If Labour win the next GE, what will they do better?

To be fair, I think any party could do better than the current shit show government we have now.

But I keep hearing people say, "Don't vote Tory," ok, I get why, but that leaves the assumption they mean vote Labour instead. I've never been a Labour voter (and I didn't vote Tory last time because I couldn't stand BJ), so what is it they will do better if they win next time?

I don't mean what they did/didn't do last time or further back in the past, I mean, what will they do better this time, that's a realistic possibility? (I mean, anyone can say they'll pump billions into the NHS, but how would that actually realistically be able to happen, for example?)

@noblegiraffe

Liz Truss isn't a lone idiot in an otherwise decent party. Line of the week, thank you :)

JustFrustrated · 13/04/2023 14:13

The idea of labour increasing taxes further on "higher earners" is quite concerning to many. Including those that aren't "higher earners" in the true sense of it.

That being said, I was all for voting labour this time round, despite their tax pledges, views on women etc until this latest smear campaign.

Sick to the back teeth of negative politics.

I'll vote for whichever party can run a clean campaign without resorting to absolutely vile claims about the other party. Claiming someone supports child abusers...that is disgusting.

beguilingeyes · 13/04/2023 14:16

Just one example..and I admit this is an easy one. Yvette Cooper would be a much, much better Home Secretary than unqualified, appalling Suella Braverman, who got sacked for breaching the Ministerial Code and was back in the job a week later, and whose MO seems to be spouting nasty dog-whistle soundbites as opposed to doing her job.

I agree some aren't higher earners in the true scheme of things, especially if they live in London.

I'd hope they keep the free childcare policy set to commence in 24/25. It doesn't affect me directly because my dc are past that stage, but it would be good for many working parents.

I think it's absurd these people don't actually need any qualifications in the position they hold.

blackpearwhitelilies · 13/04/2023 14:21

Yvette Cooper is excellent, as is Peter Kyle. Labour does have some really good MPs, it's true.

I think that they would tackle the energy companies and try to reduce our costs. I think they would tax higher earners more and try to funnel more into education that way [and I'm afraid I'm in favour of them taking away private schools' charitable status, though I'm aware that's not popular on MNet.] I think that they would tackle the water companies and address our filthy waterways. I am hopeful that they would look for better relations and communications with Europe, though wish they would be more assertive about this. As for what they wouldn't do - I don't think that they would keep channelling billions of public money to their friends and donors. That alone would really help the public finances. It's not a ringing endorsement but it's a hell of a lot better than what we've had for the last 13 long and leaden years.

In what way and how would they tackle the energy companies, they are global and energy is bought on the open market,

Blossomtoes · 13/04/2023 14:25

I remember what they achieved last time. Some more of that would do nicely.

They would probably spend more on health and education (yes this will likely mean higher taxes but I'd take that so my SEN DD can get a fraction of the support she needs). Hopefully they would spend a lot less giving backhanders to their mates.

MargotBamborough · 13/04/2023 14:35

If Labour win the next election they will do things like introduce self ID, which can be paid for with women's rights, safety and dignity rather than actual money, which are easy to implement, and which will allow them to claim they have effected major social change even though the change will be at best neutral and at worst harmful for 99% of the population.

They'll do these things in priority to fixing the NHS or making your mortgage and bills cheaper, because they have no idea how to do those things.

Self ID? What do you mean by that? As in ID cards or self identification gender wise? Sorry if i sound thick!

Last time they had people like Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Margaret Beckett.

I don't think today's shadow cabinet are quite the same calibre.

Starmer, Reeves and Streeting are just as good as anyone in the 1997 cabinet. And way better than anyone in the 2023 one.

The latter.

ID cards would actually have been a good idea IMO.

No, they all could have been good but are under the thumb of the batshit ideologues driving Labour party policy.

Oh, yeah, I agree. Women's rights and dignity already get a good kicking, let alone adding more!

I've just been reading Labour's website. Lots of "we would do this" and "we would do that." But it doesn't say how? Also, there is lots of slagging off the Tories, but again, slagging off the opposite party doesn't actually tell the voter what you would do better, it just tells the voter what you think the other did wrong in the past. So after all that I'm still none the wiser of they actually stand for 🤷🏼‍♀️

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 13/04/2023 14:57

I think they'll do childcare and education better. They will fund those better.

The will have honesty and integrity. They'll stick to the rules they set and won't make promises they can't keep.

They'll improve the justice system because this is an area Starmer understands and is passionate about.

I think they'll do better deals with Europe that benefit us financially.

Somethings I don't think they'll improve but I also think much of that will be the fact they are left with a shit show to improve and the media will tear them to shreds for anything they do whereas the Tory's would get away with worse.

However I'm not making my mind up who to vote for until manifestos are out.

I won't be voting a Tory though. For many reasons and also because my Mp is flipping Braverman Angry

Because if they announce policies, there’s the risk that the Tories will just steal it, like their childcare policy.

You’ll have to wait for the manifesto for a clear idea.

Labour drawing up plans to give parents more free childcare in '£6bn' pledge

The Mirror understands the party is talking about making childcare a key offer in the next election, with more free nursery hours for parents of two, three and four-year-olds under discussion

To be fair I don't think any politicians do things with 100% honesty and integrity in the end..

Good grief, it’s actually scary that some people still don’t know what labour are proposing in regards to self ID, or even what it actually means…
