Fashion items I hate

I don’t understand why anyone likes them but it could be me/my age/body shape?

Viscose and ‘recycled polyester’. There is more and more of it around. It seems expensive, smells weird and feels horrible. Being a certain time of life it’s unbearable when having a hot moment.

Also, puff sleeves and/or shoulders. I look like a man in drag dressed as a milkmaid. Similar with anything described as boxy. Just makes me look super wide.

anyone else?

I don't like cropped wide leg trousers. I think it looks like you just bought a pair of trousers that weren't your size. I've never seen anyone I thought looked good in them.

Absolutely agree. Awful.

Having read throu most posts the fashion market is not aimed at a certain age 😀fashion is for young people always has been always will be !
when u get past fashion age we us most people should by now know how to dress there figures in what suits them and there are shops that cater for us !
young people look cool in anything if u don’t think so then u need to look back when u was that age and remember what we was wearing !
some people are more creative with clothes than others x

Leather leggings. Unless you are off on a quest around middle earth (which I totally respect) I think they look totally mad.

But that's the thing- there aren't shops that cater! They all jump on the bandwagon, or do a middle aged version of fashion which doesn't actually suit anyone.

I basically need my own personal tailor.

I’m interested in the shops you think cater for women who know what suits them? and why you think these shops don’t reflect fashion?

I certainly don’t agree young people can look good in anything — they are just as likely to have specific body types as older women, or for there to be fashion trends that look godawful on those body or complexion types.

Londontown12 · 15/04/2023 09:20

@Squidlette @MaJolie
Arket cos beyoyndnine free people hush and many more there are so many independent stores that has key pieces ! Follow people on instagram who’s style u like and they tag shops where they buy there pieces from that’s how I buy my clothes now I don’t find much in high street shops anymore x

Baycitystroller · 15/04/2023 09:23

I heartily disagree!

What on earth is 'fashion age'? Do we have to throw out all our clothes on a certain birthday and start shopping in special past it shops? Young people most certainly do not look good in everything, I look back at photos of me and think 'what the fuck was I thinking', but that's quite fun really.

Fashion is for anyone who wants it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/04/2023 09:30

Yes to tiers, how often am I thinking "Oh that's nice" then pick it up .....tiers . I'd look like Nelly Olsen from Little House on the Prairie

Wedge sandles/platforms . Not only would I break a bone , they look sillly with thin ankles

EndofDaze · 15/04/2023 09:33

Frills, tiers, puffs. Pretty much everything in the shops currently. Short, round and fifty -plus. Really struggling with fashion at the moment.

I sort of get it. 17 year old me, with massive boobs and no hips, looked a lot better in 90s grunge slip dress and scraggy shirts than mid 40s me, with droopy boobs and haggard face would. Youth allows you to carry off a lot more.

Yes, but another 17 year old might have had a BMI of 40.

Most of it! I find myself especially horrified by the man-made fibres everywhere. I’ll see something that is quite attractive but feels horrible. I have the ick about certain textures - just the feel of polyester silk makes me suck my teeth. Natural fibres don’t seem to feature anywhere, which is awful for the environment (as is fast fashion). The current look round our way is jumpers and cardis that look like the wearer raided their grandma’s closet worn with jeans and challengingly bright trainers. Ok, I guess, but for the polyester and acrylic….

LadyOfTheCanyon · 15/04/2023 09:55

For people looking for Linen, Brandalley have a whole sale going at the moment of linen clothes with some really nice stuff in.

Have you tried Poetry? Quite expensive but their emphasis is on natural fibres. They have some lovely linen.

What I'm after is clothes that are flattering for my body type, fashion isn't enough for me these days.

I'm after wide leg trousers and a wrap V-neck, three-quarter length sleeved top in a variety of colours and I'll be laughing. Also vest tops. And some T shirts.

Someone out there wasn't loving high waisted trousers. My low rise hipster jeans days are long gone. What looked fab 20 years ago isn't so forgiving on 40 year old me!

furryfrontbottom · 15/04/2023 10:06

Leggings worn without a top that covers the bottom, unless in the gym.

@DinosApple, if you find sources for good wide-legged trousers and the exact top you mention, do say — that’s exactly my vibe, and old garments are literally wearing out from age, plus I left my favourite Quinn and Donnelly trousers in a hotel in Italy last year, and despite repeated enquiries, they claim they didn’t find them.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/04/2023 10:19

"recycled polyester" annoys me! It may be recycled, but it's still sweaty polyester!

Also, scarcity of natural fibres and simple timeless styles. I do like Community Clothing though.

And shoe sizes. I am, by far, not the only woman I know with size 9 feet - 43 - not rebranded 42. There are fewer and fewer places that do this size. It was never that common to start with.

And cold shoulder tops. Just why?

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/04/2023 10:20

Things with rips in them.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 15/04/2023 12:28

@DinosApple I think it was me who said no high waisted trousers. They don't suit me (big boobs), and the waistband is around my ribs which is really uncomfortable. It's purely a me thing 😁

Isanyoneup · 15/04/2023 13:44

Another one. Those sleeveless calf length puffer jacket coats that look good on precisely nobody

2ndMrsdeWinter · 15/04/2023 13:48

Bright colours. I’d rather not look like a canary thanks.

AffIt · 15/04/2023 13:51

The lack of boat necklines in fashion ATM.

I have a slightly odd build - I'm tall and broad-shouldered, but all my height is in my legs and I have quite a short torso.

Anything with a polo neck or a neckline below my collar bones makes me look like an oompa loompa in a magic mirror hall, as it throws all my proportions off.

Boatline necks are perfect (ideally sleeveles), but there's sadly few about these days.

AffIt · 15/04/2023 13:54

Sleeveles? Sleeveless, obvs.
