A light meal, lunch usually for me. However whack a couple of fried eggs on top and cheese and it’s a good evening meal.

JellyfishandShells · 14/04/2023 10:21

A meal. Toast on its own is a snack.

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 14/04/2023 10:21

I would class it as a meal… a snack here is fruit, cheese on crackers or a couple of biscuits etc

LetItGoToRuin · 14/04/2023 10:23

It depends how much of it you eat, IMO. A single piece of toast with a spoonful of beans is a snack. Two toasted doorsteps with a whole can of beans is a meal. Beans on toast could be the main meal of the day, depending on what else is going on that day.

I'm not one of these that subscribes to any rule about having to have a light meal (usually cold) and a main meal (usually hot) each day. As long as I've eaten about the right amount of food for my needs, and covered main food groups across the day, that'll do.

TheKobayashiMaru · 14/04/2023 10:23

To me a snack is small, such as a packet of crisps or an apple. Beans on toast is more substantial so would be a lunch or a desperation dinner.

sanityisamyth · 14/04/2023 10:24

Death. Very allergic to tomato!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 14/04/2023 10:25

Wow - I see I'm in the minority in having it as a satisfying main meal when I'm feeling lazy 😄

LittleFreakJezebel · 14/04/2023 10:25

Yep can definitely pass as tea if you add some eggs! Poached, fried and scrambled all acceptable.

BigFatFailure1 · 14/04/2023 10:28

Meal!

EyesOnThePies · 14/04/2023 10:28

TAAT.

Who cares?

If a ‘meal’ it’s ok to eat more than 3 a day.

If a ‘snack’ it’s ok to eat protein plus grains (BoT on wholemeal provides the fu range of amino acids needed for protein intake) instead of a donut and milkshake.

If it’s two big slices of toast, while Tin of beans and grated cheese on top most people would say ‘light meal’ or ‘meal’. But someone with high calorie use might say ‘snack’. If one slice of toast and a third of a can of beans, why can’t it be a snack?

Eranzer · 14/04/2023 10:29

Both. It's a snack if it'll be a few hours til my main meal, it's my main meal if I stick an egg on it for tea 🤷🏻‍♀️

BarbaraofSeville · 14/04/2023 10:30

It's a meal, for any time of day, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Whenever it seems appropriate, depending on what you have in and would like to eat.

But I don't have any weirdness about types or amount of food served at lunch vs dinner or designating any particular meals as the 'main meal'. It's all pretty much the same, in fact it often is the same, because most of the time, my lunch is leftover dinner.

Cincinnatus · 14/04/2023 10:31

A meal for us.

Talia99 · 14/04/2023 10:31

Definitely a meal. I have it as my main meal of the day quite often if I can’t be bothered to cook.

LuisaMei · 14/04/2023 10:32

A meal for sure.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 14/04/2023 10:32

We had beans on toast every Thursday for tea (main meal of the day) when I was a kid. Three slices of toast and a massive portion of beans by the time I was a teenager. When I was in my teens mum, at my request, used to branch out and get me tinned spaghetti or ravioli instead some weeks! It’s fine as a full main meal but nowadays I tend to have it for lunch or for dinner if I’ve had a large lunch, so as a lighter meal. But then I’m better off than my parents were and mum’s housekeeping money was running low by Thursday.

diddl · 14/04/2023 10:32

Often have it as my main meal when can't be bothered to cook.

Badbudgeter · 14/04/2023 10:32

I’d have it as a meal. Two slices thick toast. Half a tin of beans and cheese. It’s possibly the cheese that makes it feel more of a meal.

GiltEdges · 14/04/2023 10:32

Findyourneutralspace · 14/04/2023 10:02

A meal, but not a main meal. Usually lunch.

Lunch is a main meal? Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2023 10:33

A light meal. Way too much to be a 'snack' unless you've been doing serious physical activity (or are a growing teenager I suppose).

Arapawa · 14/04/2023 10:34

I love beans on toast. Chop onions, garlic, add cashew nuts, chilli. Mmmm.

evtheria · 14/04/2023 10:38

Depends on serving and stuff:

  • 1 piece of thin, basic sliced bread with 1/3 reg tin of beans... a snack to tide you over until dinner
  • 2 slices of decent bread, generously covered in beans and maybe grated cheese, resembling what you'd expect in a cafe... light meal
drumandthebass · 14/04/2023 10:42

I read that thread yesterday. I definitely say it's a meal.

SlimPig · 14/04/2023 10:42

Comefromaway · 14/04/2023 10:20

Oh yes, the addition of an egg makes it even better.

No, no, no, beans must never tough egg under any circumstances.
