cheap stuff is better than posh stuff

Not just better considering it's cheap but you actually think is superior?

I used to buy clothes detergent pods etc, not I use bargain own brand powder and it's great. Likewise own brand washing up liquid I think is better than fairy and co.

Big tubs of hair mask for four quid always seem better than posh conditioner I sometimes buy.

How about you? What are your bargains?

Lidl nappies and Sainsbury's own brand baby wipes

ShagratandGorbag4ever · 23/04/2023 23:44

I'm with the Fawlty Towers guest who rejected mayonnaise and demanded proper salad cream out of a bottle.

BocolateChiscuits · 23/04/2023 23:56

The fruit and veg stall on my high St. It's far cheaper, the fruit and veg often is better, and although the range of stock is limited on any paticular day, they change what they sell all the time, so it's always quite exciting to see what they've got in.

Last year for some reason u couldn't get Richmond frozen sausages so u just grabbed a bag of tescos 20 pack bag for just over a quid, butchers choice. Turns out the kids loved them more, they were less less than half price or the Richmond and you got 20 not 12 pack bag. So never changed from tesco ones since. Unfortunately I will always use fairy liquid it lasts longer for us. I rarely ever buy branded biscuits or snacks anymore as swapped to aldi, lidls ones for the kids just out of curiosity during covid time to see wether they still ate them. Apparently they did and still do and never even seemed to notice there cheaper brand.

EmmaEmerald · 24/04/2023 00:39

Aldi Norpak
best butter ever and nicer than the Lurpak my mum likes and that is twice the price -ish!

Ladysaurus · 24/04/2023 00:51

Spaghetti hoops. The cheapest ones. Normally about 16p.

I find the more expensive and branded ones too sweet. The cheap ones have the tomato tang. 🤤

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 24/04/2023 00:54

My 50p tin opener from Asda works better than the fancy one I had before.

Aldi Titan Bars - knock-off Mars Bars and nicer than the original.

I agree about washing powder: less convenient, maybe, but much better at cleaning.

Also agree that the “plain” originals of food are much nicer. But my dcs say that’s a sign I’m an old person Grin

Agree about Aldi Titan bars. Haven't even tried them myself but gave them to my Scout group (35 young people) and said "I didn't have time to go to get proper mars bars so sorry you have got these, and I am sure they are probably similar" and got an almost unanimous "not similar, far better !"

PerryMenno · 24/04/2023 01:58

Aldi, Uniqlo and Ikea are my go-to places for the majority of things in life.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 24/04/2023 02:03

M&S tomato ketchup is miles better than Heinz. Tastes like real tomatoes. And it is half the price.

GarlicGrace · 24/04/2023 02:06

Joining the cheer for Aldi's Moser Roth chocolate bars 😋

Nivea Soft cream's fantastic. Comes in a big pot that you can find for under a fiver. I've been using it for hands & body since the 90s and, now I'm old, it's doing a great job on my face & neck too.

I've just spent my entire clothes budget (it wasn't much) at Shein, Boohoo and New Look. Never done this before - I had to stop spending on proper good quality years ago but, since then, have bought a limited number of items in the best quality I can afford. Decided I'm bored with myself and need an update, and the only way I can do that is by going downmarket! Tbh, it's been enormous fun. I suddenly understand why The Young People keep buying 'disposable fashion' even though they probably shouldn't.

StandingMyGround888 · 24/04/2023 02:10

Got some great cotton maxi dresses from Primark that have lasted ages and are much better quality than things I've bought 5x the price and better fabric.

Bugger, now I've got Primark envy Grin

Yes! The Asda essentials ones are the best, however the Lidl simply ones are not good at all

Zippedydoo123 · 24/04/2023 04:23

Nive a face cleansers and moisture creams. I actually find them superior to Elemis!!

liveforsummer · 24/04/2023 05:23

Aldi concentrated washing liquid - great, smells lovely, is £2 something for a big bottle. Aldi sliced cheddar - tasty, separates easily unlike the more expensive slices that all stick together. Supermarkets budget range cheddar always melts the best for cheese on toast etc too

LemonjeIIo · 24/04/2023 08:09

Tesco Gold label teabags. A very good alternative to Yorkshire tea for about £1.70 for 80 bags

LadyMuckingabout · 24/04/2023 08:55

Asda extra-special ground coffee: much nicer than posher brands. I fear others have discovered this tho as there’s often been a grab on strength 4 ! Has to be the extra special, however, as I tried the Asda ordinary one and it was like a cup of week-old re-heated coffee ☹️

KnittingNeedles · 24/04/2023 09:04

I agree on things like washing powder - but we are in a very soft water area which makes a huge difference.

With food products it's so much a matter of taste, "better" is a subjective term. We are open to trying all the different brands, from all the different supermarkets.

BusterGonads · 24/04/2023 09:12

Danikm151 · 21/04/2023 20:14

Aldi’s teddy faces taste better than pom bears!

Yes to this.
I prefer their racer bars to Snickers, and the lasagne from Aldi and Lidl is gorgeous, knocks spots off the other brands.

AwaaFaeHom · 24/04/2023 09:16

Tesco used to do an amazing version of Caramel Rocky Biscuits. Sooo much nicer. Sadly I haven't seen them for a couple of years - but I haven't gone back to Rocky. They taste of sadness and loss now

Cumberlover76 · 24/04/2023 09:20

Aldi yeast spread is lovely, if you're a marmite lover obvs! It's so much cheaper than Marmite and we like it better in our house.

Badbudgeter · 24/04/2023 09:23

Aldi Prosecco, hobnobs and washing powder.

NeedWineNow · 24/04/2023 09:32

Oh where do I start??? These are my Always Buys

Aldi

Dark chocolate digestives
0% Greek yoghurt in the pink/white tin
Moser Roth chocolate
Hand cooked cheese & onion crisps
Quilted toilet roll
Saxon Ultra kitchen rolls
Part-baked baguette
Raisin wheats, bran flakes, porridge sachets
instant coffee
dishwasher tablets
Their version of Ryvita crackers

The meat, cheese and fish/seafood are all good as well.

Lidl's bakery is excellent.

MonumentalLentil · 24/04/2023 09:32

I use unscented versions of household stuff and find that mostly the own brand are better than the more expensive versions (wouldn't call them posh though). Exceptions to this is Sainsbury w/up liquid which was fine and then suddenly smelt of a nasty scent.

Never buy Heinz which is certainly not posh, prefer own brand beans, ketchup, actually the only Heinz item I buy is salad cream and that is a rarity these days. Heinz is overpriced shite now.
