Fashion items I hate

I don’t understand why anyone likes them but it could be me/my age/body shape?

Viscose and ‘recycled polyester’. There is more and more of it around. It seems expensive, smells weird and feels horrible. Being a certain time of life it’s unbearable when having a hot moment.

Also, puff sleeves and/or shoulders. I look like a man in drag dressed as a milkmaid. Similar with anything described as boxy. Just makes me look super wide.

anyone else?

Tiers
Cold shouldered
Puffy things
Skinny jeans, I think they don’t flatter anyone.

WizardinTraining · 14/04/2023 14:12

T-shirts with rolled edge sleeves instead of a proper hem. They never hang right after being washed and require really careful ironing to look even close to decent.

Second this.

Third it

I've never liked what I call 'frumpy fashion' when items look like something you'd turn down in a charity shop because it looks like something for a little old lady, with horrible buttons or an unflattering shape. I blame Miucca Prada!

manontroppo · 14/04/2023 14:15

@Isanyoneup John Lewis, M&S and Next all had sweetheart necklines in this week. I have no boobs though!

I was thinking this earlier today weirdly enough. It's like a competition to see how ugly you can look. I want to go back to the fashion days where you put effort in, bought a few good pieces of clothes and really did everything you could to look your best. Can we go back to that please?

That sounds good! (Not the lack of boobs, the amount of choice)

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/04/2023 14:24

Same here re Viscose, so many clothes are made that it's difficult to find cotton
I don't like jersey either, tops never hang correctly and they end up saggy and shapeless
I like " crisp" cotton tops as they're cooler and look better
It's one of the reasons I buy on Vinted as I find suitable tops there
I've been happy with almost every order
I do however live in skinny jeans!

UseOfWeapons · 14/04/2023 14:24

Capped sleeves. They’re too short, have a proper short sleeve, or be sleeveless, these pathetic excuses for sleeves should be banned. Likewise cold shoulder garments, anything puffy or elasticated, any fabric that feels horrible on the skin. Knickers that have scalloped edges, why can’t we have flat seams, and undies that support sagging, aging arses that aren’t so bloody uncomfortable? Very little looks good on me, weary minute boobs, very lean and muscular, tall and broad shouldered. No wonder I hate shopping, and look like Orphan Annie.

ZittiEBuoni · 14/04/2023 13:00

I'm with @xogossipgirlxo, I made a resolution this year never to buy another jersey garment. Unless very cleverly cut and structured it hangs awfully and washes badly.

No man made fibres in summer, NONE, I don't care how eco-friendly. Cotton/linen only. The menopause commands it.

I agree. All these cheap shops like Shein, Pretty little thing sell awful lot of polyester. I can't be arsed spending money on it, let alone wearing it. Cotton might not look too glamorous as it's prone to creases (I think it depends on quality too?), but at least I'm not drowning in my own sweat.
Also, I am slowly ditching bodycon clothes. Who cares, I'm not on catwalk to show off, and my husband can appreciate my naked arse at home.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/04/2023 15:01

You can't lump viscose on with Polyester (recycled or otherwise). It's made of wood pulp and it is breathable. Often more so than cotton or linen and drapes beautifully, Some manufacturing techniques use problematic amounts of water. Look for Ecovero viscose.

I don't need to look for it because it is everywhere and it looks cheap, doesn't wear well and holds smells. And I am supposed to pay more for "Lenzing" than cotton? I wouldn't buy it if it cost a quarter the price.

emmathedilemma · 14/04/2023 15:05

cropped jumpers (if it's cold enough to need a jumper I don't want a draft round my middle)
tops with no shoulders
frills
ties / bows at the neck
puffy sleeves
floaty sleeves
swimsuits are never long enough in the body, I'm 5ft 6, this shouldn't be so difficult
bras
anything made of wool

I'd quite happily live in leggings / trackies and hoodies if i could.

comeondover · 14/04/2023 15:08

Tiers - I find them so mimsy and twee.
Trousers cut too short - they've been around a few years now. Annoying because socks look silly with them so they mean draughty ankles.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/04/2023 15:17

I don’t mind viscose - it’s made from plant fibres, isn’t it?
Polyester is a different matter.

I hate anything orange - to me orange only looks good on oranges.

3WildOnes · 14/04/2023 15:22

I really like dresses made from viscose. It doesn't make me sweat and I find it hangs nicely. I can't wear polyester.
If I am buying g a dress I will always look for silk or viscose.

refreshingseahorse · 14/04/2023 15:22

Yes to viscose, especially viscose cotton blends. Viscose ≠ polyester they are not the same thing. Viscose will breath and is good for loose summer tops.

No to the recycled polyester, especially when used for sleepwear, why would anyone do that to themselves? Also no to the giant collars with frills on them, leatherette trousers, and cold shoulders.

I don't wear skinny jeans anymore but they do suit some women. I don't understand how you can say they don't.

Oakbeam · 14/04/2023 15:32

It’s highly processed wood pulp. The production process uses large amounts of water and some nasty chemicals. Despite its origins, it can’t really be regarded as environmentally friendly.

beguilingeyes · 14/04/2023 15:38

Jumpsuits with the zip up the back. Impossible to do up without help and then how are you meant to go to the loo?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 14/04/2023 15:46

‘Vegan’ leather. How can leather be vegan? It’s just plastic, isn’t it?

Maple2023 · 14/04/2023 15:56

Anything I can't get a bra under
Tall hourglass with ridiculous boobs, strapless and backless don't exist in my size
Or where it covers your bra and then gapes at the armpits
Anything oversized. I just look like I've chucked a super king size sheet over myself

DrNo007 · 14/04/2023 15:57

Like some PPs I am baffled by the disappearance of cotton as a summer fabric. I am in Cyprus at the moment and even here, where it can get very hot, there is hardly any cotton clothing in the shops — it is all polyester and viscose. I don’t object to viscose as much as polyester but for hot weather viscose is nowhere near as cool and breathable as cotton, and polyester is just intolerable. Can anyone in the rag trade tell us— is there a shortage of cotton worldwide?

Because it’s my opinion.

Oh and also crocs or sandals with socks

That used to be the height of uncool middle aged man on holiday look now everyone under 30 is wearing it and it looks ridiculous!

Oh my word I completely agree!!!! What the heck is with this sliders and socks thing happening?!

As a big busted individual the current high neck lines are doing my head in in. Looks ridiculous with my boobs.

I do like that denim jackets seem to be hanging around, likewise the white trainers (because to be frank my size 9 feet have always been in smart white trainers with everything’s so it makes me feel like I started a trend 😊)

Also join the crew hating cold shoulder / one shoulder because of the bra situation. I need to wear one, simple.

There’s a colleague I have with a fabulous figure who sometimes wears massive shapeless tent like things. Other days she wears form fitting clothes so I don’t think it’s a question of her wanting to hide anything, I think it’s just her sense of fashion/what she’s comfortable in. It reminds me of the prairie dress pisstake from a few years ago.
