Thread 7 - TalkLair: “In fact it’s an oblate spheroid”

Kucinghitam · 20/04/2023 20:05

Continuation of previous threads (thread 6).
The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Lucicle! How lovely to see you!

lucicle · 25/05/2023 22:06

Hello! Lovely to see you too.

MouseMinge · 25/05/2023 23:55

It's lovely to see you, lucicle. I met you about a million years ago back when was a monkey.

MouseMinge · 26/05/2023 00:02

I've started listening to a podcast series called Betwixt the Sheets which I came upon from another podcast series I listen to. It's history and sex and scandal and all manner of interesting stuff. I listened to an episode about a Victorian woman's diary/scrapbook which contained little swatches of all the outfits she wore and swatches from the outfits of friends and family as well. There's a book out about it that I absolutely must read.

Before that, I listened to an episode about the C-Word, how it became so taboo, and when it became the biggest baddest swear of all the swears. There was a wonderful professor of linguistics guesting and she talked about way back in the days of yore when there were people in a village with the same first name they'd be given a bi name, this was before formal surnames. I think that for quite a while I will be sitting in bed reading or at my laptop or knitting or ... and this particular name will come into my head and I will laugh every time it happens.

Belle Widecunt.

duc748 · 26/05/2023 00:56

HI, @lucicle , good to hear from you! 😀

MavisMcMinty · 26/05/2023 03:11

Well, I’m now on page 58 of the third novel in The Passage trilogy, and enjoying it very much, thanks for the recommendation, thread. x

MavisMcMinty · 26/05/2023 03:16

I have been waking up with horrendous ankle pain every morning - all sciatica-related I think/fear - so the last few nights have been taking 600mg ibuprofen before bed and it seems to be doing the trick, keeps the pain away for a bit longer. (I gather the standard ibuprofen dose in various European countries is 600mg rather than the UK’s 400mg, so am not dicing with death, at least not in that regard.)

Britinme · 26/05/2023 03:20

Sympathies for the ankle pain, @MavisMcMinty . I hobble a bit first thing in the morning but it wears off, thankfully.

I am on page 364 of book 2 of The Passage trilogy and enjoying it a lot so I second the thread recommendation.

MavisMcMinty · 26/05/2023 03:39

I want to share it with someone but macman has a suddenly deteriorating cataract and finds reading very hard atm, and I don’t know anyone else who likes this kind of thing. Maybe my 15 and 17-year old nephews would enjoy it.

SinnerBoy · 26/05/2023 03:51

Hi lucicle, how are you doing? Are you still active at The Other Place?

Sorry to hear of your sciatic woes, Mavis. Is there something in the air? My back has been nipping for a few days, my third day of no gym and I've got Tramadol in my bag today, just in case.

MavisMcMinty · 26/05/2023 03:58

Apparently by the age of 50, 50% of people have some form/level of spinal cord compression, although not all have symptoms. I’ve had sciatica since I retired in 2016, it’s normally well-controlled, but flared up 15 months ago when I got Covid and I have weird hangover effects from it still.

Hate it, it’s like having toothache of the whole leg, also getting horrible painful spasms in my foot that I have no control over, like an MS or CP spasm.

SinnerBoy · 26/05/2023 05:23

Yes, it's awful, isn't it? I first had a trapped nerve at 19, then nothing really bad until my motorbike accident. I've been doing my back exercises, but have a bunk which only just fits - I've been sleeping with my head in one corner, feet in the other.

Tricyrtis2022 · 26/05/2023 08:02

Very sorry to hear of the sciatica and other pains. I had sciatica for the first time last year, at 60, which came on after an afternoon spent up a wobbly ladder. It was awful and I had a weakness in one leg. My main client insisted I book in with a physio and he'd pay, so I did and they were great. They did all sorts of tests, massage, manipulation, gave me exercises to do and whatnot, but it took months to get better properly. Nerve pain is the absolute pits.

In better news, after another day at the potting bench I've potted on hundreds of young plants which will soon be going into various gardens, including here. Let there be colour and brightness!

lucicle · 26/05/2023 09:26

Hello, all.

No, I don't post in The Other Place any more.

Much sympathy to the people suffering back pain etc. It is really debilitating. I used to get it very badly until a wonderful chiropractor fixed me and so far (nearly twenty years on) no further problems.

I read The Passage ages ago and loved it - didn't know there were more so I will look them up!

SinnerBoy · 26/05/2023 09:31

lucicle · Today 09:26

No, I don't post in The Other Place any more.

I haven't been back since we came here in November (?). Some people dip in and leave a bit of news - darkhorse is terminally ill. I think it was bignose who said.

I don't miss it much now.

MouseMinge · 26/05/2023 09:39

I'm so glad that people are loving The Passage . It feels like I've introduced an old friend to other friends and everyone gets on like a house on fire. It also makes me want to read it all again.

SinnerBoy · 26/05/2023 09:46

Is The Passage the zombie apocalypse one?

Tricyrtis2022 · 26/05/2023 09:50

As The Passage is being applauded by so many, I must take a look.

I'm currently reading 'The Giver of Stars' by JoJo Moyes. Apparently there was an issue with plagiarism, but I'm enjoying the story nonetheless.

Tricyrtis2022 · 26/05/2023 09:52

I haven't been back since we came here in November

Same here, I prefer this place.

weaseleyes · 26/05/2023 10:18

Hello @lucicle! (Sibb as was.) I refuse to believe T is doing GCSEs, given she has only just been born.

Medee · 26/05/2023 11:14

Same. Nice to see you @lucicle - I've a feeling you'd stopped posting a long time ago so good to see you here.

(Former French courtesan in training here)

angelico53 · 26/05/2023 11:25

I don't think we ever corresponded, @lucicle but I remember the username from GUT way back and it was one of those I really liked. Used to get you mixed up with lusmeri, I think. Anyway, welcome!

angelico53 · 26/05/2023 11:30

Spiders in sheds.

They are taking over my potting shed (which really should be named without the -ting) with web tunnels and sheets of fibres. I have seen one of them - she was hiding under a glove on the bench and ran away at high speed. About the size of Shelob. Possibly a little smaller.

And spider legs appear from the tunnel entrances from time to time, ready to sting, paralyse and kill.

I've been thinking of vacuuming them all out, but it seems unkind. Is it bigoted of me to not want to share my space?

duc748 · 26/05/2023 11:43

I remember you, @lucicle, from the 'old, old place' (FU). I scarcely go there either nowadays. I was (still am, really) moto748.

And it seems every day I read this thread and I count my blessings for my good health fortune and relative lack of aches and pains.

CyanCrystalViolet · 26/05/2023 11:46

Hello @lucicle!

@angelico53 I read that as ‘spiders in shreds’ and was expecting to read something about a lawn mower. aren’t the spiders useful for keeping the flies/aphids in check?
