Thread 7 - TalkLair: “In fact it’s an oblate spheroid”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 6).
The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Several years ago, my DBro gave me a pair of Allbirds Loungers as a Christmas present. (I was somewhat startled, upon Googling, to find that what looked like a pair of woolly plimsolls cost £100.) What can I say - they're the most comfortable things I've ever worn, I wear them to work, I wear them on long haul flights, I've worn them on a 10-mile hike in the Dales, they go in the washing machine.

I'm even considering buying a few more colours.

I have very annoying wide-at-the-front, narrow-at-the-heel feet (triangular) so cannot wear anything that doesn't secure around the ankle. Any type of court shoes are like flip-flops on me. Am also prone to blisters with any new shoes, so custom made sounds like heaven.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2023 12:53

I have some All Birds trainers - they are worth the money.

I'm thinking of getting the Tree Breezers as a semi-smart option.

I am wedded to my Finn Comforts despite the cost - wide fit, arch support, some designs I like, and they last and last.

Same.

I have some AllBirds loungers which are fine once they’re on but they in an ideal world they’d be a bit looser. I also have some of their really basic wool trainers and I must give them another try but so far they come down too tightly at the toes and press down on my big toes. I should have sent them back but forgot. I also have some ridiculous orange sandals from them which I wear in the garden in the summer. They’re improbably light and very squidgy.

Kucinghitam · 24/05/2023 16:07

@artant If I recall correctly, it is recommended that you size up slightly with Allbirds. Mine are a half size larger than my usual (allowing for the complications of US to UK size conversion) and they fit pretty snugly; if I'd got my usual size they'd be tight.

CyanCrystalViolet · 24/05/2023 16:18

I’ve had some success with Puma Smash trainers which are unisex and quite wide. I bought a size up from my usual (from 4 to 5) and am starting to wonder if 5 is actually a more accurate size for me. I too suffer from narrow-heeled triangular-foot syndrome so my tendency has been to go for shoes that fit more snugly so the heel stays in place. My collection of beloved size 4 Timberlands now don’t feel roomy enough so may have to start replacing them.

artant · 24/05/2023 17:45

@Kucinghitam I think a size up in the AllBirds trainers would definitely have helped; the loungers are okay but just a bit tight to get on which is just down to my feet being wide, I think. I had to size down in the sandals as they were stupidly big. The randomness of all that is a bit annoying!

MouseMinge · 24/05/2023 22:13

I've had fun and games with sandals today. Like I said I ordered two pairs yesterday. The pair that I liked best aesthetically, crossed covering at the ankle, flatform, and little loop for the bit toe to go through, were a no-go around the ankle which makes me wonder who they'd be right for. If I did the buckle enough tight enough that they fit they were rubbing at my ankle, looser and there was still rubbing/cutting and now they were sort of hanging off me. A sad no to those.

The other pair, a big old flip flop, flatform, neon metallic green, glorious. They fit well, they would have not fit well on someone with a foot that was wider but they fit me. I wore them out to pick up some shopping. Reader, they were cutting the actual fuck out of the top of my foot where the wide band of the flip flop part rubbed my feet to blisters. For f-ing fs sake! So, I popped into H&M to see if they had some cheap not thick banded flip flops and they had some that were similar to mine but all rubber, sparkles and a tenth of the price of the ones that were cutting me to shreds. Tried them on. They were for a wider foot so no cutting. I bought them, some plasters from Superdrug and now I have sandals for the wedding. If anyone looks askance I shall get out my phone and show them Jennifer Lawrence on the red carpet at Cannes in a stunning Dior gown and FLIP FLOPS. They are the future.

I'm sending both pairs I bought back even though I wore the second pair out for a brief walk. I figure if shoes tear your feet to shreds you can return them.

And that, people, will hopefully be the last of me boring on about sandals I buy that don't fit or that try to scar me for life.

MouseMinge · 24/05/2023 22:16

I currently want to get up and get a drink but have two cats lying on my legs so I'll have to stay thirsty.

angelico53 · 25/05/2023 08:05

Made me chuckle this morning; easily amused, me, but: my son's tutor at college put a note on the course group chat last night, in advance of an assignment on reproduction, that "bell end" was not an anatomically correct term and should not be used.

That's hilarious.

lucicle · 25/05/2023 16:40

Hello, you lot. Long time no see!

Tricyrtis2022 · 25/05/2023 16:41

Blimey, lucicle! Haven't seen you about for donkey's years! We met in about 2003 at Kew Gardens, I was treehugger at the time.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 25/05/2023 16:48

Lucicle! How lovely to see you.

lucicle · 25/05/2023 17:01

Lovely to see you both too!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 25/05/2023 17:24

How's T? And the garden?

Oh @lucicle ! How nice!

lucicle · 25/05/2023 18:19

Hi @Kucinghitam and @Britinme!

The garden is looking quite nice if a bit weed-ridden. And T is doing her GCSEs (gulp)!

I saw a bit of what went on on the other board. Sorry you all had to leave but very nice to see you here.

I like the gate colour. And all proper gardens are a little bit weed ridden.

lucicle · 25/05/2023 20:31

We also have a picnic table up by the house which is that colour; I love it too. The weeds are probably nice for the bees etc, at least that's what I tell myself.
