I don't mean upper middle at least a few million. What's life like what staff do you have? What's your daily routine like? How do you earn your money investments etc. Being nosey.

Not what I'd call rich, but we unknowingly moved in next door to an ex professional footballer (not well known) now sports agent. He's obviously done well as the latter.

We always say we're next to the big white house. Their house is lit up and stands out on the road from a mile away.

They also have a LOT of glass. Great for being nosey. 😂

More recently we've realised the LV trunks are out for a week before the holiday ready for the holiday packing service they use. Hadn't clicked that one before. (2 x adults, 3 kids).
Weekly cleaners
Every holiday the painter goes in and repaints all the walls (we've used him he told us.)
Nanny
Every school holiday is a 5* long haul holiday.
The last kids party had a blow up igloo with a disco in it, giant inflatable footballs, entertainers and an icecream truck on the drive.
Window cleaners/gardners/people to do every maintenance job. They do nothing themselves.
Haven't see a chef though...

I wanted to get away from this shit. But actually we just look on, laugh and think good for them.

And I'll tell you what, his kids are gorgeous, polite and kind to each other.

Holiday packers what a fantastic idea , I hate packing for holidays.

I'm a bit uncomfortable about cleaners, so our housekeeper doesn't clean our bedroom and bathroom, we do. She batch cooks meals for the freezer, and usually prepares our evening meal on the days when she's in, which is really wonderful.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 21/04/2023 16:50

Scalottia · 21/04/2023 16:38

I agree, could never have a cleaner. I don't want people in my space and honestly I find it a bit lazy. Flame away but it's just my opinion, especially if one person isn't working full time.

Super rich friend of parents doesn’t have and never wanted a cleaner. She’s the sort that trained as a cordon bleu chef to cater for her DH’s business dinners which is quite common apparently. They’ve had homes all over UK and South of France and didn’t in theory need to worry about money. But weren’t huge spenders (him more than her). I think a charity was set up in his name when he died. Etc…

BlackeyedSusan · 21/04/2023 16:51

MissLucyLiu · 21/04/2023 16:49

May I ask why you don’t want a cleaner?
Isn’t the point of working so hard about trying to gain a bit more time and freedom to do things you love and enjoy. If you tell me you absolutely love cleaning then that’s your prerogative.

For me I outsource everything I can so I can focus my time on 1. Earning more money and 2. Spend more quality time with my family and friends. 3. Focus on myself and bettering my hobby / enrichment

I'm autistic and no-one touches my stuff!

and I am not that good at cleaning either.

Ah okay I get it.

I used to be that kid everything need to line up and I get very stressed when it doesn’t but yeah over my 20s everything changed as I lived in university it was chaos but also taking drugs helped.

I have a cleaner she’s literal godsend. She’s got OCD so her standard of cleaning is insane. I’ve been gatekeeping her years and give her big bonuses so she doesn’t get stolen by someone else lol.

To classify yourself as a millionaire - is that via assets or cash?

If you had a £950k house and 70k in the bank are you a millionaire?

Ladderback · 21/04/2023 16:55

I can't see how anyone would remark on their energy bills being £600 per month if they had millions in the bank. Mine are more than that in a very standard house on a very standard income.

WhatHoMarjorie · 21/04/2023 16:55

what's the point in having several million in the bank and only going on holiday every other year?

maybe that job exit? that’s really a stylist?

No. Do you own your house outright no mortgage.

FilthyRich · 21/04/2023 16:58

@MissLucyLiu , honey, I own the bank.

MissLucyLiu · 21/04/2023 17:00

*owe. Oh dear English is not my first language but go on

lechatnoir · 21/04/2023 17:00

@Happyhappyday similar to mine. Have a good few million in the bank, stocks, shares & investment, a big house, pension that waaaay exceeds our household income (and we both work FT) they take lots of holidays, have a cleaner/gardener and shop at Waitrose but otherwise fairly frugal. They wouldn't dream of spending ££££ on handbags or designer gear, eat out occasionally but at run of the mill places, could easily afford a driver when they go out but still just get a train/taxi although bus might be pushing it . My mum does the ironing and my dad cleans the cars, they go on walks, and visit NT places - nothing hugely out of the ordinary and also fairly commonplace in their circles/where they live. But they don't ever have to worry about money which is massive and just not something they consider - I'm sure they think we're on the breadline but we just live a more normal life on (distinctly) average salaries, live in a 3 bed semi and kids go to the local school and hope we can save enough for a summer holiday anywhere that isn't at home!

BlackeyedSusan · 21/04/2023 17:02

there is a big difference between having an income of a million and having investments of a million that you draw interest off as an income (probably not that much ?) and owning a house in an expensive area (bought when cheaper) that's worth a lot but not having that much income, because you would still need somewhere to live.

CurlewKate · 21/04/2023 17:03

@Felixss "
Th e Hyacinth Buckets are here. Class is an outdated construct designed to limit social mobility."

I absolutely agree. That doesn't make my comment that class and money are unrelated any less true. Not sure what Hyacinth Bucket has to do with it.

It’s okay that you don’t understand. I can explain it to you…

Energy bills are the bills you receive for the energy that you use every month or every quarter. The more energy that you use, the more your energy bill will cost you.
Energy bills are not a tax. They are not linked to the amount of money that you earn every month or every quarter.
A much more reliable indication of your energy usage will be the size of your house.
Some very rich people live in small properties - for example, a one bedroom apartment overlooking the Thames.
Some very poor people live in big properties - for example, if they have many, many children and a low income.
My income is quite a lot, but my house isn’t a mansion.
My house probably isn’t that much bigger than your house, although I’m not sure because I don’t know anything about you.
We are very stingy with our energy use and also try to use our log burners wherever possible. We also have to use oil instead of gas, so my energy bill and your energy bill might not be directly comparable.
Oil is ordered and delivered by an oil supply company. It does not just come through pipes in the ground like your gas does.

I do not live a closeted life away from the rest of the world. My life and income and outgoings are also impacted by huge political changes such as Brexit and the war in Ukraine and because of changes like this, my energy bill has increased by an awful lot of money. In fact, keeping my family warm and keeping my lights on has more than doubled in the last 18 months. Like everyone else. And, like everyone else, I have noticed this.

Like everyone else, I do read my bills, check my bank statements and keep an eye on what money is coming in and going out.

Unlike everyone else, when my bills go up, I can afford to keep my family warm and keep my lights on. For that I am grateful. But nonetheless, my energy bills have increased and it has not gone unnoticed.

Please do let me know if there are any other areas of my spending that you are struggling to understand.

I won £50 on premium bonds this month. Treated myself to an Easter egg and the rest I invested, as that's how the rich stay rich.

You being financially savvy, I am afraid there’s a lot of idiots out there who earns a lot of money yet still living paycheque to pay cheque. So for anyone who are not understanding their outgoings they will never be able to build wealth eyeroll.

Our house is a old 4 story Victoria house. As much as we think we are well off we are not about to waste energy for the sake it. For one environmentally it’s irresponsible. We do spend a lot of time/ thots around how to turn the house more energy efficient and zero carbon. For one we have built some new solar panels in the shed roof.

I think you need to have asset/cash that’s 1 mío.

so if your house is worth 1mio and you got 20% deposit so your equity is 200k.

I sussed it when you said he was a super rich client at the solicitor you were doing admin for. Like a super rich person with family money would marry an admin clerk from their solicitors office who grew up on a council estate.+ 😀

In two “super rich” families I worked for, the rich husbands married “working class” women. Interesting, all the children have married similarly rich, privately educated spouses to themselves.

I get that.

So if your house is worth £950k and you own it outright, and you had £70k cash - would you be classified a millionaire?

Or do you have to have a million in the bank? Some people can be asset rich but cash poor - are these people still millionaires?

I'm just asking/curious. Hadn't thought of it before. As house prices go up and up - many of us may legitimately be able to call ourselves millionaires at some point in our life.

Blimey I’m not rich but I have a cleaner and an ironing lady.

I dislike cleaning and am quite happy to be labelled lazy for not doing it.

I’m nouveau pauvre or posh poor as some of my friends call it. So I’ve gone the other way from riches to rags.
