fancy one. It would be chicken/pork, carrots, broccoli/green beans, mashed swede, sometimes stuffing, roast pots/leek mash, with caramelised onion gravy and Yorkshire puds. We like most Condiments too.
Pigs in blanket and honey parsnips we love too, but is something we would have for Christmas only.

OhFFSthisAgain · 23/04/2023 09:42

'. But now that women work too, everyone can fuck off if they think we’re cooking on a Sunday!'

Couldn't agree more, and I'm just a SAHM, looking after little dcs is hard enough though! Sod that 😂

Ringmaster27 · 23/04/2023 09:44

I’ll usually do roast chicken on a Sunday, with roasties, whatever veg I’ve got in the freezer, stuffing, Yorkshire puddings, gravy.
It’s just me and 3 DCs, so we have a lot of leftover chicken and I’ll use that to make something for Monday night - curry or a pie usually.
But today with have plans with my parents, so we’ll probably be freezer diving when we get home 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

PermanentTemporary · 23/04/2023 09:44

Dh and I used to do Sunday roasts for years but I have become increasingly allergic to food-based rituals. Now that dh is dead and ds has gone to uni I feel bloody liberated from having any particular food at any particular time. I'm moving in with dp next year and am already not 100% delighted at the thought of possible compulsory meals. At least dp doesn't eat meat so won't go on about roasts specifically.

Polis · 23/04/2023 09:45

We are having roast chicken today with all the trimmings. We don’t have a roast every week and hardly at all in the summer.

It is a bit of a faff but my husband cooks on the other days so he gets a day off.

Refrosty · 23/04/2023 09:46

My husband and kids hate roast poultry, so that was that. Today, I'm feeding us fried chicken, Mac n cheese (baked), salad and corn on the cob. Maybe coleslaw if I can be bothered. A deviation from my Caribbean Sunday roasts growing up, but everyone will eat it.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 23/04/2023 09:47

We love a roast here but I can’t be arsed to cook one today so I’m going to roast the chicken I bought and we’ll have it with some new potatoes and some sides I got from M&S (Waldorf salad, cous cous and something else I can’t remember).

whattodo2019 · 23/04/2023 09:48

My DH and I are on the Fast 800 keto diet .. Ot looks very different. Lunch is usually around 350 calories. Soup, yogurt (with protein powder, seeds and berries) or an omelette. Sadly being a Sunday it doesn't make any difference.

Pahpahpotato · 23/04/2023 09:50

Today it’s a roast beef dinner at my mums place. Always nice to go back to the family farm. We’ll eat too much then try and walk it off this afternoon by checking stock without the quads. I expect this will be in vain as mum always bakes extra cakes and biscuits for a ‘post dinner snack’.
I tend to only do a Sunday roast during the winter months as DH isn’t home much the rest of the year (we’re farmers too) and I think it seems daft to do a whole roast for just me and one DC.

Peridot1 · 23/04/2023 09:55

We don’t always have a roast but more often than not. Today it’s roast pork, roast potatoes, fennel and chorizo stuffing, red cabbage and green beans. Maybe Yorkshires too as DS likes them.

We always have it in the evening. DH usually cooks it. We find it quite an easy dinner really.

RoseMartha · 23/04/2023 10:21

Whatever I feel like cooking. I am more likely to do a roast in the week.

reluctantbrit · 23/04/2023 10:26

We often do complicated curries from scratch on Sundays if we don't want a roast.

GiBlues · 23/04/2023 10:30

My mum just came out of hospital this week so parents are coming over for a full roast dinner.
slow cooked brisket in gravy
roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, carrots, peas, parsnips, cauliflower and maybe a couple of pigs in blankets if I have some in the freezer.
Although some of the suggestions here some delicious!

Decafflatteplease · 23/04/2023 10:57

Love a proper Sunday dinner and we have one most weeks. Not always a roast though but something a bit more special than our usual Mon - Fri meals. Tonight is slow cooker lasagne I need to get it on in a minute .

I don't find roasts a faff we keep them simple, meat in slow cooker, frozen roasties and Yorkshire's in the air fryer, simple veg.

We are generally home on Sundays apart from church, Saturday tends to be our day out.

Sunday dinner is a bit more of a big deal than in the week, we all discuss plans for the week etc and usually have some sort of pudding.

Then baths with a gin and my waterproof kindle for me and early nights all round and always fresh pyjamas on a Sunday!
