I don't mean upper middle at least a few million. What's life like what staff do you have? What's your daily routine like? How do you earn your money investments etc. Being nosey.

I get that.

So if your house is worth £950k and you own it outright, and you had £70k cash - would you be classified a millionaire?

Or do you have to have a million in the bank? Some people can be asset rich but cash poor - are these people still millionaires?

I'm just asking/curious. Hadn't thought of it before. As house prices go up and up - many of us may legitimately be able to call ourselves millionaires at some point in our life.

So you have 100% equity then yes by some standard you are millionaire already. You can take out some equity which is rather easy to do. This obviously depends on your current income and your age as to how much you can take out the house.

But there’s a lot of boomers that are multimillionaires and cannot afford to upkeep the house/ heating. On my street there are a lot of them. This winter my partner had to go to help an old lady to cut some burning logs 🪵 for her to help her to heat up her house !! Her house is valued at 5.5 mío. For example. It makes me her kids are just watching this happen I would take all of them off her will!!

May I ask why you don’t want a cleaner?
Isn’t the point of working so hard about trying to gain a bit more time and freedom to do things you love and enjoy. If you tell me you absolutely love cleaning then that’s your prerogative.

For me I outsource everything I can so I can focus my time on 1. Earning more money and 2. Spend more quality time with my family and friends. 3. Focus on myself and bettering my hobby / enrichment

We don’t have one as we don’t like strangers in the house.
We also don’t like people knowing our business.

We re quite private

Lvb7533 · 21/04/2023 17:26

Yes that is true and has played on my mind previously. However with the investments we have made - an equal amount in my name - plus pensions etc, then I'm still completely financially secure.

plus I can always start my own business. I'd quite like to do that anyway as I get older. 😀

SnowyGiveAway · 21/04/2023 17:26

I'm rich! Today is payday, and I am rich rich rich today 🎉 I will be significantly less rich in 30 days time.

Meh. I'm really happy though 😁

They are not strangers. They are employees. We got motion cameras and cameras setup everywhere. I get that it is hard to find trustworthy people (and trust me I’ve lost some expensive jewelleries in the past which I luckily claimed back via insurance) but it’s about first investing time to find the right one then you will find freedom. Like I said my cleaner I can trust her to spend all her time in my house. And I am lucky on that front.

Pertinentowl · 21/04/2023 17:30

I think I am. I say think because it’s family money on my husbands side and he doesn’t know how much and we have everything given to us. He doesn’t work, the businesses they own put money in the accounts and that’s how it seems to work.
my father in law passed away, and before that he was head of the family and it was like he gave us stuff. I was expecting that to end when he passed away but it seems to be still happening?
Its causing me a hell of a lot of stress. It’s been two years and there’s still no probate or whatever it’s called in English. I keep telling my husband he needs to find out how much he has so we can plan, I want to get my kids through university. I was adamant that they get degrees so they don’t have to work for the family if they don’t want to and if they do they can do a decent enough job to ensure people aren’t out of a job. I go between trying to find out how to be responsible and trying to acknowledge that so far we have been given absolutely everything.
my husbands memory is going and frankly I do all the thinking but now my father in law is passed and everything is in my husbands name I don’t have access to documents and lawyers, I can’t be given power of attorney because in my country the fact that the money is now shared and the businesses are between siblings everyone looked at me like I’m mad when I suggested it.
Oh well. I have two out of four kids up to university, two in private school, properties- no idea how many till they are divided and three cars. None of them are fancy but I didn’t buy them. I am of course very lucky. If I want or need something it doesn’t require any thinking, I can get it.
It doesn’t matter how rich you are, you will always know someone richer. So will they. My area of the world has lots of people with all the things you would consider aspirational. But so far only one of my kids is into designer clothes and cars. I thought he’d grow out of it but he’s 19 and his crowd is wealthier than we are so.. that might take a while. They’ve all been sent to Uk for uni and it’s interesting to see whose coping and who just wants to come back and have everything done them.

MissLucyLiu · 21/04/2023 17:30

Let me get this straight so for all those who doesn’t have cleaners.. do you / or will you use a nanny? What is more important than a child ?

Millionaire is a word that has suffered from inflation. It was coined in the 19th century when owning a million’s worth of assets meant you were super-rich.

Now, half of London and the SE own properties worth a million, ok many have mortgages, but then many normal sized properties are worth 2-10 million+.

So a million’s worth of assets doesn’t mean you’re rich. A millionaire in the old sense would now be a multi-millionaire.

SybilWrites · 21/04/2023 17:32

it would be really good if a woman came on here having earned millions rather than her dp/dh.

Anyway, I went out with a super rich guy last year. It was a lot of fun!

Is he trying to hide this information so you don’t know enough in case you two get a divorce. So you haven’t signed a pre nup.

My partner gets a yearly director divident from his dads company that’s more than his current job.

Blimey I’m not rich but I have a cleaner and an ironing lady.

I dislike cleaning and am quite happy to be labelled lazy for not doing it.

I’m nouveau pauvre or posh poor as some of my friends call it. So I’ve gone the other way from riches to rags.

I grew up very rich but am not now I'm older. Nouveau pauvre has always been my descriptor of choice - this is the first time I've seen someone else use it.

Irregardless of my bank account, am still posh. Haha!

Completely. And if you don’t have investment assets that’s not locked up in your primary home then it’s not really rich either.

It’s got nothing to do with trust really.
We just like our privacy. Employees, strangers, staff….doesn’t really matter what they’re called they are still people in our personal space.

My partners old nanny still goes to the family villa in Greece every year with her kids. He’s now 35. They are now extended family lol. Initially I found this really weird but now when I see them recounting memories I see why.

It’s okay that you don’t understand. I can explain it to you…

Energy bills are the bills you receive for the energy that you use every month or every quarter. The more energy that you use, the more your energy bill will cost you.
Energy bills are not a tax. They are not linked to the amount of money that you earn every month or every quarter.
A much more reliable indication of your energy usage will be the size of your house.
Some very rich people live in small properties - for example, a one bedroom apartment overlooking the Thames.
Some very poor people live in big properties - for example, if they have many, many children and a low income.
My income is quite a lot, but my house isn’t a mansion.
My house probably isn’t that much bigger than your house, although I’m not sure because I don’t know anything about you.
We are very stingy with our energy use and also try to use our log burners wherever possible. We also have to use oil instead of gas, so my energy bill and your energy bill might not be directly comparable.
Oil is ordered and delivered by an oil supply company. It does not just come through pipes in the ground like your gas does.

I do not live a closeted life away from the rest of the world. My life and income and outgoings are also impacted by huge political changes such as Brexit and the war in Ukraine and because of changes like this, my energy bill has increased by an awful lot of money. In fact, keeping my family warm and keeping my lights on has more than doubled in the last 18 months. Like everyone else. And, like everyone else, I have noticed this.

Like everyone else, I do read my bills, check my bank statements and keep an eye on what money is coming in and going out.

Unlike everyone else, when my bills go up, I can afford to keep my family warm and keep my lights on. For that I am grateful. But nonetheless, my energy bills have increased and it has not gone unnoticed.

Please do let me know if there are any other areas of my spending that you are struggling to understand.

Maybe you really are rich. You certainly seem to have plenty of time on your hands.

Sorry please ignore me. I don’t understand people who got so much privacy that they are willing to waste that much time doing mundane chores. Unless you tell me you love cleaning it’s literally your hobby.

Yes, when browsing Rightmove it us notable that some of the madly expensive properties are very much taste free zones!

You want to try looking at mega yacht interiors.

I love property and yacht porn but I always want to redesign the interiors.
