Fashion items I hate

I don’t understand why anyone likes them but it could be me/my age/body shape?

Viscose and ‘recycled polyester’. There is more and more of it around. It seems expensive, smells weird and feels horrible. Being a certain time of life it’s unbearable when having a hot moment.

Also, puff sleeves and/or shoulders. I look like a man in drag dressed as a milkmaid. Similar with anything described as boxy. Just makes me look super wide.

anyone else?

Cropped trousers. I am sure someone suggested them as a practical joke and is laughing at how they persuaded so many people to follow the idea like sheep (apologies to sheep if they are offended).

SharonEllis · 15/04/2023 14:02

I quite like puffed sleeves if they arent too extreme & fit well. Loathe synthetic fabrics except viscose which is plant based. Stresses me out that its so hard to find natural fibres & they are nearly always mixed with synthetics. HATE high rise jeans & Jeans that have stupid 'wear' on them.

twilighteaser · 15/04/2023 14:21

Hate animal print, non natural fibres ( but hate leather clothes too) lace, frills, tiers and puffs, waterfall cardigans, handkerchief hems, gold chains. Hate seeing labels & logos too.

Hate clothes & shoes in pastel colours, salmon, lemon, orange, jade, purple, pink, burgundy, turquoise and gold. Especially gold.

Love Japanese minimalist style in black grey & white

Anything that resembles an enormous, shapeless potato sack. Even worse if it's in lime green or cerise and made from some hideous material. Don't get me started on bright orange leopard print either 😱

I think designers are just taking the piss out of women now.

I think designers are just taking the piss out of women now.

I agree - I think the fashion industry is going through a massively misogynist moment - churning out piles of cheap, badly cut, badly designed, synthetic, unflattering fashion - regardless of price point. All women seem to be having a fashion crisis at the moment - blaming themselves and their bodies because every single item of clothing, no matter the brand, makes women uncomfortable and ugly looking. As a PP said, there seems to be no shortage of natural fibres for kids and men's clothes.

I was looking at my middle aged husband and his dad friends and they are so much better dressed than women these days - wool mix jumpers, warm coats, blazers, cotton t-shirts, proper denim jeans, quality shoes. All of these are reasonably easy to buy on various budgets. But women's clothes seem to be shoddy and disposable - whether you are spending £15 in Primark or £150 in Whistles - quality and durability is about the same. My husband actually said "well you women and your fast fashion, what do you expect?" - as if we are the ones responsible for it.

High necks, mom jeans, keyholes, cropped jumpers, recycled polyester, tiers, backless, flares and chunky soles. It's SHIT. They are actively ripping the piss out of us and we suck it up - though I guess going naked isn't an option. I don't see well-dressed women any more and I live in a fairly affluent part of London.

Lip fillers and huge eyebrows.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 15/04/2023 15:02

Cropped trousers, make your legs look short.

Three quarter sleeves: horrible and instantly aging/frumpy looking. Also impossible to wear comfortably under a jumper or jacket. Should be banned.

Craftycorvid · 15/04/2023 18:09

@MotherofPearl I have the odd thing from Poetry (via eBay) but they are so expensive new. I used to get rich pickings in charity shops but now it’s nothing but horrible scratchy man-made fibres. eBay is ok for the brands I like in good quality fabrics. Also I keep my clothes a long time regardless of whether that makes me look well past it or not!

GetYourActTogether1 · 15/04/2023 18:13

The wide legged trousers a lot of middle aged women are wearing.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/04/2023 18:16

Oh, yes, cropped trousers! They only look passable at best if you’re 5’ 10’ and a size 8. On anyone else, forget it.

Ditto to ‘Mom’ jeans, too. Horrible things.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 15/04/2023 18:16

I wear cropped trousers. My legs are very long and the crop beaks up the length a bit. Having read the thread, maybe everyone is laughing at me, but I think I look good in them, anyway!

notprincehamlet · 15/04/2023 19:35

Jeans that fasten just under the chin. Crappy fabrics that look and feel like something designed to stop spacecraft from burning up on re-entry. Right now it seems as though fashion has left the building.

beguilingeyes · 15/04/2023 20:28

Pussycat bows on blouses. Makes me think of Thatcher shudders.

Squidlette · 16/04/2023 16:02

I like cropped trousers, but only if they're quite tight and 50s beatnik vibe. I have ankles and it's a shame to hide them under trousers. But Cropped wide leg trousers, no ta.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/04/2023 04:34

@FKATondelayo I agree about men's clothes. I've not bought a t-shirt in years, because they all seem to be tissue thin, so in lighter colours they are see through. My chap has lots of t-shirts in dense, opaque cotton, so it's possible to make decent ones. Just not for women, apparently. I'm a small size so can't wear men's clothes.

Jade, purple and burgundy aren't pastel colours?

keffie12 · 17/04/2023 05:19

This is why I shop online and have my own style, which is a Boho punk quirky look. Basically, I dress how I want, and buying online gives me a million more choices than the majority of average high street shops.

I wouldn't be seen dead in shops like M & S and Bon Marche, which are the main two I won't use. Néw look, NEXT and the like are too mainstream for me.

If you know something you specifically want, Google it. Someone somewhere will stock it.

The only high street clothes shop I use is one of the two shops of Joe Browns at outlets as they are prodomently online.

Iheartlibrarians · 17/04/2023 10:35

Agree with so much of this (tiers, polyester, cold-shoulder tops and waterfall cardigans in particular).

But my GOD: I'll fight to the death for my high-waist jeans. Being, er, blessed in the arse department, I'd never have worn these at 20 when we were all supposed to be rake-thin. But now I find myself miraculously possessed of a fashionable body shape, I'm keen to show it off!

I live in terror that they'll bring back ultra-low rise, maybe with the classic 90s whale-tail thong at the back...😬😬😬

StarlightLady · 17/04/2023 10:52
  • Dungarees
  • Anything with multiple straps
  • Baggy jeans
  • Trousers that almost come up to my bra; they cut you in half.
  • Swimsuits with a high back; what happened to the traditional scoop back?
  • Flared sleeves; so impractical
  • Beige underwear; it makes me look as if I'm made of cardboard
  • Huge brandnames across your boobs.
Twinsmummy1812 · 17/04/2023 13:08

That’s for all your replies, I’m glad it’s not just me! I don’t want to wear fabrics that are going to melt and fuse to me and why does viscose/‘recycled’ polyester always smell like heating has just been switched on and all the radiators are dusty? Foul

i look ridiculous in wide cropped trousers, I’m 5ft 7 and they make me look dumpy. I love an ankle grazer cigarette trouser and I love 3/4 length sleeve 🤭. Half length are so uncomfortable, I’m weirdly hot in full length and short sleeved are a minefield of cap, puff, Angel and long sleeve seem to be peasant, bell voluminous things that make me look like a sumo wrestler!
