Would this scare you or intimidate you?

It made (well past it now) me feel intimidated.

And the last time it happened and I didn't respond the next thing was a bottle (thankfully plastic) hitting my head.

Same here. Out jogging and had a wolf whistle and a comment about my breasts by a couple of young blokes in a van. I ignored so they threw a bottle at me that shattered at my feet cutting my legs.

So yeah I now feel quite scared at a wolf whistle. Although it hasn't happened since I became disabled funnily enough lol

ExtremelyDetermined · 19/04/2023 07:59

Yes to avoiding going back the same way later when I was younger, in case they thought I was encouraging their behaviour, back for more. Horrible.

VincentVaguer · 19/04/2023 08:00

I'd assume they were mentally unwell, as I am nearly 60 and not a catch.

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 19/04/2023 08:01

Harassed and irritated yes, only feel intimidated if it progresses to something else. Someone followed me in their car last year, calling me like a cat. Drove really slowly alongside me for a while. I’m a fifty year old woman and I was very unsettled and a year later still feel disturbed by it.

AuntieMarys · 19/04/2023 08:01

Not threatened but they would get a loud " Fuck off" in return

How embarrassing. Why did men whistling at you like a dog in the street give you a lift? Where were you emotionally that you thought that was lifting you?

You might disagree but this is a twatty response.

Yep. Well I think telling women that say they don’t like being harassed in the street that it’s a ‘load of tosh’ and implying they should enjoy it is a twatty response. Play stupid games and all that.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/04/2023 08:05

It’s a form of cat calling isn’t it? It’s very disconcerting and designed to embarrass and fluster a woman.

No I wouldn't at all, used to give me a lift back in the day. Illegal - what a load of tosh.
This is what you replied to. The person never said people should enjoy it or that not liking it is a load of tosh. They said it gave them a lift and that making it illegal is a load of tosh. You turned this into ‘stupid games’ by trying to make them feel like shit for having a different opinion from you.

I don’t agree with them (although the idea of making it illegal given the demands on the depleted criminal justice infrastructure seems a bit unrealistic) but there’s no need to be twatty about it.

Climbles · 19/04/2023 08:15

Not now.
When I was young I felt very uncomfortable when these things would happen (which was a lot). It made me feel powerless, objectified and often angry.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 19/04/2023 08:37

I work in construction, if anyone from site is caught wolf whistling or harassing women in any way then they are red carded and told to leave site.

Rightly so

Suggesting it is a ‘load of tosh’ for women to want it to be illegal for men to harass them is twatty. If someone is twatty then they might get a twatty response.

DRS1970 · 19/04/2023 08:47

Of course it would. It isn't acceptable behaviour at all.

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 19/04/2023 08:54

It’s really not. Not everyone agrees with you. That’s life. No one insulted or tried to undermine an individual, it was a concept they described as a load of tosh. If someone can’t engage with that on a sensible level they’re really not helping the conversation.

I love this, give a really clear message which won’t just be impacting on the time these men are at work but reinforces the fact that it’s not acceptable.

That is a considerably twattier response than the one you’re protesting.

Also, something is not required to insult the individual to be offensive or objectionable. If you genuinely can’t see why saying it’s ‘a load of tosh’ for women to want street harassment to be illegal falls under that category, then you’re in no position to champion sensible conversation.

Yes and it also means they can't work on any of our sites in the future which eventually means they will be let go.

It really is in my opinion. Not everyone agrees with you - that’s life! Coming on a thread where women are describing being harassed and how uncomfortable it makes them and dismissing it as ‘oh I like it, it gives me a lift, making it illegal is a load of tosh’ is twatty.

notacooldad · 19/04/2023 09:10

It's alright fir grown women saying that they get a 'lift' from being whistled at. However some if these blokes target young girls. They clearly know they are underage as I've seen them do it to the girls in school uniform. The girls I work with have said they feel very embarrassed when it happens.
Fortunately it doesn't seem to be happening as much now. It was constant in the 80s abd bloody annoying.

Skybluepinky · 19/04/2023 09:19

No.

mogtheexcellent · 19/04/2023 09:21

Yes. They should keep their thoughts to themselves.

greyhairnomore · 19/04/2023 09:26

No I wouldn't. I'd be amazed though

Nanatokidsdogshampsters · 19/04/2023 09:30

I'd look if they had a guide dog.

DangerNoodles · 19/04/2023 09:33

I've never recieved as many cat calls as I did when I was a teenager in school uniform. At the time I found it annoying but looking back it scares me that young women and girls may still be targeted by disgusting adult men.

I don't often get cat called any more thank God.

ItWasntMyFault · 19/04/2023 09:42

It was embarrassing when I was young - as a teenager in the 80s it happened a lot.
Now I'd be amazed and would laugh - in my mid 50s it's really not going to happen.
I never felt intimidated though.
