Fashion items I hate

I don’t understand why anyone likes them but it could be me/my age/body shape?

Viscose and ‘recycled polyester’. There is more and more of it around. It seems expensive, smells weird and feels horrible. Being a certain time of life it’s unbearable when having a hot moment.

Also, puff sleeves and/or shoulders. I look like a man in drag dressed as a milkmaid. Similar with anything described as boxy. Just makes me look super wide.

anyone else?

Ive said this before and I'll say it again- adults wearing dungarees, makes them look like a cross between a teletubbie and a giant toddler, hideous and will be banned when I am Queen

You actually made me choke with your teletubby comment 😂😂

pictoosh · 14/04/2023 16:05

Oh tiers, hate them. You're looking at a nice dress, nice fabric and then oh no, there's a couple of extra layers of frill tacked on to the bottom to fuck it up.

pictoosh · 14/04/2023 16:08

Also yes polyester and viscose...it does smell weird and how sweaty?

Puffed sleeves, epaulettes, tiers, flappy bits-anything that makes the wearer look like a parcel which is coming undone.

GBoucher · 14/04/2023 16:17

High-rise jeans. Makes your arse look a mile long. I've heard some women wear them to disguise their tum. They don't. If anything they accentuate.

curtaintwitcher23 · 14/04/2023 16:20

Backless dresses

You find a beautiful dress only to turn it around and see its backless so you can't wear a bra , totally unwearable and makes a quite ordinary day dress into something else you could never wear for work etc.

See also so many things totally see through (not intentionally) , not just cheap stuff either.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/04/2023 16:21

Can anyone in the rag trade tell us— is there a shortage of cotton worldwide?

It seems to be freely available for the manufacture of men's clothes and children's clothes. I don't see them being expected to wear viscose instead.

Cherrysoup · 14/04/2023 15:59

Because it’s my opinion.

You did say ''I think'' so I apologise.

I do think they can look really good on a certain body type - with heels - not so much flats.

I hardly wear heels though so sticking to other styles at the moment.

Timeturnerplease · 14/04/2023 16:29

Everything at the moment. I am a fat 5’1’’ with muscular legs from a childhood of horse riding. Everything that looks nice on me is wildly impractical for being a primary teacher and mother of two under 5.

The worst ‘trend’ though has to be everything designed for us fatties having to be floral. I bloody hate floral clothes. Makes me look like a granny.

tralaahlah · 14/04/2023 16:30

I also hate all this ribbed really tight material that you can buy in leggings, leotards, shorts, belly tops 🤮 you can also purchase in a range of colours to include neon pink, orange and yellow!

Precipice · 14/04/2023 16:48

One of the recent past threads on clothing gripes and poor quality did suggest there has been a cotton shortage in recent years, but as you say, it's clearly not the actual reason for why so much clothing intended for women has switched to synthetic fibres.

I'm willing to both believe and accept that viscose is a much better fabric than polyester - but it still doesn't make me willing to buy viscose, generally speaking. I don't mind those Heattech long-sleeve things from Uniqlo, which are synthetic, but I'm only ever wearing them as a layer over a short-sleeve top, not directly on the body. When I've tried on viscose tops in store, they weren't for me. I can't wear most polyester tops, I really hate the feeling of it on the skin after a short time. Definitely agree about the 'recycled polyester'. It's not a selling point that it's not cotton! It's a bad thing!

Cap sleeves and too short tops. I find that even a lot of tops that aren't specifically cropped are too short on me (as in, seem fine if standing straight but you want to allow for movement and it riding up), but the cropped style I actively think is stupid. Too many tops are too narrow on the shoulders and across the back for me too, but that's not a style.

Weird cut-away holes. The apparent inability to grasp that not everyone wants to show off skin. For summer, I find that most sleeveless tops that have a higher neckline (I don't mean turtleneck, just up around the collarbones) compensate for having to use a little more fabric there by cutting away the fabric in the back.

Polo pique fabric. I do like some polo tops, but only jersey polos. Often if you're looking online, it's not clear which it is.

Precipice · 14/04/2023 16:52

Oh, and in terms of cuts - whatever it's called when it widens out from around the bust to the hips. It looks odd and fattening on me.

beguilingeyes · 15/04/2023 00:30

Jumpers with 3/4 length sleeves..I don't want cold wrists thank you very much, and it makes putting on a jacket difficult.
I remember either Trinny or Susanna aeons ago saying that if you wear baggy clothes you look baggy, which is something that has stayed with me.

whatsyourpoison12 · 15/04/2023 00:37

doc martins
mum jeans
cardigans
midi dresses
denim jackets
wearing trainers with dresses
cheap blazers

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/04/2023 00:42

Prairie dresses, especially in floral prints.

MaJolie · 15/04/2023 00:44

Florals, batwing sleeves, cropped anything, high necks, backless dresses, animal prints, skater dresses, puff sleeves, those blazers with ruched sleeves so they look ‘casually pushed up’, white trainers, sliders, those fugly black ‘leather’ sandals, puffa coats, and gym leggings designed to enhance your buttocks.

ComputerWifeKaren · 15/04/2023 00:53

North face anything. Tracksuits. Oh and balaclavas, which are are the rage around here Hmm

echt · 15/04/2023 02:57

Obviously I'm not being coerced to buy these things: buttscrunching leggings. Can they not see that the radiating folds make it look like you're wearing an enormous arsehole on the outside of the leggings?

GarlicGrace · 15/04/2023 03:21

I like viscose, jersey and lycra. A large portion of my wardrobe could be describes as potato sacks 😂

I really don't like clothing with extra holes in it, "the apparent inability to grasp that not everyone wants to show off skin", as @Precipice said. I've never liked carrot-leg jeans & trousers on either sex; can't wait for them to die!

Echo the general dislike of Frumpcore, it's not even wittily ironic. I'm increasingly annoyed by the tendency to show all fashion, frumpy or not, on miserable-looking, emaciated models with lank hair, slumping across the screen as if they resent being there.

I can't wear puffs & frills either, but I'm pleased to see them because I think we're moving away from skimpy clothing. Sleeves are the least challenging area to add volume; I think we'll now be seeing more swishy shapes and interesting construction overall. We're overdue for a change.

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/04/2023 05:14

Polyester, recycled or otherwise, is still awful, sweaty stuff!
Defo cold shoulder tops.
This one-shoulder trend - just don’t get it.
Pleated skirts, and peplum tops - just sooo unflattering.

Baycitystroller · 15/04/2023 05:27

Incredibly tight leggings in beige usually worn as every day wear paired with very tight tops. They show everything. Though I expect that’s the point.

’Coords’ - tops and bottoms in the same colour.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 15/04/2023 05:31

For personal fussiness reasons - tiers, puffs and frills, polyester, three quarter length sleeves, buttons used as decoration, raincoats with all those bloody buttons on and super high waisted trousers.

I like viscose, though 🙂

BatshitCrazyWoman · 15/04/2023 05:41

Oh, I have more - high necks on tops and dresses. Some v necks would be great. Florals. I don't like them and it's so hard to find a dress that meets all my requirements that isn't floral. That lurid bright green that seems to be everywhere. I don't like that at all

Mercurial123 · 15/04/2023 06:00

Jeggings, leggings, floral dresses with trainers, skinny jeans Chanel handbags.

PiedPipa · 15/04/2023 06:36

Basically anything in the shops atm:
Puff sleeves
Boxy, saggy cuts
Tops that go straight down past the boobs, making your waist look the same width
Wide leg trousers
Tiers
That vile, 'bile' shade of lime green
Clunky shoes with inflexible soles

I'm 5ft3 and petite hourglass with size 2 feet (look like trotters in heels).
I need clothes I can wear, not that wear me- smooth, unfussy, tailored and streamlined.

So tottally agree with @VWHoliday, skinny jeans absolutely suit some women. Just because one might not like them personally, doesn't mean they 'don't suit anyone' 🙄. They flatter my actual body shape, instead of drowning it like wide legs, or deforming it like mom jeans.
